Project 96.1 Naysayers: Get Ready To Eat Crow

For all the heat that "Project 9-6-1" takes on this board, it's only a matter of time that PPM comes to Atlanta and 96.1 will be in the Top 5, if not the Top 10. Clear Channel's equally lame-monickered "Radio 104.5" debuted in Philadelphia earlier this year and immediately made huge gains in PPM books that already saw big chunks of cume for established rockers WMGK and WMMR (all three are in the Top 10 in the latest PPM).

In Houston, the other market that's currently in PPM mode, alternative 94.5 The Buzz and sister classic rocker 93.7 The Arrow - also owned by Clear Channel, mind you - also finished in the Top 10.

And today, Clear Channel recently flipped urban "Power 104.1" to alternative with a name that sounds just as stupid: "fm 104 one". Gee, I wonder what that's all about.

They see this format making headway in the PPM's already in Philly. Sure, it may take a little longer in this area, but when Atlanta adapts to the PPM system, and you see WKLS in the top tier of stations, allow me to be the first to say "I told you so".

Right. I'll give you a dollar if WKLS breaks the top 5. Radio 104.5, personality-free, has already started to wane while WSYP is poised to surge with Kidd Kris helming the morning show.

Your prediction is noted. Can you use your powers to predict the mega millions numbers too? I could use a few extra bucks.

I don't care if they end up #1. It's still crap music and laughable being called "alternative". Hookless, pretentious, bottom-of-the barrel rock music for high school jocks with backward baseball caps.

Of course you don't care if they go number one, because IF it did happen, your stupid world would be crushed because you can't yank yourself out of the 70s. You must have some sort of vendetta against anything new because all you've ever been able to say is "no creativity, bottom of the barrell, pretentious, jocks, dudes, Regular Guys." I don't think the station will rocket to number one but it certainly may improve. So let's leave the hookless, pretentious, bottom-of-the barrel s**t talking to people who can live in the now because you seem to lack creativity and are, at times, "unreadable." Take your Elvis Costello handle and beat it.

You tell them, Perry! Don't the haters know that Project is on the cutting edge...with Bob Seger, Guess Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC.

Ummm,.....not a chance in a very warm place. PPMs will tighten the field 1-15 but dont expect any miracles. This is a high density AA market and the PPM's will show that. V103 will NOT be a 2-1 leader over number 2, and the rock will gain some share, but it is going to go to the River, DAVE, X and Project, and not just project. There is no chance the project will go top 5 especially with the poor excuse for moron, oops I mean morning show. Also I would imagine that a real classic rock will appear again somewhere on the scene before PPM's get here as classic rock is the format that jumps the most with PPM's.

I do this for living and have watched PPM numbers since they started testing in Houston. Now go get Chris Williams his coffee. You know how he hates it when it is cold.

Never said cutting edge, the classics are a little out of place

The funny thing about all this is that a main reason I bitch against their gawd awful music is because they ignore amazing NEW rock bands and settle for completely marginalized dung. The music of the 70's and 80's that paved the way for cool bands today is completely in the opposite direction of 96.1. If this board existed in 1989 I would have been bitching against 96.1 for only playing "classic rock". I never dreamed 18 years later a rock station playing new rock songs (with a supposed alternative bent) could actually sound worse than a classic rock station stuck on the same rotating songs.

Like I said, I really don't care if they go number one or not. I don't listen to FM radio much anymore. It's just fun to easily bash trite garbage.

if you had been listening to 96rock in 1989, you'd know they were playing classic rock AND new rock, about 60/40.

You are correct. I should not have said "only". At the time there was no commercial station in town playing alternative music. 96 wasn't playing new music that didn't fit in with the classic sound, though.

I enjoy reading comments like that. You may like the whole 9-6-1 thing, but one day it too will be replaced. The only thing that matters is ad $ales. One day 96 Rock is on top, the next day it's replaced by whatever the suits think will make more money. Like EVH said, "we're all on the big conveyor belt". Enjoy the ride Perry.

nothing like generic radio and formula music to attract listeners.

I was recently in Los Angeles and trapped in traffic for a few hours. I was blown away by the difference in radio talent. Those guys are good and in an all talk fm format that really seems to help when going 10 mph.
