Prog Talk w/o AAR

A lot of people are convinced Air America Radio IS progressive talk radio. Not true. There is a lot of good progressive talk programming out there - and much of it was going strong well before AAR launched. And it is available online via live audio stream or podcast subscription.

Check it out. Some is syndicated. Some is local. This list includes only weekday hosts. There is more progressive talk available on weekends. And if you know of other progressive talk hosts outside of AAR please feel free to add to the list. Liberals are known for supporting the underdog. Give these "other" progressive talk shows a chance to be heard and recognized.

All times shown are Eastern.

Thank's for the list! I'm listening to Wendy Wilde right now and she sounds great. I'm surprised her station calls itself Air America Minnesota, though. They even have Ed Schultz promoting "Air America Minnesota." I'm sure he cringed at that, given his frustration at callers who confuse his show with AAR programming.

I'm listening to Charles Goyette on KXXT, which calls itself "Air America Phoenix." I'm sure that "mwebster" will cringe at THAT, given his continuing anti-AAR campaign. BTW, KXXT also carries AAR newscasts.

Yea, there's definately an issue some people in here have with Air America. It looks like AA is here to stay and growing. They've purchased a second uplink channel to carry their syndicated programing.

Times given are EASTERN Times

I notice 2 Seattle folks on this list, Dave Ross and Mike Webb. The times listed for them must be Eastern time zone times, as Dave Ross does afternoon drive on KIRO, and Mike Webb is on 9 pm until 1 am.

Mike Webb - I would call him progressive.

Dave Ross is just a liberal, NOT to be confused with Progressive.
Does anyone remember Phil Oakes, the 60's folk singer? He had a song, the chorus of which was:

"Help me, Help me, Help me, I'm a liberal!". Dave Ross should use this as a theme song, don't ya know!!

Doug Stephan... Conswervative

Looks funny to see you list Doug Stephan as a "Liberal". I'm sure he would disagree with you all the way.
Maybe it just underscores the widening gap between the Conservatives and the Neoconservatives.<P ID="signature">______________

15 Additional Left-Leaning Hosts...

Good list, thanks!

Here are 15 more...some are far to the left, others closer to the center:

Weekdays: Peter B Collins (540 KRXA/Monterey/Salinas/SantaCruz), Hart Kirch (KDWN/Vegas), Mark Levine (talk star), Laura Flanders (San Francisco local show), Chuck Harder (talk star), Tony Trupiano (MTRN), Lionel

Weekends: Bob Brinker (ABC), Jay Diamond (WRKO), John Rothmann (KGO), Karel (KGO), Erin Hart (KIRO), Carl Jeffers (KIRO), Turi Ryder (KIRO), Bernie Ward (Sunday Mornings)

Re: Times given are EASTERN Times

Actually it was Love Me, I'm a Liberal

> "Help me, Help me, Help me, I'm a liberal!".

It was later updated by Jello
Biafra and Mojo Nixon on their "Prairie Home Invasion" album,

http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~trent/ochs/lyrics/liberal.html

Lyrics to revised version (scroll down a bit)

http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Congress/2503/lyrics06.html

I cheered when Clinton was chosen
My faith in the system reborn
I'll do anything to save our schools
If my taxes aint too much more
And I love Blacks and Gays and Latinos
As long as they don't move next door

Chorus:
So love me, love me, love me,
I'm a liberal

I have heard Stephanie Miller mix mentions about Air America in and she is Jones/DN (but should be drafted by AAR syndication IMHO). She said today they just picked up an affiliate, but I didn't catch the calls, in Minneapolis, maybe KTNF-AM 950 AM?

According to the website she is on versus Stephanie Miller and Stephanie said she pulled in a new affiliate today in Minneapolis. Has Wendy been dropped for Steph? Is Steph on another station or is she being tape-delayed?

Wendy Wilde is now doing 6am to 9am, followed by two hours of Miller, followed by three hours of Al Franken.

Yes, and despite their recent gains in 12+ numbers, this is stupid imaging on their part. They have Steph Miller on at midnight... ugh.

Listen while you can; KXXT was sold to a religious outfit last week.

Yeah, I heard Steph mention her new affiliate as "Air America Minnesota" on Monday. She doesn't cringe QUITE as much as Big Eddie does, tho. :D

It's probably best for the station to move their flagship local host into AM drive.

Why do you keep saying this? There is not one person on this forum I've seen who believes this. I love Stephanie Miller more than all the rest and she's a DR host. Nobody is denying these other shows "a chance." I wouldn't mind it if two libtalk stations in town competed with each other with different shows. Anything to bring diversity to the airwaves is good stuff.

I agree: on-air diversity of viewpoints is good. And in a handful or markets, two progressive talk stations are already competing with each other. I'd also welcome some true libertarians and a good old fashioned socialist or two into the fray.

On this board, many people do say "Air America" when they clearly mean "progressive talk." Many people act like if a station clears a program from DR or someone else, or puts on a local progressive host instead of the AAR Feed, this is somehow a defeat.

Piquant does not have a Trade Mark on Air America. I understand an airline first operated under that name. Then a movie (not connected to the airline). A company that makes paintball equipment has the domain name airamerica.com. But from reading this thread, it does sound like "Air America" is moving from brand name to generic name in common usage (like Kleenex and Aspirin did). It's gone beyond callers (and posters) speaking of all progressive talk radio as "Air America," if other hosts are using the phrase in their station promos.

Then again, I hear people say "NPR," even when they are talking about "Prarie Home Companion," "Marketplace" or other shows from PRI and APM.

If Big Ed's going along on this one, so will I.

Now I think I'll listen to Arnie.

I think you may be the only person that looks at things the way you mention.
(Tempest in a tea pot, maybe ? = no idea, but it sounds like it - IMHO)

I do want to thank you for the list, the number of hosts is increasing and thats good news. I was able to share this detailed list with many people who would be interested in all the choices available. I guess the original thoughts that "no one would listen to progressive talk" are slowly being proven wrong...thats always a good thing.

good for you for posting it......thanks

Who? Name names. I have never seen anyone say that AAR -is- progressive talk. I don't see a DR show replacing an AAR show a "defeat." As long as it is a good show that gets on based on merits and not launch bonuses.

Actually it was also the name of a clandestine radio station years ago as well. I see some detractors who bash all libtalk under the AAR banner (O'Reilly especially), but nobody here confuses the two.

The bar for success keeps getting changed by conservative critics of the formula. Since the "nobody listens" argument failed, now anything less than a top 5 in the market rating is a "failure." A station dropping AAR means libtalk is a "failure" while three stations adding it is ... silence.

That and libtalk is made up of America hater traitors... at least according to O'Reilly. :)
