project - converting airchecks to mp3

I was a pretty active aircheck collector in the 90s. I have been trying to getting to transferring all my tapes to mp3 for yrs. Well that isn't happening! Looking for some recommendations on companies that would offer this service.

Az,

How many tapes are we talking about and what is their content? Cities, formats, years, etc.

There are many professional services out there but it can start adding up pretty quickly.

Depending upon the content you may get a volunteer or two willing to give you a hand from this group.

It's great to see that you are taking steps to preserve those airchecks!

Thanks for the reply! I use to live in Buffalo,NY up until 2000. My name is Dennis Decot (not sure if anyone knows me by that name since I collected airchecks quite frequently). I have alot of stuff from Buffalo, Toronto, as well as Phoenix which is where I live now. I also got into hot talk shows so I have alot of Bubba the love sponge, Don and Mike, Howard Stern, etc. I also liked format changes so I have a bunch of those as well. I also have on tape the Buffalo radio reunion that was held back in the 90s on WHTT. I probably have about 150-200 tapes or so. I am looking to get them all transferred to mp3.

It would be awesome if anyone would like to take part in this project with me. I was thinking we could post them all to some shared website and we all get the benefit of hearing this great radio. I plan to start this project next week while I watch tv in the evening LOL but let me know if anyone is interested.

As the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day. If you can discipline yourself to do one tape a day, you'll finish the job in about 6 months. That's not a long time considering how many years it took you to acquire them.

I bought a CC Witness, which can record AM and FM radio into mp3 format, but also has line-in access to be able to record from a cassette deck. I digitized all my tapes that way, and dumped the .mp3 files into the computer for corrections or storage transfer.

I would ask the question in relation to the MP3 files that are being created-what size are these files going to be?

Just as with creating WAV files, the higher the bitrate on MP3, the better quality you will get. Meaning that if you record these files at 320K the sound quality is going to be extremely good, whereas if you record the MP3 at CD level it will be more likely 128K or 192K. What size does the ION Tape setup record in MP3 and is it adjustable?

I have gear to transfer recordings; I also use Audacity and Power Sound Editor Free to do some of my own recordings with a decent sound quality.

I guess my question to the OP- are you looking for quality or quantity? If you record the MP3 at 320K the files are going to be a few GB each, whereas the smaller 128K or 192K size files will be a bit more manageable if you are talking about a full hour to two hour program.

Just my thoughts. I may be willing to help out. I am located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

As an aircheck collector I transfer my old RtoR's and cassettes all the time. If you need help I can handle just about any analogue format. [email protected]

I can also handle casette transfers to mp3 starting in late May or so.
I use 320 KBPS for FM stereo. since i still record cassettes while traveling, or in Fl i do this quite often.
if its AM then its 128KBPS, mono.
if it was AM stereo the same 320 rule would apply.
what do you guys do with your cassettes when you are done converting them?
i convert and reuse. i have only done conversion for cassettes I've made myself, not ones that others have made for me.
I'd be willing to help with cassette conversions.
I use Sound forge.

Hey Everyone
Thanks for the help! I am currently getting the first package of tapes ready to go out and will be contacting others when I have the next batch and so on. This past week I got about 10 tapes converted myself. Wow, loving finally putting the collection in digital format.

I just hope that everybody is useing flat outputs (as in direct RCA output from the cassette deck or mixer.
I've heard some airchecks that people have used an EQ during the recording.

Hi All,
I wanted to give you the link to my mediafire sight where I will be putting all of the airchecks from my collection. Feel free to go and download anything you want. I am in the middle of this project so much more will be added! Thanks so far to JT and Brian for helping me out with this project!
