PROTESTERS GATHER TO SUPPORT RICK ROBERTS- FIRED FROM WYAK

Must have been a real slow news day in Myrtle Beach.

That said, Joey Dee has the gig now - let's see if he still has some game after being out of the biz for 2-3 years.

I saw the article in All Access about this and it is true that ALL of the Cumulus stations were off the air over the summer for a good amount of time and when they came back they were operating with very limited resources. I bet everyone in that cluster will be fired soon enough.

All of the Cumulus stations were struck by lightning four times over the summer, but that was prior to the Fall 2006 ratings period. The truth is, K Country's poor ratings had nothing to do with the lightning and everything to do with the man that used to be in charge. Laziness, selfishness and radio ignorance are only a few of his faults. Firing Rick Roberts was the smartest thing Cumulus Broadcasting ever did.

It sound like you did not like Rick Roberts. I have only heard him on the air a couple times on vacation, Rick was a ok jock but not the best. I think you can not hear any Cumulus stations that well in Myrtle Beach.

Moving on What happened to Cumulus Production Director - Bob?

Cmon, sniping Rick? Guy just lost his job!

Truth is- if Rick's to blame for the failing ratings of WYAK, then he's also to blame for the book when they beat Gator 107.9 a couple of books before. 25kW WYAK beating 100kW Gator when K-Country doesn't even have a signal in Georgetown. He was the PD then too.

Blaming a PD for ratings is leaving a lot of responsible people out- good or bad.

When I worked with him, he was always the first one in town to do a free remote for a family raising money for a loved one's operation, would perform all day events to benefit many other causes, was involved with every concert in the Carolinas and was basically a one man show with a few part-timers.

Not understanding the perspectives of people who may have had a bad experience with him, I would think that Cumulus would have done better to research the actual problem instead of burning Rick. Like who's picking the music, how prepped John Boy & Billy were throughout the book, whether assembling a fulltime airstaff might actually benefit the station and how bout some ads? Maybe promoting the station would help. Burning Rick was probably not done as a result of a sane person actually thinking he was solely responsible for the low ratings. There were probably other reasons.

Georgetown is a big part of the ratings. Gator has a great signal there- WYAK has a very minimal one. Why didn't the true achitects of the station come up with a more effective scenario. Like one where WYAK is simulcasted on their 93.7 class A licensed to Gtown? All it does now is eat up the power bill as a part of "The Team" trimulcast- duplicating the signal of WIQB. Putting a signal into Georgetown for WYAK might be a terrific way to get ratings there.

Life goes on and Rick will land on his feet. Those who wish him bad things will find joy in other pursuits and WYAK, if the present course is maintained, will still have low ratings.

Find out the problem and solve it. Treat the disease- not the symptom. Simple enough. Firing Rick was probably not an effective way of doing that.

But what the hell do I know?

Isn't WYAK's tower close to Georgetown? This station was the first to do a simulcast, on 94.9 (Loris). I heard a rumor they were on 100.3 (a Cumulus station) at one point, but that's still CHR.

WYAK's tower is in Carolina Forest north of 501.

Moved there when they upgraded from 6kw to 25kw. Neither WSEA 100.3 or WYAK have much of a signal... especially in Georgetown.

Okay, that explains why they didn't need to simulcast any more.

When did WSEA move north? It was once licensed to Pawleys Island, which makes no sense seeing as how WDAI was already licensed to that community. I probably should start a new thread for them because I have other questions.

When I started at Cumulus-Myrtle Beach, He was the first to talk to me about employment there and everything. Rick is an awesome guy, and I hate that this happend. He always went to bat for everyone there, and I do in fact remember K-Country's day when they beat Gator in the books. So Yeah I agree with you, Treat The Disease- Not The Symptom.

I have a feeling this was a bad idea of canning him. And Tricasting 93.7 with the 93.9 station seemed like a good idea at the time.. ::)

Just my humble opinion.

And how long have you known Rick Roberts?
Laziness? Before there was a full-time position for Middays, Rick was the ONLY full-timer for KCountry 103. When there was a problem, Rick was there. When there was a station event, Rick was there. When something extra needed to be done for the station, Rick did it, because there was no one else. For many years Rick didn't have a staff...HE was KCountry 103.
Selfishness? How about spending your own money to pay for a newly hired personality to move to Myrtle Beach because Cumulus was too cheap to? Rick is the most UNselfish person...[EDIT]The way I see it, Rick Roberts is much better off without Cumulus. He worked way too hard for the way in which he was treated. And they can blame it on ratings all they want, but good luck trying to find someone who will put in the time and energy to make that station win this next book.

And so what if there was a small group of protestors...how many people ever protested for you, purplehooter?

I'm not starting trouble, I'm just sayin'.

[EDIT-ad hominem attack]
