problems w/free Audacity program

Guys...I recently downloaded the free Audacity audio recording program...and have had nothing but problems with it.

I even called our resident computer expert at work, and he was stumped.

Problems:

1. When I try to save anything I've recorded...the program puts a voice stamp on it (I forget what Audacity calls it). So, everytime I play it back, the female voice says a few words over the top of the audio file...and repeats every few minutes.

2. After a while...God knows why...when I close out of using Audacity, and go to my iTunes player (where I have over 2,000 songs loaded)...I get no sound/audio when playing any of those tunes. I've checked to see if the volumn has been inadvertedly turned down...and no problem there. Only thing that seems to work is re-boot the computer, then the sound/audio comes back.

Any free audio recording programs out there that doesn't take a doctorate in Computer Science to learn to operate? This is for my hobby, not for business. I've had a computer for 16 or 17 years...have never had these type of problems above.

I'd like to be able to swap airchecks with you guys again, but I must learn to use my PC or laptop. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Audacity has the benefit of being freeware but it can indeed be a pain in the neck sometimes. Have you ever checked out a free program called Freecorder, which has been recently renamed Ask And Record Toolbar. You can get it at http://appian.com/sound-recorder and it's fairly easy to use. An alternative for editing recordings is called Wavosaur, which I use also. Also easy to use, but not as professional a product as Audacity.

I loaded Audacity maybe a year ago and did not have problems like you are describing. Apparently there are multiple servers you can download from and maybe you got a cobbled version.

I have Adobe Audition which I use constantly so I don't spend enough time in Audacity to be a great mentor. I hang-out on another discussion site for church sound people and a lot of them use Audacity primarily because it is free. I got audacity so I could do some entry level mentoring with some of the beginners. So when one of them lets it be known they have a problem, I blow the dust of Audacity and work with it long enough to spot what they need to know and then I put it back to bed. I guess each time I use it I gain a little more respect for the program but some of features that I use every week in Audition I haven't located yet in Audacity.

I have Audacity, Audition, Cool Edit 2000 and iTunes on my machine. For ripping I have Grabber and for burning CDs I have Nero.... the skinny version that came preinstalled on the computer. I seldom have a problems of one of these programs scrambling up the mixer settings.

Thus, my suggestion that you blow away your present install and download again, hopefully from another source. You should not be having these compatibility problems. I did download an editor program and a a couple of others from NCH that people like because they are free.... but I found them to not be good neighbors on MY machine with all the other programs so I set them out on the curb for the trash pickup.
