Profanity on HD 2 or 3 channels

In the case of "Pepper", the name of the song may have been the only thing mentioned on-air, and not the group's name.

Context, sir.

When "Me So Horny" by 2-Live Crew hit the Top 40 in 1989, the name of the song was just not mentioned. Given that, it's probable that Casey just mentioned the name of the song.

With that phrasing -- and that is the entirety of your post, with no editing -- it reads more like you were referring to the 2Live Crew song in your first sentence with your statement in the second.

I'm sorry but I don't remember Casey Kasem not mentioning the title "Me So Horny," by 2 Live Crew on the air. I was listening at the time (sometimes in the shower) and he would list the song title on the air. In fact, while the song was still on the top-40, Casey also aired a story on the lawsuits being brought against both the song and 2 Live Crew frontman Luke Campbell (who was using the name Luke Skywalker without the permission of the Star Wars creator and producer, George Lucas). Now, AT40 always made sure to play the radio edit version of the song while it was on the countdown but the word "Horny" like the word "Butthole" was never considered an offensive word by either the FCC or George Carlin.

I suppose we will next be discussing the song "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd.

Well, maybe they had special edits, or versions, of AT40 for those stations that didn't want that title said on their air. I remember listening to one or two "American Top 40" countdowns where the name of the song was not mentioned.

Thanks for sharing. I thought it was clear that when I wrote ... only mentioning the song, not the band name, that I was referring to "Pepper" by the B.H. Surfers.

Because KRKE in Albuquerque, which I program under contract, runs the classic AT40 shows on Sunday, I often have the occasion to look at the original cue sheets for specific shows, and ABC/Watermark usually produced shows that included songs with potentially offensive titles with "cue breaks" and instructions for the stations on where to edit if they wanted to omit those songs.

I'm attaching the page on same for the June 27, 1987 program that included George Michael's "I Want Your Sex". There were similar instructions on the cue sheets each week while that song was on the charts. I see no reason why similar edit instructions could not have been given for deleting the announcing of a title or artist in later shows.

I guess in that case Casey wouldn't have been playing the "Dead Dog" rant if it had been released and made the Top 40. Maybe someone should release a list of bloopers/gaffes/rants from AT 40. I'd listen to that!

I believe everything that exists along those lines has already been made public.

Yeah, just found a Youtube video of them, Should have checked there first. But still would like to hear ....."And coming in at #1 on the AT 40 bloopers and gaffes for the 6th week in a row is the "Dead Dog" rant.......let's start again. You see, you come outta these goddamn downtempo blooper numbers where it's the same #1 week after week after week it's impossible for me to sound lively and people can HEAR me rolling my eyes over the airwaves....they do this to me all the time.....wadda you mean you're still recording? That's ponderous man, turn it off.......No? Wadda you mean "NO"?.......You think this could be the new #1 gaffe next weekend?"

Shadoe Stevens was hosting AT40 when 2 Live Crew was on the charts. I don't know how they handled it on the show.

Casey's timing in leaving while AT40 was still wedded to the Billboard Hot 100 was impeccable.

However, that song's release coincided with "Casey's Top 40" premiering on Westwood One (both near the end of January 1989), so Casey must have had to deal with it on that program.

What time of day did you hear this? There's some leniency after 10PM (Safe Harbor aka watershed)

edited to mention: Songs with profanity were commonplace on WCSB during these hours, and still are on WRUW

The vast majority of "American Top 40" countdowns I've ever heard were on the weekends between 8:00 am and noon. They were never on in the overnight (midnight to 6:00 am) hours, that I recall. Currently in the Cleveland, Ohio area, "American Top 40" airs on WAKS, 96.5 FM, Sunday morning from 8:00 until 11:00 am.

Oh, I can remember AT 40 airing late Sunday nights when Casey was hosting. Think it went from either 9 pm to 1 am or 10 pm to 2 am. For some reason they quit playing it early AM on Saturday/Sunday mornings. Can't remember what station it was on at the time. But it made me happy cause early AM was my middle of the night and I was sawing logs. After a while it just vanished off the airwaves from any station for a good long while.

Actually, I should say that the majority of "American Top 40" broadcasts occur between 6:00 am and noon. On WAKS, it's on Sunday morning from 7:00 am until 11:00 am. If you look, you'll probably find times when the show aired in the afternoon and at nights on some stations.

I was just thinking at the time that it was odd to air AT 40 where it's ending at 1 or 2 AM on an early Monday morning. Most people had to be up early for work and unless they're recording it probably not going to be listening to it. I'm assuming the station was just burning off it's contract to air it.
