Production music in commercials

Mor Furniture and Oasis Bedrooms are two of the biggest advertisers on Phoenix cable TV. Their ads appear constantly in the local blocks. They appear to be co-owned or use the same firm for their TV spots.

Three times, I have found these production tracks as background music to Mor and Oasis commercials. All are from the Network Music library and have been used in news opens:

Awesome (WKYT 1988)
Full Potential (WSFA 1996 5pm among others)
Reach for the Gold (KTXL 1986)

It is so strange to hear these production cuts and know they were once used to open newscasts.

Any similar cases you know of?

I can think of a very similar case. Have any of you heard the piece of production music called "Life is Great" by Steve Baker? It's by APM Music, you can find it on their website. It has been used on commercials as heard on WWLI Lite Rock 105 in Providence, RI. But that is not the first place I heard that music being used. If you can believe it, the first place I ever heard it was actually on Sesame Street! It was used in a live-action film series with kids going to the doctors. Here is an example of one of those films:

I've heard The Weather Channel and the Scripps family of networks (HGTV, Food Network, etc.) use a number of cuts available on killertracks.com.

That's not really so unusual. The large libraries (APM, FirstCom, Killer Tracks, 615, Opus, etc.) charge far less per needledrop (or "laserdrop," as it's now referred to) than a composer or musician would for an original piece of music. It's also not unusual for a piece that was used as a news open to turn up in a spot 20 or 30 years later. One notable example is "Heavy Action" (KPM), originally used as the intro to a British sports show, later used as the iconic theme for "ABC's Monday Night Football" (and rearranged by Edd Kalehoff for the ESPN version), and now that track turns up in Papa John's TV commercials. (Not surprisingly, since PJ's is the "official pizza" of the Dallas Cowboys.)

I've wanted to use old news opens in some of the videos I produce, but many of them were custom scored (even though they were licensed through a large library - think Stephen Arnold's WFAA/Dallas cuts, licensed through 615, but not available in their library).
