Programmers gone nuts

KPLZ just played Big and Rich, have they lost their cowboy minds??? KMPS has been the WOLF's whipping boy and now KPLZ is trying to join in the fun. Saw the R@R article, seems like age has finally claimed a PD's mind. Big and Rich into Akon into Nickelback. That is suicide, not a format.KBSG just played Wild Cherry into the Beatles into Phil Collins. Huh? Who the hell would listen to that mix???I heard KJR-FM the other day play Hootie and the Blowfish into the Rolling Stones. Huh??? Who the hell would listen to that mix??? Read the article in R@R by Kent Phillips at KPLZ and get the idea of what he is doing, but this ain't 1980. That kinda radio won't fly pardner. Do you really think the same woman that listens to Rascal Flatts likes Nickleback and Gwen Stefani? Saw the big jump in women quoted in the trends, but it is like drivin by a trainwreck, do ya really want that kinda radio all the time. Stick to the tried and true formats and do them well, that's how you succeed. COuntry, AC, Classic Hits: real formats that win.

ain't you heard? Country has gone mainstream for the most part and that means lots of cross over. The rest sounds like Jack stations???? Not sure what is goig on there.

Posters gone nuts! Take it from someone with some credibility and inside know. KJR-FM don't play no Hootie ya Hoochie.
Don't you know your artists or are you just making stuff up? You and Mama oughto get together. What's with the names anyway?
Take it from me?
Mama knows best?
The names alone show how egotistical you are. Too bad you have 0 credibility too.
If you're gonna make stuff up, you at least need to base it on some fact if you're to be at all believable.
Experience talking...

Hey there cowboy. Ever heard of Mediabase? Don't believe me, check it out for yourself. KJR has spins on artists like Matchbox 20, Sheryl Crow and whatdaknow there is the Hootie I heard. KBSG actually has multiple spins on Wild Cherry and KPLZ admits in print to playing 20% country, which explains the B@R cut. Unlike Mamma who rants sometimes, you can easily check this out with something called a COMPUTER. Why not discuss the merits of the post or are you more comfortable attacking the poster. So how about answering the question: will this kind of programming work? Are these PD's insane. I admit I have respect for Jay Kelly, Kent Phillips and don't know the new guy at BSG. THey may just be past their prime or on to something. Guess ratings will tell if these cowboys will sinks or swim.

What's with the Wolf playing big n' rich over and over again?? Reboot the automation!

Blah, blah, blah into blah, blah, blah. Who are we to judge? Listeners simply want to hear familiar hits that they like. Doesn't matter how they go together. That is what has changed. Rascal Flatts into Nickelback? The average 35 year old female couldn't care less. As programmers, we need to get over ourselves. The reality has changed. Play familiar hit records that work. It ain't boeing dreamliner science!

wolf's big and rich over and over and over.. (save a horse, ride a cowboy the only song played 7-mid) was a radio stunt. A horrible one by the way! The new evening guy started today.

Here's an idea, lets piss of the listeners by playing the same song over and over, maybe they will accept our new jock with open arms!! come on!

I didn't listen long, but did he even crack the mic? Seems like they would make the stunt feel more "on purpose" than just their computer glitching...

Heh.. My wife's Ipod has all 3 artists.. She's 28. Yeah, I think KPLZ is right on target.

So what happened to the 'Possum guy? Did he move on or move into a different position? Just curious here.

As far as this question about the mixed music mess, I refer you to my post from 2006: http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,39192.msg265469.html#msg265469 where I suggested just this kind of an idea. Programmers, get it figured out. People don't fit tidily into a single category. Most of us like a whole variety of different kinds of music. And this is the way you are going to compete with the iPod- by playing different stuff & exposing us to new things to like. All of that said, just playing the top hits off of all the different charts isn't going to cut it for me either; I'm all about deep album cuts. Play me something I didn't hear yesterday & the day before & the day before too.

Pick a side....???

I'm kind of confused.

On one hand I see all these musings here about how radio is boring, dead, needs some new creativity, needs new talent, etc.

Someone tweaks something ... and then we get all these posts that say "you have to follow the RULES and be like this format everywhere else in the country."

That whole "gotta follow someone's idiot definition of a crap format" is exactly what trashed the whole radio game. Kudos to ANY station that says "we're going to try something". Free FM, Jammin' Oldies, Jack, Movin, and on and on ... they launch and get trashed because they aren't the "same-old same-old". Some of them go down in flames ... but at least they TRY SOMETHING and learn from it.

The "gotta color inside the lines" is exactly why I haven't been able to figure out how to turn my radio on for the last eight years. Don't feel like I'm missing a single thing!!

Well said, LBB.

I agree, try something different! Glad Kent has the balls to do.

The Big and Rich thing on the wolf last night was a stunt. The dude cracked the mic multiple times an hour, saying "Here's Shania Twain on The Wolf" and would go to Save a Horse, Ride A Cowboy. He aired phone calls of listeners saying "why are you playing the same song over and over" he'd respond with "what are you talking about? you didn't hear LeeAnn Rimes minutes ago" highly doubt it was a glitch.

I heard Possum was the new Program Director at the Wolf by the way. Mahalick launched and moved on.
