Providence now Market #39

Well, we just aren't trying hard enough because in the recent reshuffling of the Arbitron markets for the Fall book, (my best Casey Kasem impression) Down a notch to #39 is the Providence-Warwick-Pawtucket market.
I can remember being market #32 back in my day (the late 80's-early 90's.

My advice, stop posting on the board, go out and have more babies! (Ha!)

It's going to keep going down.Especialy with all the taxes and 50 cent tax that just went into effect.People are moving out and down south.

route 95 in South County will be a 4 lane highway going SOUTH only because of the flood of people moving out of state. While The new I-way will have a loading dock with an on ramp for illegals to drive thier cars directly into South Providence from whereever they came from.

THREE conventions in one week.

American Airchex was a monthly trade-publication-on-cassette, a pretty cool idea in its day. In 1975 either Providence or WPRO was profiled (PD Jay Clark assigned me to produce the Salty/Larry/Jimmy/Gary/HC/Cherub montage, which is still floating around on the Internet). At the time, the market was #29.

Good morning from Charlotte, and the NAB Radio Show and R&R Convention.
Bigger crowd, busier exhibit hall than last year.
Mixed vibe.
MANY lobsters met-their-maker last night at The Palm.
Consultant blackmail video of clients-in-bibs forthcoming.

Yesterday, at a radio convention, I did a session on podcasting.
Today, I fly to California to do a radio session at a podcasting convention.

The notion of "market rank" can seem less relevant when smart broadcasters -- and NON-BROADCASTERS -- can now have a presence on a World-Wide Web that WiMax puts in-car and iPhone puts in-your-pocket.

What we are doing, right here on this web site, is an example of user-created content, moderated in a branded fashion, and no longer "the future." It's the now. Rambling hosts talking about themselves and the-same-predictable/arcane-topics day-after-day-after-day is CLEARLY "the past."

And in a nutshell there you have what's happening in radio. The public isn't impressed anymore because they can do it all themselves.Reality TV and these talent shows have shown that the public wants its day in the sun.Journalists resent bloggers.Would-be authors can now write and create websites for their work.Everybody has a myspace account.Youtube has created stars.People download what they want.Radio in some markets like Providence continues to slog along knowing the end is coming but not doing anything about it.Radio itself isn't ending but the people in it are in denial about their own future.I believe stations targeting older demos stand a better chance of surviving in their current states but those demos aren't what stations want so my answer to radio is tuff nutz. You don't know how to serve the demos you want and you don't want the demos that are easier to serve. And in the middle of it all there's some voicetracked from out of town goon saying "There's Rod Stewart. Now Rod Stewart used to be married to.."WHO CARES?
