Programming changes at KTVK!

Lessee here...

Add 4:30-5am, that's +:30.
Add 9-10pm, that's +:60.
Remove 10-10:30pm, that's -:30.

For a net gain of...oops, wait a minute...

Removed 8-8:30pm in the recent "Sander-sizing"
of the station, that's -:30.

Plus :90, minus :60. Net gain of :30 at

Notice how the press release didn't come out
and say "we're dumping the 10pm" (just referring
to an "alternative" at ten) or that "we already
dumped the 8pm."
 
But a careful reading of the press release reveals that Good Day Arizona will be reduced to 30 minutes (11am to 11:30am) -- a net loss of 30 minutes. So, the amount of news will remain the same at 52 hours per week.

So let's start guessing what will they put in place at 11:30am? An infomercial? One of Byron Allen's junket-fests? Benny Hinn? Or those educational programs that are scheduled for Saturday afternoons?
 
Maybe they could revive one of their lifestyle/shopping "informercial" programs -- like "Midday Shopping A to Z" or something like that.
 
WHAT IS GOING ON OVER THERE? :mad: I JUST GOT A POST ON MYSPACE TELLING SAYING THAT BIG BEN (LONG TIME RADIO VET AND MUSIC DIRECTOR OF GOOD MORNING ARIZONA) WAS RELEASED ALSO. IS THAT WHY THE MORNING SHOW SOUNDS LIKE THEY AREN'T PLAYING ANY MUSIC ANYMORE. DID HE TAKE THE MUSIC WITH HIM? THAT SUCKS IF HE DID. ANY WORD IF HE WAS RELEASED IN THE GREAT WORKFORCE EXIT? THAT STINKS BECAUSE HE REALLY BROUGHT ALOT TO THE MORNING SHOW. ANY THOUGHTS?
 
Actually, dropping the 10 PM news makes some sense. KTVK hasn't had a network affiliation for far more than a decade, so they should program accordingly. And why should FOX 10 have 9 PM to themselves? There are too many newscasts at 10 PM and they are all basically the same. A little counter-programming is wise.
 
Additionally, if you read Michael Hagarty's news ratings post, KTVK was last at 10pm. It makes more sense to compete at 9pm. If they will just do the major news and weather during the first 30 minutes of the newscast. I hate listening to Fox 10 because they don't do weather until 9:47 and only give Dave about 2 minutes.

Giving Dave only 2 minutes may be Fox 10's biggest strength. Now, if only KPHO would eliminate Steve Garry, all would be right with the universe once more... ;)
 
KTVK's now airing promos for the new 9:00 spot.

So is Tara Hitchcock going to start coming in early or still work "bankers hours" as the host of a 4 1/2 show while only being there for 3 hours? Are they finally going to give poor Olivia Fierro a break by having Frank Camacho do the 11:00 news by himself?
 
I'm surprised that they let Tara work those hours, but maybe they're afraid of losing her now that she has a family.

As for Frank, he's solid but not very lively. The midday show would be dull if Frank solo-anchored. Maybe they could have Tess Monday-Wednesday and then Kristen on Thursday and Friday or something like that.
 
New configuration starts Monday. Overall, I think KTVK made some good decisions. Starting off at 4:30 am is a no-brainer. I periodically watched First Business at 4:30 but would turn to KPHO to catch traffic reports. Now I can leave it on Channel 3. 10:00 probably wasn't going to get any higher rating so why not take a chance and go after Fox 10 at 9:00? I would have left Good Day Arizona for the full hour.

The most important question: Will Tara Hitchcock be front-and-center at 4:30 Monday morning?

I always thought Tara would be better at a morning magazine show like Your life or something like that. She is more into the celebrity/local dish than reporting news.

The thing is that FOX 10 has a 14 year head start on its 9pm newscast, and has the benefit of having the FOX lead-in. I believe that there is room for two 9pm newscasts in Phoenix, but I'm not convinced that 3 will end up #1. Another question is with the new 9pm cast, where will they be producing the Tucson-cast for KMSB now?

As for the 4:30am show, with all the bad luck Channel 5 has had (especially their first-to-worst performance at noon this past sweeps), they'll be number one from the first day. The 11am show has a very bad lead-out (I would have chosen a replay of the previous day's "Inside Edition" over "Your New House," which should be airing at 3am - it's not made to be a Monday through Friday show).

Time will tell about the new 9pm show. #2 at 9pm may be better than #5 at 10pm! I'm looking forward to watching 3TV at 9pm. I really don't like FOX10 News at 9pm because you have to wait through 45 minutes of news to get to sports and weather. If 3 is smart, they will do earlier sports and weather segments.

I agree about GMAZ. I think that they'll be #1 at 4:30am once everyone finds them. I'm sorry that they shortened the 11am show to 30 minutes. The hour format with Olivia and Frank was actually pretty good!

I agree! While I didn't get the chance to watch GDAZ much, Hitchcock wasn't the greatest news reader. I doubt KTVK would make the move for two reasons: 1. Don't make the regular GMAZ upset by moving/replacing the anchor, 2. I think Lisa Haffner does a fantastic job on Your Life A to Z.

Great points, plus FOX has Hook and Lake, who are the reigning longevity news duo in the Valley. The February 09 Sweeps will be interesting.
 
So at 4:30 it was just Scott Pasmore and Olivia Fierro doing the news plus Brittney Shipp on weather patrol and a new female (forgot her name! :'( ) doing business news. Tara Hitchcock still came in at 6:00.
 
The first 9pm show was pretty good. They did weather at least 3 times during the newscast (first one by 9:15pm). Also, they have an extended interview segment featuring Sheriff Joe -- a one-on-one interview done by Beverly. Whether or not you are a Sheriff Joe fan, the interview did help me understand where he's coming from.

Of course, there were some "first-day" glitches but all in all it seems like a decent newscast. I'll definitely be watching!
 
Maybe it's me but I just can't get excited enough to watch any local "news" program regardless of the air time or "talking head" personalities. Most of what is presented as "news" is actually pulled right off the national news which airs either immediately prior or immediately following the local variety. And it's even more rediculous when back-to-back "news" shows are aired. If I wanted that I'd be watching CNNH.

There is, of course, some local "news" if you consider freeway collisions or house fires of paramount interest. Nothing in depth except titillating stories of the sexual habits of high school girls during sweeps week.

And I am consistently amazed at newbie "newspeople", and even the old-timers, getting pronunciation of local (meaning Arizona) locales and places of interest wrong.

And the weather idiots....maybe in places like the Midwest where weather is of great interest, but central Arizona? Duh....it's summer. Gonna be hot today, hot tomorrow and <yuck, yuck, yuck> hot next week....so we'll show you the temps from wherever it is you came from.

And the so-called sports "news". Usually out of date by at least one day and nothing about any of the non-big-four sports (which also includes our neglected local NHL franchise). Oh, wait, one station does broadcast high school football....once per week after virtually all adults have gone to bed and then with sideline cameras jerking so badly you can't discern the school colors much less their names.

And just who was the Bright Light that broadcasts "news" shows at prime commute time? Last time I looked the freeways were packed at 5PM and, yup, still packed at 5:30.

The proliferation of "news" shows seems to serve only two purposes:

1) Provide a cheap-to-produce local show (for licensing purposes most likely).
2) Provide a forum for endless car dealers to shout their wares (revenue).

I can get tons more information from the web in 15 minutes than by watching every "news" show on every channel in Phoenix in a day. Oops, that would require reading. Ahhhhh....that's the answer.
