Maybe ensured was the wrong word, but if you developed your skills and "paid your dues" as mark puts it, then usually you were rewarded with a good paying job, and some sense of value by your boss.
Now you are told you don't mean anything to the listener, and if you want to do a shift it pays 10 bucks an hour part time, and a full time shift will pay almost well enough to live week to week, but chances are you will only work a year or so before being tossed out with the weekly trash..... Great motivator huh
 
Radio isn't what it used to be. Circus clowns get paid more. I quit my first real radio job when I saw that Burger King down the road paid $1 more per hour. true story. I didn't go work for Burger King. But the moral of the story is that I would have made more money if I had.
