Robin Bergman is on a mission — and several Medford residents plan to help her.

Bergman, an Arlington resident and Concord-based businesswoman, is hoping to save “Boston’s Progressive Talk,” a radio program on WXKS AM and WKOX AM, which was taken off the air without advance notice at 12 noon on Dec. 21, 2006.

Since then, Bergman has started a Yahoo group to save the program. On Jan. 17, she and several other residents from across the Boston area met at the Medford Public Library, in the third public meeting to keep the city’s only full-time progressive show on the air.

Bergman said she was upset when she learned about the format change by reading rumors on the WXKS’ Web message board On Dec. 20. She had heard about a group protesting a similar situation in Madison, Wis. and was inspired to do the same in Boston.

“I came to depend on listening to ‘Progressive Talk’ while working every day,” she said. “I learned so much about what was going on in Washington and I enjoyed hearing other progressives call in from all over the country who were just as passionate and motivated as I am.”

Clear Channel Communications cancelled the progressive talk format shortly after that corporation was acquired by Mitt Romney’s former company, Bain Capital. (JV says Please Note: As it turns out, it looks like Bain does not have control yet...)

It was rumored that the decision was made the day after Election Day in November. Instead of liberal hosts from Air America and Jones Network such as Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes and Al Franken, the station has flipped to a Latin music format.

Two questions : Will you be giving away Randi Rhodes' Playboy poster at the meeting on Monday? What do you think about having the next meeting at Jacques?

actually, Brightonboris, the grass roots effort is to be commended. You don't see people getting together to support WILD like this after the initial protests. In fact, we should form a BRING BACK WILD committee and get both activist groups to take over expanded band radio.

3 New Stations:

1)Boston's Progressive Talk: Now on Expanded Band
2)expanded WILD radio
3)Casablanca Talk - Your Anti-WRKO station
A station completely devoted to tearing WRKO apart on the airwaves and making fun of their frequent faux pas

I read a post by Joe Gallant on another board that mentions what most likely will happen to WAVZ in New
Haven and maybe what happened with WKOX and WXKS: Clear Channel figures they can run one of
their weaker-signals AMs as "a computer in a closet". In fact that's probably what they're doing now with
WAVZ, only the programming will be changing from syndie prog. talk to syndie sports talk (ESPN).
I don't know if CC has any other signals in New Haven, but whatever money they make can subsidize
a smaller AM like WAVZ. Or WAVZ can basically break even or maybe even make a slight profit by running something like ESPN and have few employees (Something that probably was happening under their prog talk format too, but Joseph points out that CC feels it can sell sports but it can't
sell liberal talk.

Sound familiar? Before "The Mic" in Madison, WI, was "brought back" it was due to flip to Fox Sports for
the same reason.

So you have WKOX and WXKS here, weak signals, low ratings--but who knows if more promotion or
hiring local daily hosts could have made it profitable. I think CC felt it would make its money on FMs
like Kiss and WKOX/WXKS could break even or make a minimal profit with all-syndie--but here the format
was changed not to sports but to Spanish. Reason? More than enough sports stations in town already
(though conceivably they could have ripped Fox Sports affiliation from WEEI and run FSR 24/7--but
maybe they --i.e., their syndie brethren, Premiere--figured it's better off to have SOME Fox Sports
programming on a bigger signal with higher ratings...)

Anyway, they went to Spanish because they figured they could sell it. Had they made an effort to
"sell" WXKS/WKOX, who knows how they would have done? (Having only one daily local host could have
raised the profile of these stations and whatever money they spent on a salary could be made back
through advertising)

Anyway, there you have it: CC and their "computer in a closet" programming (at least on lower-powered AMs.)

I notice Rumba 1200 has their full site up now (at domains like wkoxam.com, rumba1200am.com , bostonsprogressivetalk.com-- not
.net of course, etc.) It kind of uses the same basic template some other CC stations have including the new
page of the ESPN 1300 that will soon debut in New Haven--the four ad squares down the bottom, for example.
It seems to not say anything about being simulcast on 1430...wonder if they may change that format perhaps
to prog talk after 1200 gets its power boost...?
Rumba has one page for its "locutores" ("speakers"? DJs, I assume)

The bostonsprogressivetalk.com domain name may or may not be renewed by CC depending on whether
or not the effort to bring libtalk back succeeds, I'd think. So if WXKS winds up doing AAR/Jones after
August, they could point it to a new site for that.

There's the DEADJAM at the Regent Theater in Arlington on the 3rd

I'll be there for that. Gave away tickets on the show yesterday.

Hey, Pelosi got surviving members of the Dead together to perform at her inaugural...
