Progressive United Communications?

Any theories on what happened to these genius operators?

After years of inept business practices, they simply just shut off the filaments and walk away? Come on, somebody MUST know the real story...

Have you tried contacting their main office in FL?

Found some info on one of their employees.

The man's name is Frank Cummings.

He's listed as their Vice President.

His contact info is provided here:

Frank J Cummings
218 Yarmouth Rd
Casselberry, FL 32730
(407) 339-1439

Hope this helps.

Funny, I know exactly where that address is. We had a place in Casselberry, on Lake Kathryn, many years ago. Trouble is, Mr. Cummings is in his 80's, and it appears he has not been involved with the company for quite some time. I'm wondering if that is why the license renewal applications were not filed.

The license renewal for WBYE wasn't filed in 2004, either, but after 10 months, it was reinstated by the FCC. It's been more than a year's time now since the license for 2012 expired (4/6).

What will become of the old WBYE building?  Went by there today and it still stands.  Surprised is hasn't been torn down already.

P.S. WLGD in Maplesville is still off.  Still waiting for them to sign on.  Hope it will soon happen.

i worked there in the late 80s when ben franklin owned the station. my understanding was that they were trying to GIVE the license to the university of montevallo as a teaching tool.

My dad, who used to work as an announcer at WBYE in the early 70's, told me that as well...that WBYE was attempting to give the station to the University of Montevallo. From what he told me, UM didn't want to invest the money to do it. WBYE did have their studios located on Main Street (Hwy 119), in close proximity to the University, for a short period of time several years ago...which would have worked out well if the University had decided to acquire the station. As much as I'd like to support the idea of UM taking over WBYE, most colleges and Universities are no longer interested in retaining their broadcasting properties and are opting to sell them instead; Chattanooga State's WAWL "The Wall" is one which comes to mind. I also just can't see how UM would justify taking on WBYE, as most college students these days have absolutely zero interest in AM radio.

I was at Calera High School a few nights ago for my kids' band concert and I noticed that WBYE's tower lights are out...again... ::)

Progressive United Communications is headed by a retired Methodist Bishop who is in his 90's. He turned the operation over to his idiot daughter who have made ruins of the stations they owned.

yep. that transmitter, a thousand watter if i remember right, was in perfect condition when i was there. ben, being a veteran engineer of radio, always kept his machines in top shape.

i remember the signal coming in well before i came off I65 at u of montevallo parkway/alabama 25 and staying with me all the way into montevallo and down into the brierfield historic zone that i visited so much.

passtheword, it isn't really a question of am radio. it is, i think, a question of who really wants to go to school to be on radio anymore. most radio jobs today are staffed by very low paid peons. there just isn't the market for a college degree level career anymore unless you are on the management side. add the fact that there are no real personalities being minted and that groups are cross imaging from one hub or the next and you might have twenty air people doing all or the majority of a group's on air content and radio as a career is almost as poor a choice as a babylonian tupperware salesman.
