Seattle ratings out today.
The question in market #14 for those of us following progressive talk will be the performance of "Seattle's Progressive Talk AM 1090" (KPTK-AM) versus "Newsradio 710 KIRO" for 25-54 10a-3p.
Currently, 1090 offers Hartmann 9a-NOON, and Ed Schultz NOON-3p.
KIRO continues to offer various substitute hosts 9-NOON, with conservative Dori Monson NOON-3p. Dori and the current substitute host (John Proccacino) cover lifestyle talk topics in addition to politics. Listeners who want all politics change the dial.
Due to the loss of KIRO veteran personality Dave Ross from 9-NOON (now afternnons 3p-6p), and one substitute after another mornings, the test will be to see if Hartmann/Schultz/1090 WIN in the 25-54 ratings over KIRO (and also the Rush affiliate KTTH-AM, and FOX/Hannity affiliate KVI-AM).
Hartmann replaced Al Franken on 1090 in September, at the same time when Stephanie Miller replaced Morning Sedition.
Overall, it seems that KIRO-AM has changed its approach to talk in emphasizing more lifestyle talk in several dayparts, including 10a-3p.
KPTK-AM 1090 has seen increased ratings 12+ consistently since the format changed from "classic country" (KYCW-AM) in Nov 2004. The station is one of those rare Progressive Talk / Air America stations with 50,000 watts, both day and night.
If 1090 wins 10a-3p, it will be a major victory for progressive talk, and numbers could be used to increase the credibility of progressive talk in general. On the other hand, the reason 1090 might beat KIRO (and perhaps KTTH and KVI) would be in part from poor programming decisions at the other talk stations.
