WOW... The Today Show crushes WNAC's Rhode Show. Not even sure how the Rhode Show stays on the air with low ratings like that. They may be up 80 percent, but a low rating is still a low rating. WJAR also still beats WPRI in every single Newscast. WPRI is down more than twice the percentage at 5PM than WJAR is down. That's interesting since both leads ins are still the same. Still Oprah and Judge Judy. It's been the same for years. So WPRI can't really lay blame there. These ratings show that WPRI has made some progress, but it also shows that they need to figure out a way to make more progress. Both WJAR and WPRI Newscasts have grown stale. I think WPRI picking up some new viewers probably has more to do with people just getting sick of WJAR. Both stations honestly need to make a change if they don't want to lose viewers. I have recently started to watch WLNE more and more because at least they look fresh. It looks like others are doing the same thing. WLNE gained the most viewers at 11. They got killed at 6 PM though. Very interesting. It looks like people might not like the 6PM anchors so much.

If I worked at WPRI or WJAR I would start making some cosmetic changes to freshen things up. Change the music for starters. Every music package contains about 100 different variations. Start mixing some new music cues in so that at least it sounds like somebody is trying to improve something. WJAR's closing theme sounds like it's on a 10 second loop that just keeps repeating. Horrible. WPRI's isn't much better. For some odd reason both stations think the cabinet is a better place for all the unused music. They should try using some of it for a change. Then make some set changes. if you don't have the cash for a new set, how about you move some stuff around? Configure it differently. Instead of a blue background, do something with lighting and make it red. Just change SOMETHING please. WLNE might have the smallest studio, but they sure do their best to make it look good. No complaints there. WJAR and WPRI should do the same. Nothing has changed for years and years at channel 10 and channel 12. At least I switch the furniture around in my house every so often so things don't get boring. Geeez.

I wonder how FOX 64 is doing with their News at 10. I sure wish they would try to seperate themselves from WPRI's newscast and have their own identity. They use the exact same studio, music, etc. It's just a clone and I personally don't like it. It's a different station and I would really like to see them try to at least make the newscast look different too.

I think that WPRIs studio looks good as is (they just refreshed it in 2008), and I like the synergy between WPRI and WNAC. Also, the WNAC 10PM news is the #1 rated. And WLNE's 6 PM and 11 PM anchors are the same.

I wonder why WLNE's ratings are so improved at 11 then. Bad lead in at 5? Oh well. WLNE has always suffered around here because old habits never die. If you could instantly replace every resident here with all new people from out of town I bet that WLNE would have great ratings. Their product seems just as good as the competition. My parents always had WPRI on in the house. I've always been more of a WJAR person. WPRI's presentation is to in your face for my taste. I watch all the stations and I find that I enjoy WPRI the least these days. They were at their high point 15 years ago when owned by CBS. That is when I thought they were awesome. They made changes after that which I did not like.

Oh, so you're one of THOSE people! :D

Seriously, though, tv habits die hard in Rhode Island! Nothing seems to change much around thiere...

Even with WLNE-DT being on equal footing now in the digital age, they may never shake that New Bedford stigma. Damn! :(

You would think that as the older generations pass away, the younger people wouldn't even know about the "New Bedford" stigma. The primary newsroom has been located in Downtown Providence for THIRTY years now. ???

I don't think it has anything to do with New Bedford anymore. Now kids are just watching the TV station that their parents always had on in the house.

For legal reasons, is WLNE still licensed to New Bedford, MA? Here in Hartford/New Haven, WTXX-DT (CW) channel 20 is still licensed to Waterbury, CT. however, they're operated from The Hartford Courant newspaper building on Broad Street in Hartford and their transmitter is in Farmington, CT. (The old analog channel 20 transmitter was in the Prospect, CT area and was very visible from I-84 through Waterbury.)

Yes WLNE has never applied to change their city of license. There is no reason to. They still can put Providence in the legal ID, as long as it's after New Bedford.

And formeraa is right, like most New England TV markets, the kids who do watch TV news, watch what their parents watch. )(Although I am willing to bet more kids get their news online now a days rather than on TV.)

Certainly, times have changed. Thirty years ago, you had to read the newspaper and watch television news to be informed. During the 80's, Nightline was almost required viewing for college students. Most college students didn't have access to cable at the time. So, if anything major happened, everybody piled in front of the TV set to watch Nightline.
