Protest to bring back K-Rock this Saturday

nd2023

*takes dance hat off, puts alt rock hat on*
Yours truly is helping to organize a protest on the streets of Times Square to help bring K-Rock back, even though I actually like 92.3 Now better than Z100. Hey, it worked for CBS-FM. When Now FM fails, hopefully they will see how much support people have for K-Rock. There are already about 150 people confirmed to attend. It starts at Broadway and 44th street, and proceeds up to the 92.3 studio.

92.3 plays what we want NOW! Regardless of whether we like the tunes! ;D They will force feed us the best
of today's top 40! Over and over again! Until we can't stand the repitition are forced to tune in to Z100 for all of ten seconds.

Let the protest begin! Remember together we stand divided we fall! There shall be strength in numbers. Just ask Rev. Al Sharpy. That's the method he used to get Imus fired. ;D ::)

Let's protest to bring Johny Carson back to the Tonight Show while we're at it....

How about asking NBC management why they hired a guy with an annoying lisp who hasn't had a genuinely funny monologue since May 1992??????? Not to mention his
nauseating voice. When you are done digging up Johnny C, call NBC and ask to speak
with the head of entertainment. ;D

ROTFLMAO! That's a good one! ;D

Don't get me wrong, I am always one for doing whatever it takes to get radio corporations to listen up. However it is going to take MORE than 150 people holding up signs and marching to the radio station studios to make noise. It's also a matter of getting to advertisers (which is exactly what the CBS-FM protesters did) and reaching out to the press on a non-confrontational level.

Also, one has to show some sort of justification if going back to K-Rock makes financial sense, and it's too early to indicate that sort of thing with NOW just being launched, not being officially rated yet to compare with what K-Rock ratings had been prior to the flip. Just to protest saying "we want K-Rock" for the sake of saying it won't help. The reason why Jack went back to CBS-FM was simple.....the format wasn't working and the same people that tuned in to CBS-FM weren't touching this station.

I wish everyone the best of luck. :) Just realize, these things aren't an easy battle....trust me on that! ;)

Actually, I thought most rock fans in the NYC metro area were relieved by the demise of K-Rock because of how utterly bland it sounded. I was certainly irked by the loss of G-Rock in Jersey (even though I live on Long Island), and even lamented the loss of Y-100 in Philly, but frankly I didn't really give much of a damn over the loss of K-Rock.

I think it was David Eduardo that said that both Jack and CBS-FM have the same rating in the coveted under 45 demographic, so I'm not so sure that the revival of CBS-FM has been such a resounding success.

Totally agree...Didn't bat an eye when KROCK went...haven't listened much since Howard..(never ever listened to Free FM on 92.3) GROCK....pissed me off majorly....I'm from Jersey....but nowhere near Monmouth or Ocean county. made it a point to listen as soon as I was in range. 92.3 is actually good now for that type of music if you enjoy top 40.

K-ROCK was far too bland in its later days, but WRXP is a total trainwreck- playing old pop-punk back to back with 60s folk-rock with some Journey and Pete Yorn thrown in for good measure.

I know Matt Pinfield released a statement urging K-ROCK listeners to come to 'RXP, but K-ROCK did on occasion play some harder stuff (Metallica, Rage Against the Machine) that 'RXP doesn't touch so I believe that many K-ROCK listeners would be alienated to hear some softer rock, be it the Goo Goo Dolls or Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

lol this is great which K-Rock are we talking about getting back? The pre "great rock period" K-Rock? The 1996 modern rock flip? or the recent bland safe rock trash? I'm for the first two. But even if K-Rock was to come back, which it won't, they definitely should make it an intensive active rocker like it used to be. From many of the posts I was reading in the past, I actually thought they would have made that slight format adjustment to a heavier rotation of modern rock, but instead they went top 40. I doubt this protest will do anything.

Not a good time to do a protest, when there will be nobody there. Best bet is to schedule on Mon-Fri when there is somebody around to see it and it might be worth it. If YOU believe in it, take off from work or use your day off and DO IT!!!! MAKE IT COUNT!!!!

I think the reason why many are unhappy with the demise of K-Rock is more symbolic than anything else, and it has more to do with the fact that it was the rock torchbearer in NYC for so many years. The way it sounded in recent years, however ... it was basically another Q, which rendered it completely irrelevant. CBS just doesn't know how to program good rock stations, as further indicated by WYSP in Philadelphia, a dull Classic Rocker that bills itself as "The Rock You Grew Up With". They don't seem to understand that this stagnant, bland direction is not what their target audience is seeking.

G Rock, on the other hand, was something to be upset about. After years of tinkering with the format and having a serious identity crisis over whether they wanted to be Alternative Rock, Mainstream Rock or a Hot AC, the owners finally made a smart move by bringing Terrie Carr on board. Under her direction, the station finally sounded focused ... with a good mix of new music, familiar songs and surprise titles thrown in, and a plethora of special shows and interactive features. The owners dropped the ball by not promoting the new and improved station at all, and management fired several popular personalities over the last couple of years ... in January, G Rock was dropped for a generic Top 40 format with a terrible morning show, and to make matters worse, the CEO refused to own up to his company's mistakes, instead making a claim that listeners were reluctant to fill out ratings surveys.

WRXP tries to be all things to all people and thus far seems to be almost nothing to almost no one. But I'll give it this much: I like the fact that the station allows its personalities to speak, in an age where too many stations are taking an iPod approach. It's also unpredictable musically, and provides far more surprises than your typical generic Clear Channel "modern rock" station. Someone in NYC is finally playing The Smiths, The Pixies and The Replacements, among other acts. And even though it's on a station that plays such dullards as Boston and Van Halen, we'll take it. In NYC, where radio has always been pretty timid, progress comes in baby steps.

Isn't the new 106 "Jersey's hit music channel" completely automated? Is the morning drive local, or a syndicated hack?

I should just come there with a sign that would allow special Authority from the FCC to allow The Rock 106.9 WCCC on Translater W276AV here in Stamford CT... I am still hearing WRXP on that 103.1 instead...

It started off completely automated, and does run jockless on overnights and weekends (adding to speculation that this move was just as much about Press Communications slashing their budget as it was a new format). But they have brought back Matt Knight and Scott Lowe (both had experience with CHRs in the past) to work similar time slots to the ones they had with G Rock.

The morning show continues the male host/female host format that has always been employed by Press on WHTG. Matt Murray was fired (it may have had something to do with his jokes about BENNIES and guidos, since that is the audience they're targeting now), Erin Vogt now reports the news, and the new show is hosted by "Pork Roll" and "Eggs" (the names are both a desperate attempt to pander to the local audience by referring to a popular Jersey Shore breakfast, as well as a not-so-clever double entendre. The humor is sub-Nickelodeon juvenilia, pretty much all the discussion is celebrity gossip rubbish, the hosts' laughter at their own jokes is beyond irritating ... the only thing hilarious about this show is how abysmal it is.

The other fairly recent addition to report (and tell me this isn't an attempt to win over BENNIES/guidos) is the Hit Mix At 5, where they bring in DJs to do dance mix shows for the commute. This will definitely get Joey Guido psyched for the weekend as he drives down to the Shore in his Camaro or IROC, checking his hair in the mirror every minute or two, while he thinks about how he's going to party in the club all night and hook up with every chick in the joint. During the summer, you could always hear the 7 Minds song "Seaside Tony" on Fridays at 5 PM, a song that pokes fun at these people. Now they're celebrating the people they used to mock. I hate to break it to Press, but I think the people they are so desperate to reach now are going to stick with their beloved Z-100, WKTU or 92.3 Now - they all come in crystal clear at most Shore points.

So, basically, if you're a CHR/Rhythmic fan you now have 4 options but if you're an alternative/active rock fan you have 0 in NJ these days?

Exactly, you hit the nail on the head. You have 1 semi-decent one, 101.9, and 1 that has a lot of static in K-Rock and G-Rock territory, 104.5. Plus some shows on college stations but they're not consistent. For the Pop fans, there's 87.7, 92.3, 95.5, 100.3, 103.5. 106.3. Even though I'm a CHR/Rhythmic fan, I am organizing this protest because alternative rock needs a place on the radio, and we need to show that there are hundreds of people who would spend a Saturday in New York City who want K-Rock back.

K-Rock, unlike G-Rock and Y-100, wasn't even an Alt-Rock station, so I still don't see the point of your protest. It might make more sense to protest outside of 'RXP since they don't seem to care that most of their listeners, if message boards are a reliable indicator, want them to drop the boomer dinosaur rock that comprises way too much of their sound.
