Propagation Conditions

There is some pretty amazing reception on VHF going on the last few days. The FM band is fully loaded, and unless something major has changed, the NOAA Weather Radio outlet in Syracuse on 162.55Mhz is coming in almost as strong as the Rochester transmitter. It's the first time I've ever heard it so strong.

Yup - a combination of some nice tropospheric enhancement that's been bringing Syracuse in nicely (I watched the channel 3 news almost local-like tonight from Brighton) and some E-skip Saturday and Sunday that was bringing in Nebraska, Oklahoma and other points west and south.

And now (1:50 AM) channel 13's off the air, so I'm swinging the antenna up north and catching CHEX on channel 12 from Peterborough...

Where is Channel 61?

This morning between 6:00 a.m. and 6:20 a.m., I was getting a Spanish language broadcast on Channel 61.
Also zooming in and out was Channel 67 - no not from Springville - but Cleveland; as was WSEE Channel 35. Channel 12 was a choice for me CFCF from Montreal, CHEX from Peterborough, or Channel 12 from Cleveland...

Maybe I should visit the city again; after 30 plus years.

That was probably WQHS from Cleveland, the Univision affiliate in that market. They have a 2000 kW signal from a tall (1200+ ft. HAAT) antenna.

Probably WOAC in Canton, Ohio (although that's a pretty good pickup since it's directional and has a substantial null to the east).

That Channel 12 station you got was probably WICU from Erie, PA, an NBC affiliate. Again, a good catch once you get east of Buffalo even though they're pumping out 316 kW from a tall tower.
Never seen CFCF in these parts, although CHEX is always available in Western NY if you have a good antenna you can point north.

WOAC/Canton

If he saw home shopping, it was WOAC. The station is now owned by the Shop at Home folks, and since I believe Scripps bought them recently, they're technically a sister station to Scripps-Howard's WEWS/5 (ABC) Cleveland! But they do not operate together at all, as far as I know.

WOAC bumped up its power in the past few years, and they're much more powerful than when they were a Canton-targeting independent station (complete with local news with Scott Davis). WOAC first started up to fill the void left by the move of WJAN/17 Canton to religion...the station now known as WDLI is a TBN O&O.

And to show you how much further the food chain serving Canton with a TV station has fallen...that role is now filled by LPTVer WIVM-LP/52, which shows up on the Canton Time Warner Cable lineup on digital channel 585 (!!!!).
