The Osterhout Free Library, 71 South Franklin Street, Wilkes
Barre will be hosting a program this Thursday evening Sept
29th at 7PM featuring "A RADIO STORY". Admission is free. Topics of
discussion will be the book, the way it was formulated and
the state of radio as it exists today. If it gets really
boring, I'll pull out some of my records like Chet the engineer
did. That'll empty the place out. For more info call 570-823-0156.

Some years back, the library asked me to give a talk on Hallowe'en customs at the end of October to their small lunchtime lecture "crowd." They had seen my piece in the previous year's Citizens' Voice; a very light, humorous explanation of what we do and where we got it.

Between the booking and the lecture, that poltergeist b.s. with the Smurl girl started up. When I arrived at the OFL, the second-floor lecture room was fairly crawling with media, in addition to curious laypeople who wanted to hear my talk. The media folks would not take "It's just a light talk about Hallowe'en customs" for an answer; they wanted poltergeist stuff and heavy-duty religious implications. So I began to talk in fractured sentences, getting halfway thru and then going back to start another train of thought. I kept this up for about a minute before they got the point and shut down. There was not one complete sentence they could use as a sound bite. I just smiled and said, "Guys, I told you: It's a light talk about Hallowe'en customs. Bye."

Don't mess with a radio guy.

That's a great story. You should advise some
candidates who need to stay on message. I do not
expect a media throng there so I will hopefully
speak in full sentances.
