Providence Catches The O&A Virus

FROM ALLACCESS.com:

The virus spreads to PROVIDENCE as OPIE AND ANTHONY get cleared on CITADEL Sports WSKO-A-F (99.7 FM AND 790 AM THE SCORE), starting THURSDAY (7/13). O&A (and JIM NORTON) will also be included on the SCORE's Internet stream in the coming weeks.

CITADEL/PROVIDENCE GM BARBARA HAYNES says that O&A "will offer a unique entertainment option for Adults 18-49 in PROVIDENCE, and is a great compliment to the sports talk audience." Morning team ANDY GRESH and SCOTT ZOLAK shoft to 9a-Noon replacing JOHN "COACH" COLLETTO.

Well the radio world knows about it but RI listeners don't know Opie & Anthony from Opie & Aunt Bea. Are they going to promote it? I don't mean spots on PRO-FM which are as effective as spots on WARV. Is it cost cutting or an actual programming move? Why not billboards? Maybe one around the Foxey Lady? Maybe one on 95 across from Clear Channel Curve? Ads in The Phoenix? Anything done to ballyhoo this beforehand? Where is the potential audience going to come from? Imus? Paul & Al? Certainly not Gio & Kim. There'll be some word of mouth I'm sure but I'd really like to see some aggressive promoting in this market regardless of whether I agree with a programming decision or not.

Coach was apparently offered a lesser position with the station & declined it. He went out with style & professionalism & they knew he would or he wouldn't have been allowed to say all his goodbyes today. He won't be out of the limelight long.

Well my theory is that Opie & Anthony will grabs Sterns former Audience from Hot 106. Many people followed Stern to Sirius.....but most did not. Those are the ones that will now find there way to Opie and Anthony.

O&A is a great thing for Providence. This will probably save the Score from a format flip. O&A will be a problem for EEI, BRU and HJY. This should be interesting!

That's two fond farewell shows in less than a year at Citadel. First Gary DeGraide & now Coach Colletto. They're nice send-offs but sooner or later audiences are going to start to wonder. Ironically this time it was made public that he was let go as opposed to DeGraide's exit being portrayed as his decision. Come to think of it I guess this is Coach's decision since he was offered something else.

It's getting to the point where the best radio career path in Providence radio is board-op.

As far as any effect on HJY this could eventually move up the timetable to put Quinn and Cantara on mornings. As it is now O&A vs P&A=sex in church vs Tom Brokaw imitations and recycled bits

Interesting point and.u.r. Though I don't think HJY would ditch Paul and Al to bring Quinn and Canterra to mornings. The main reason being that Q&C are just a bad version of Opie and Anthony. Though anything is possible.

I'm sad to see Andy and Scott moved. They were a nice alternative to the virulent homophobia and far-right blather of Dennis & Callahan.

I tuned in yesterday to hear them. They sound so angry!!! I could only listen for a few minutes and flipped back to 108, even with the static you can't beat Matty.

I haven't listened to O&A much. I'm a Stern fan. But I can tell you that Matty from Kiss108 is the best local talent around. The guy is legitimately funny in a clean family sort of way. It's not easy to be both funny and have a clean show, but somehow Matty pulls it off. I used to always listen to Matty before Stern came to town. He's a very entertaining guy.

Yes being entertaining without being vulgar is a rare thing these days.

People claim how innovative Stern was in radio. I think anyone who enterains being vulgar lacks creativity. Doing it clean is much more of a challenge.

Actually I agree with you there. I'm not offended by the vulgarity but have always felt that given free reign it's easy to be funny. Take that free reign away & you have the other 90% of the people in radio.

O&A has always been a poor man's Stern ... which unfortunately will translate well to the bozos in Pawtucket.

I love little Rhody ... worked there for many years ... but you know exactly what I mean.

Don't forget the last syndicated morning show on 99.7... Mancow. Remember how long that lasted? Neither do I.

If you want to hear a good talk show, get Sirius and listen to Howard Stern. O&A are proven rip offs.

Thats right. I'll pay to listen to a show that pushes all the envelopes except for Friday's and whenever he wants to take 2-3 weeks off. Don't get me wrong he is good at what he does but O&A have to be creative to push then envelope and try to come up with new ways to push the envelope.

Well as far as paying for Stern goes, there are ways to listen to him absolutely free. You can download the shows from Newsgroups (and) a couple guys actually stream the program LIVE from secret locations.

But people are right. O & A are rip off artists. They got into radio because of Stern and now they just bash him. That's not cool at all. I'll take Stern any day of the week. I'll only listen to O & A in the car where I don't have access to Stern yet.
