Prompter Musings

It's been a while so here it goes: Watching WHEC's digital weather channel today, I see their "Coverage You Can Count On" promo---with their exiled ex-Sports Director Mark Gruba as part of it. Nice! 10 has had a rough go it as of late....completely missing the U of R worker getting seriously hurt on the job, etc... This is not the WHEC I grew up watching, they appear to be on the ropes, and 8 looks to be the aggressor.
On to 13---I soured on them last week when I saw a breaking news alert only to inform me a member of the Dave Mathews Band had died from injuries suffered in a ATV wreck from June. Enough said. Sad news for sure---but breaking news? It's baffling what has become of the Rochester TV market. The true grit will be shown on how these stations cover election night. I will be watching very closely.

Yeah that was weird. Couldn't believe it, especially when they didn't even do a desker or something since we had it on at 9pm that night. Came over loud and clear on the scanner: possible explosion with a person down.

Everyone watch R News instead!

What about the "breaking news alert" that said two cars had crashed and no one was hurt? Patrice Walsh looked embarrassed to be there. It feels as if anything that comes across the scanner at 5:00 is "breaking news."

It's very possible that Patrice was embarrassed to sent out to cover a non-story.

I just love it when reporters go to the scene of a vacant house fire and that is considered "breaking news."

This whole "Breaking News" format reminds me of the old story about the boy who cried wolf. Eventually these TV stations are going to keep it up with the bells and whistles for every non-story that the viewing audience is going to grow tired of the whole thing and just get their news from the internet; like I do.

That is exactly what they're doing.

As long as viewers want breaking news they will get it. For all the complaining stations hear about their breaking news coverage, countless studies have concluded that is what people want. It is supply and demand.

And what about those viewers who don't want "breaking news?" What if we just want REAL NEWS and not the Entertainment Tonight fluff that most TV operations offer today?
If we don't get that do we qualify for the countless studies that shows a continuing decline in the number of people who watch television news?

You are combining breaking news and entertainment...much different things.

What you have to remember about these "on the scene breaking news stories" is that, the if you don't use it, you loose it rule applies. News directors have to make out their budgets every year and give it to corporate. They have to prove they use up their budget- and usually ask for more funding. The reporters, shooters, live trucks, engineers, etc. have to be accounted for. If they have not used up the budget, it could very well be cut by the bean counters.
