Providence Bishop Installation coverage

This past Tuesday, WPRI and WJAR aired live coverage of the Installation of the new Bishop for the Providence Diocese. WLNE did not provide any live coverage of the event. Also, it was not shown on the Rhode Island News Channel. I was surprised that not all three stations aired the event live. I enjoyed watching both station's live coverage...both stations did a fine job.

Also, I thought it was a disgrace that the funeral for Providence Police Det. Sgt. James Allen was not aired on Channel 6, but it was aired on RINC...shutting out Channel 6 viewers in Massachusetts from watching the funeral services. Even though it was a funeral for a Providence police officer, perhaps people in Massachusetts would have been interested in watching. If they did, they were forced to watch either WPRI or WJAR...same situation for the Bishop's installation this week.

Both events were very important to the area. I feel honoring a deceased law enforcment offical and honoring the new leader of the Catholic church in Providence was worthy of wall-to-wall coverage by all three Providence stations.

Does anyone care to share their opinions on these topics, if you have one?

Well, you DID ask.

What's the point in all three stations carrying the same
program at the same time?

Does nobody care that viewers have a choice? Does somebody
feel they have the authority to dictate that all eyes be
glued to the same spectacle?

How many Jews, Protestants, Muslims, Atheists, Agnostics,
Hindi, Buddists and Satanists would be totally disenfranchised
if every station carried the new bishop event?

What would be fair and balanced would be for all stations in
the market, not just the VHF's, to pool money and/or resources
with ONE to drop their regular programming and do a great
job of coverage. The others could all run a crawl inviting
those who were interested to change to Channel XX for the
event. They could rotate the carriage station to station so
that no one station would suffer the loss of it's regular
audience. Or, maybe, one station so low rated that it wouldn't
mind and might, for a price, to the duty of all of them.

Probably would constitute an illegal conspiracy and I can just
see the pure at heart...or at least those who haven't been
caught yet...leading the protest and bringing the class-action
suit.

Who IS this man and why has he been nominated to become the patron saint of radio?

The Boston Globe published a picture of the new Bishop laying one on another priest. I understand the Bishop has put in a request to be transferred to Massachusetts. The two are listed at The Plennary Barn, Shrove Cross & Pew, and Crate and Bible also at PT O'Brien's Clerical Kitch and Cassocks...

Let's face it. ABC6 is third for a very good reason. They don't have any money. WPRI's motto is "coverage You Can Count On". ABC6's motto should be. "Coverage that you are lucky to even Get!". They are less local then any other station because they have an empty wallet. For the longest time they didn't even have Noon News. They were busy airing Tattletales!

I know ABC6 is trying, but they can only do so much. If a major player ever buys that place then perhaps things may change a little. But it's a damn tough situation to turn around when just about every Rhode Islander was brought up watching Channels 10 and 12. That habit is now ingrained in all our brains and all of our families too. It's going to take something extremely drastic to shock people around here into change. Stripper Weather girls or some other contraversial method may work. But other than that it's going to take a hell of a battle for anything at WLNE to change for the better.

Yeah, that's one good reason. The other is history. When
the call letters were changed from WTEV to WLNE, not much
else really changed. Pulitzer had the money to change it
but wouldn't. Subsequent owners had the same attitude
until it hit the mode of "don't have the money and, even
if we did, wouldn't know what to do with it".

At least in the old days (when I was there for about 9-years)
it was so blatantly bad that people, especially a collegiate
"cult" audience watched just for amusement. For those
who have no appreciation of how bad: http://menujoy.com/wtev/

Being in Massachusetts, I had known that WJAR-10 and WPRI-12 had carried coverage of the installation service of the new Bishop of Providence, but WLNE-6 didn't.

I was, however, stunned that the Rhode Island News Channel didn't air live coverage. I fully expected RINC to have broadcast the service live.

At least a couple of Big success stories came out that place. Vin DiBona and
Merideth Viera. I'm really surprised that they've had that many. The rest are local yocals.

Merideth was after my time there but Vin DiBona appears to
have acquired his sense of humor through dealing with the
madness during his time as a director at 6. Some think
MV became a success DESPITE her time at 6; those who
really know understand that V DiB made it BECAUSE of his
time there. My cynicism is not from birth; it dates to
my first few months under the watchful gaze of "Mr.
Steadfast". See the website linked in my post above to
find out who THAT was if you don't already know. He's on
one of the first couple of pages......
______________
