Proof that hearing Hotel California repeatedly will drive you crazy

Of note: All of their Top 10 most played songs are from the 80s.

(OK, Heart of Glass is '79, but Blondie are identified with 80s)

I'll keep the Eagles version.

I have been a Eagles fan since I was a VERY young in the early 70's but for some reason ($$$) never got around to seeing them live, but that will be rectified next month when we will see them at the Honda Center. I was thinking about the concert this morning when a small little joke came to me: "What is the difference between an Eagles concert and K-Earth 101? At the Eagles concert, I will only have to hear "Hotel California" once in three hour span!" (drumcrash!)

Hey, I said it was small. I'll be here all week, please remember to tip your waitresses...

Oh, and they started playing Young MC's "Bust a Move" this week!

Aaahh. Rap on K-Earth 101. And we haven't heard "Rapture" or "Rapper's Delight"...or even "The Rapper" by Jaggerz.

I guess it won't be long til Puff Daddy, Notorious BIG, Ice T or Tag Team are spun. lol

Well, I really enjoy hearing "Hotel California", "I Can't Tell You Why" and many other Eagles music. They are definitely a talented bunch. Great stuff!! Enjoy!

So for several months KRTH played Hotel California three or four times a day, every day. For the three and a half days of the "Totally '80s" weekend---and really, isn't Saturday the only day that can be considered as the end of the week?---KRTH didn't play Hotel California at all. That makes sense---the song is from 1977. But I wonder if any listeners complained that KRTH didn't play it for three and a half days. Probably not. Maybe listeners don't want to hear it as often as KRTH thinks they do.

I think you guys are WAY overthinking this, putting far more attention on this one song than any normal listener. It's just one song. One very popular song that is very appropriate for a station with this format in this particular town. But I doubt anyone even thinks about it to the degree any of you do.

As I've said many times, radio stations are more than just the songs they play. People tune in for the presentation, for the mood that's set, for the memories, for the experience. NOT to harp on what they do or don't hear. It's the whole package. And it obviously works.

I think they overthink everything so much that their posts now seem to be little more than trolls.

BigA, you say that a station's success depends not only on the music played but on presentation, mood and memories. I maintain that if people don't like the music being played, those other things won't matter---people won't be listening. I further maintain that a song played four times a day, every day, is not going to bring back any memories---unless the listener thinks, "Wow, that song brings back memories of three hours ago, the last time I heard it." Hearing a song 1500 times a year is not going to create any memories.

Since KRTH dropped most of the 1960s hits and shrunk the playlist down to a measly 300 songs, I've seldom listened. I do check the playlists on the KRTH website and I know that Hotel California is played has replaced Brown Eyed Girl as KRTH's most over-played burned-out song. Hotel California is also the song that many of us complain about the most. It is the shining example of the station's mind-numbing repetition.

This morning at 9:50, I turned on the radio. *Click* I heard Another One Bites The Dust. Okay. Then I heard Little Red Corvette. Okay. Then I heard the first few notes of Hotel California.

*Click*

Seems like every time I just sample KRTH, I hear Always Something There To Remind Me. When that happens I am Reminded of the ridiculous repetition of stations like this.

As to Kimberleigh's remarks about trolls, I don't see it and who cares besides the Corporate Apologists and Rationalists what Kimberleigh's opinion is anyway?

The KRTH playlist is actually around 400 songs.

If you do the math, the average listener spends just about 2hours a week with KRTH. Let's suppose we consider those who listen around 3 hours to be the ones who contribute the most listening. So if a song plays 4 times a day, that's 28 times a week. The average listener is likely to hear the song once every two weeks, give or take. It's pure math.

The real issue is that the average heavier listener is only going to hear about 35 songs on KRTH each week of listening. If you run a station, you want those 35 to be the best possible songs... not a bunch of secondary ones that are not favorites to the majority of listeners.

The music, yes. One song, no. They listen because KRTH is the only place that combines the music they love with the overall presentation they remember. You're picking on one very popular song by one of the most popular groups in music history because it gets played several times a day in their home city. It's being overly picky, and does not reflect the way the majority of people listen to the radio.

So you hardly listen, and all you really do is check the playlists so you can complain on this message board. No other reason. Right? Why should anyone pay attention to what you have to say?

I agree with the concept of playing one's favorite songs but must take issue with the idea that any of these songs bring back memories. If I hear a song once a month, that I've been hearing on and off for 40 years or so, I may still like it but I don't think about the first time I heard it anymore. Actually, I can only think of one song that has held up, no matter how many times I've heard it, for nearly 50 years and that's "Help Me Rhonda". That one, I could listen to four times a day!

Only problem with the overplayed "Hotel California" is that it is over six minutes long. the former burnout king "Brown eyed Girl" was about half that length.

I rarely listen, even though I can easily tune in the station on my Internet radio. I'm glad Jim Carson and Charlie Tuna are still there, but after trying to listen for more than a half hour the music is a big tune out for me. Of course, being 65, I still prefer the 60's,the music of my teen years. I still can't consider the harder songs of the 70s, like Kansas,Boston,Bad Company and Kiss as oldies, but I know 'I'm in the minority To me oldies will always be pop hits from 1955 through 1974.

I get my oldies fix on various Internet stations. Can't argue with success. Late 70's and 80's music with a tight playlist has worked wonders for KRTH,WCBS and WOGL. It's just not my cup of tea anymore, but being ten years removed from the demo, I hardly matter.
