Clear Channel Progressive Talker KLSD showed a 72% increase in 12+ AQH share in the fall book over the summer book. KLSD now is in 11th place in the "Beauty Contest" numbers (and third place among talk stations). Salem's KCBQ holds steady at the back of the pack with fractional 12+ numbers.

Other markets:

In New York, AAR LMA WLIB up slightly in the overall numbers and well ahead of Salem's WMCA (although still substantially trailing two established talk stations). The New York Daily News published top results for the 25 to 54 demo and for AM drive this morning and WLIB did not place among the stations listed. WLIB ranks 23rd in New York 12+ AQH; Salem's WMCA 37th. WLIB got minimal or no numbers in New York's suburban markets.

In LA, Clear Channel's KTLK placed 35th, down slightly and trailing Salem's KRLS (32nd) - both with fractional 12+ numbers and both well behind two established AM talkers.

In Chicago, rimshot progressive talker WCPT places 30th with fractional 12+ AQH numbers - slightly ahead of Salem's WIND at 32nd but way behind two established talkers.

A primer: stations west of the Mississippi use "K" prefixes.

WMCA and "WMCA2" WWDJ aren't really talk stations; having Dr. Laura a day old on a marginal signal for two hours mixed in with paid religious rubbish doesn't make one a talk station.

To clarify, KRLA.

I assume you meant KLSD?

Can anyone in suburban NY even hear the signal?

What is odd is that for the "liberal left coast," they have the most strident Christian outlets outside of the Bible belt. We don't have anything that strident here in WNY, but in the state that brings us TBN and the late Gene Scott, strident is in.

KTLK is another station I thought with signal issues. I don't know what the coverage is for KRLS.

Chicago is still a mess for AAR and is going to be until they can land a station that people can actually hear.

To be fair to WLIB, the only talk station that DID appear on that list was sports-talker WFAN, and it was last on the list.

WXRK was on that list -- I'll bet that WFNY won't be on the next version of that list.

[Just one minor correction -- I note that WOR was also on the AM drive list, but (of course) not on the 25-54 list. WABC was absent from both.]

WCPT is a 2500W directional class D (daytimer) getting phenomenal ratings considering. With that stick NewsWeb should be head over heels with the format.

The boards at AAR complain about the station strength regularly.

No doubt AAR will find itself on a better signal soon with those numbers for a previously zero ratings station now within sight of a 1 share. Maybe WRLL?

Santa Barbara positives

Santa Barbara had almost a doubling in their 12+ AQH share, bringing station KIST-AM to the #9 station, and the #2 talk station in the "show/bragging rights" ratings...

No problem. I am 25 miles north of Manhattan and probably 30 miles or so noth east of the transmitter in Lindhurst and day and night they can be heard here with a city grade signal. I have a GE super radio by my bedside and can easily hear WLIB. While they aren't a 50 K non D station, they do have a very good NY area signal. A lot of complaints come from people who really aren't in the NY area. They might be 40 or 50 miles from the transmitter and in this market with our poor ground conductivity that's not the NY market. I've driven into Conneticut towards Massachussettes and heard WLIB quite well there too. NY has unusually large number of non d 50 K stations. There are many stations which are NY based, which have much poorer signals than WLIB. Part of the problem people have is channel activity. The number of day and night operators on 1190 and it's adjacents is much greater than those for 660, 770 and 880.

The key phrase here is "GE SuperRadio." Most people don't have them and therefore get lousy reception from NYC AM stations, unless they're listening to flamethrowers like WABC.

You mentioned Chicago for AAR, yet they run neck and neck with Salem's WIND that has a 24 hour signal and better coverage in the metro.

What?? Have you been to Chicago? This station does just fine thank you. It carried well into Indiana two weeks ago, and does quite well in the Loop. It puts out 10,000 ERP right towards Chicago which is nothing to sneeze at at 850.

And I bet that most of those people that complain dont live in Chicago as the station has a gret signal.

Unless you are talking about stations like WKY, WRR, WOW, WWLS, WBAP ya da ya da. Seriously dont you think it was just a typo??

I find it interesting why people compare AAR numbers to Salem all of the time. Why is that? Why not compare to the WABCs of the world? Isnt that a better comparision? Why compare at all?

You are probably right about that, I should have said they complain mostly about the short hours of operation of the station.

Because they're both third tier networks where ideology is the sole reason for existing. While a large number of mainstream talkers may have a conservative lean, they're not specifically marketed as such.

Actually 850 Chicago is on until Sunset Denver.

And why is that a problem? Almost everyone knows that people turn off radio after in the evening anyways.

So yes 850 does cover drive time.

But again, 850 Chicago is on until sunset Denver.

That's strange, because one of the people discussing the issue on the board said that the station was saying "all Franken all the time" because of how short the days are you could basically only hear Franken's show. Probably some exageration by the station.
