Programming Challenge :-)

In the thread directly below, saintrichard, BobAltimari, kbuzz and I all seem to want a Rocker in Philly that smokes and blazes a new path. (Paraphrasing here guys, with your permission.) With that in mind, put on your programmer's pointed hat and try the following:

If you could dial up the "perfect" Philly Rock station for just a half-hour, what kind of jock would we hear, what seven or so tunes would we hear, what positioning/imaging would we hear and what kind of promotion/contest would we hear?

Give it a shot!

A tough call, because it's hard to gauge a consensus from a large majority of rock fans on just what you are asking about. Some want a "classic rock that really rocks" station, some want a Y-100 type station, some want WDRE back, some want a hair band station, some a commercial AAA station, etc.

Me, I want the 80s era of WMMR back. A mix of classic and new rock that flows evenly from one track to the next, jocks that know the music and make you feel like a family, and imagin that makes those points clear. I'm probably in the minority because it seems most Philly rock fans these days don't want classic and new rock on the same station.

Here's my two cents...

I'm thinking of a rock station that's completely void of Hair Bands, Nu Metal, Metallica, and all their 21st Century imitators. Basically, everything heard on YSP and MMR would be eliminated. On the other side of the spectrum, the boring elements (Lilith Fair singer-songwriters, old folkies, new folkies, blues) would be eliminated from what XPN offers. What's left is smart, catchy, cool rock music of the last 40 years. Here's a sample hour:

Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
David Bowie - Hang on to Yurself
U2 - I Will Follow
White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Kinks - Until The End of the Day
Beck - Girl
Joe Jackson - I'm The Man
Robert Palmer - Bad Case of Loving You
Cake - Short Skirt, Long Jacket
Squeeze - Hourglas

The music would mainly consist of the best of 60's garage rock, 70's punk, 80's new wave, and 90's alternative. New additions and older songs that would fit the sound would also be part of the mix.

It's somewhat like MMR would have been if they didn't decide that playing Guns 'n Roses and Nickelback all the time was a good idea.

That is a really hard question, but I would like to hear tunes from Def, Judas, Ozzy/Sabbath, Motorhead, Maiden, Mega mixed with Screaming Trees, Nirvana, STP, Sex Pistols, Chevelle, Ramones, Alice in Chains, White Stripes, with some newer stuff, CKY, Trapt, New Found Glory, AFI. I would just want to hear title and artist, time, traffic, forcast and temp, no loud or annoying long jock talk, and for gods sake no sports rant :). I did notice YSP now playing Cold Play and really mixing it up music wise and MMR giving Kid Rock a spin. I guess both stations are giving it their all, which may be good for us stagnant rock listeners, let the rock wars begin.

I would say a mix of the new and old (not so much geezer/freedom rock, but classic rock that really rocks/hair bands, etc) and limit the jocks to just (cringe) liner-card reader. The focus should be the music, outside of morning drive. Couzin Ed would be my choice post-Howard. He's a smart@$$, but knows when to shut up and rock./ <P ID="signature">______________

I would like a DJ like Eddie Trunk (sp?) from VH-1 Classics. Promotions would include the typical free ticket give-away, meet the band type things - all music related. Picking 7 or so songs would be the hardest part though:

1. We Want the Airwaves - The Ramones
2. Down in a Hole - Alice in Chains
3. Mirror Mirror - Def Leppard
4. Fire Woman - The Cult
5. Kings and Queens - Aerosmith
6. Gimme Shelter - The Stones
7. Lake of Fire - Nirvana
8. Piece of My Heart - Janis Joplin
9. The Four Horsemen - Metallica
10. Remedy - Seether (Had to have something new in there).
