Processing help (again)

Hey y’all, a while ago I posted something about about adjusting the bass for Omnia.9 ptn for my Hip Hop station. Since then I found a sound that fits the station and I pretty much stuck with a few tweaks here and there. I also upgraded to Omnia E9s and recreated my preset. and it sounds even better!

But now I’m going through the same processing crisis with my Blues/Soul/Old School station. I don’t want to use the same preset as my other station, and I’m trying to find a preset that’s more open and dynamic but not as loud and bassy as my other station, but I also don’t want anything that’s too transparent and quiet. I already have a good bit of knowledge of the processor but I still would like some of y’all’s help. Any tips, tricks, advice, etc will be greatly appreciated.
 
IMHO, if you are playing that good old stuff, you need to squeeze it a bit. You want a little pump and a lot of thump. James Brown, 60's Motown, some Stax, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and KoKo Taylor come to mind as test material.
It's always fun to set up processing!

Thanks for the advice! Although I very seldom play the OLD old school that you described (except on my Sunday Classics show), I tried the “pump and thump” you talked about and it translates well with my slightly more modern mix of music (ex. TK Soul, King George, Cupid, Johnnie Taylor, Bobby Blue Bland, Ms. Jody, etc etc). I backed off the AGC’s ratio and put WB2 in “Pre-Multiband” mode for that pump. For the thump, I did some EQ tweaks (especially to the low end) and messed with B1+B2 and the bass clipper settings. I also turned off all phase effects and switched to Low Latency mode. But let me not put too much of my strictly guarded airchain secrets out there because my competition may be watching😂

I want to add something here! I totally agree with the pump and thump idea! Another test song you can try is "Can I Get A...." by Jay-Z. When I heard another radio station play this, it sounded terrible because on every "click" beat, it caused downwards release by the AGC. The melody would just pump then release, pump then release consistently in the song. Some stations get it right! Yours could be one of them! Let the transients breathe a little! It seems like you could be doing it right since you backed off the AGC's ratio.

Most hip-hop is pretty forgiving when it comes to processing, since most hip-hop is ultra-compressed anyways. But there's always that select few that are oddballs.
