Project 96.1

They went back to their traditional role of playing rock instead of the 70's corporate classic rock crap they had been stuck on recently. They sound great!

Edit: Green Day, Ugh! Cut it out, that's 99x's milqtoast territory!

CC or not, something needed to happen to this station other than the status quo. I'm glad a move was made and perhaps this will be a rejuvenation of the frequency and keep it around for another 23 years.

In the 80's 96 Rock played the equivelant of what they're playing with the new new change. I remember one of the jocks or program manager(?) said on air that they didn't like having to play the newer rock and would prefer to play 70's stuff if they had their way. That was 20 years ago that the struggle against playing anything newer than 1980 was going on and it's still going on today. I look at classic rock as crap I was tired of 20 years ago and wonder when it will just go away and give us back rock stations. And just because a station has a current playlist format doesn't mean they have to have smarmy, bratty sounding morning host for crying out loud!

It sounds like the only outrage/difference so far is the name change. I wonder if they wont stunt "project" for a week and then go back to 96rock. Just seems like a huge brand to simply throw away.

I agree. I think the name Project is just that it is the cover for their stunting as they introduce the new format into the market. And yes it is a new format this not what the Buzz was. In a lot of ways the buzz died also not that it had much history but adding classics into the mix changed that format as wellI think the name Rock comes back in time. Not as soon as a couple of weeks but I would target sometime in the first quarter of 2007.

They couldn't just change the format at 96 and keep the same name. They would have alienated the Buzz listeners who thinks it is too old for them but once they get use to the format the name won't matter as much.

If they handle this right I thing they have a winner on their hand. Now for their morning show though. That one is a tough one. They need to make the right choice there.

well i am gald its rock!! when i was in atlanta 96 rock was my favorite station. glad to see its return to rock. i was worried it would become country or something . that was before i started hearing the liners last night. this is good! classic rock is dead! not the artists of classic rock. just those stale 150 songs that were on the radio for the past 15 years! i still love ac/dc, sabbath, skynyrd and zeppelin but i dont love freebird, back in black, paranoid and stairway to heaven!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't live in "Hotlanta", but I do think the name is clever.

No doubt, this is huge. I've got a number of thoughts regarding this move, so forgive me if the following post is a bit messy...

It's always sad when a heritage station, such as 96Rock, goes away. You grew up with it and witnessed its glory days. You gained a passion for music because of it. But let's be honest. 96Rock was hurting, especially with the loss of The Regular Guys. The Buzz, on the other hand, has shown tremendous potential on the horrible 96.7 frequency and progress at southwest-heavy 105.3. In the meantime, 99X is at an all-time low. The Buzz's Active Rock format certainly earned the right to a full-market frequency, and WKLS needed a change.

Was this move handled in the right way? I think so. The playlist looks pretty focused, not terribly far off from what The Buzz was doing. As for the name change...I've got mixed emotions. I'm not 100% why CC would kill the Buzz brand, especially as it began to gain traction and recognition. But if they had to make a change, I like the "Project" moniker. It's different. It's cool. I'll give CC credit for going out-of-the-box with the branding rather than slapping on something tired like "96.1 The Bone" or "96.1 K-Rock".

I think the key here will be the airstaff and especially the morning show.

I do see though a bunch of other songs merged with the buzz playlist. I have listened on and off tofday betwen meetings and have heard both aerosmith and Led Zeppelin already twice today among the other songs from 96rock's playlist. I like it. Outside of TRG I stipped listening very much to 96 rock when Elton John became an artist.
