Providence radio always gets the shaft

So why does Providence radio always seem to get the shaft? I mean, for being market #36, I feel like I'm listening to stations that would be considered "OK" in market #136. Let's start with the HD radio thing. Whether or not you like the idea of HD radio and that the technology is there to broadcast multiple stations on one frequency, Providence is way behind other similar markets. As far as I know, B101 is the only station broadcasting in HD, and they're not even broadcasting another station on its HD-2 frequency. When are the other Providence stations going to pick up the HD technology, and get to listen to alternate formats on the HD-2 signals?

While we're on B101, why, in market #36, do we have a voicetracked jock? This is in no way intended to knock down Ed McMann as he is only doing his job, but come on! For being one of the top rated stations in the market (miraculously), couldn't we get someone live in the midday slot? What if some breaking news or weather alerts occurs? The six point-whatever 12+ share that's listening to B101 at the time isn't going to hear about it unless somebody actually stops Ed McMann's show to announce any details. And I don't have much faith in Clear Channel doing such a thing, they'd probably just quickly cut a sweeper that says "for more information on (blank), tune to 920 WHJJ," which will end up being some talk show off the bird anyway.

And all the sports-talk? As much as I love sports-talk, something's got to go, and it ain't WEEI either. I'd love to see the WSKO-AM/FM combo get sold to Entercom, put WEEI on those stations then put a music format (classic rock?) back onto 103.7. WEEI in RI also has to do something better about their local coverage.

The Quinn and Cantara simulcast is another sticking point. It's great that they've made it to being simulcast on 3 different stations, however HJY is sacrificing it's localism at night. That, and it seems that all of HJY's weekend shifts are voicetracked, which really drives me nuts. I haven't heard any all-request weekends, or very many weekend giveaways or on-air contests for that matter. That and the songs fade out way too early on their automation system. I forget the last time I rocked out to the outro on AC/DC's "Back In Black" while listening to HJY... must be because they cut it off! Boy, I'm full of rage.

At least one station, Cat Country 98.1, really cares about being local and live. I forgive them for not implementing HD yet, since they are owned by a much smaller company. They really care about the Rhode Island listener... even though their transmitter is in New Bedford, Massachusetts. At least someone cares about us!

How many people do you know who own HD radio receivers? If a tree falls in the woods...

And Cat Country was live during last week's blizzard! They really have become the only RI station I can say I listen to in spite of all the presets. Part of that is format since with the exception of country which occupies about 75% of my listening time, the rest is triple A or that cool place on the Cape. The other part of it is the general atmosphere of WCTK is to talk to the listener but still sound exciting like radio did when I was getting interested in it. The music is what I want to hear. The staff is the best around. The arbitronk bodonkadonk I completed earlier this month will say it all for me.

What do You mean?Do You want a local sports flash guy reporting on local sports news during the flash or do You want more talk during shifts about URI & PC basketball? The local sports flash guy might be of some merit, but any R.I.sports talk would turn off almost all Boston based listeners,You will have to stick with WSKO for that stuff.

It's not as bad as you think.
Middays is one of the lowest rated periods during the day, and you could do MUCH worse than Ed McMann.

Same thing about WEEI FM. I'd consider it an honeor to have Boston radio stations simulcast out where I live. That's Lubbock Texas, Market 189 or 190, or 200 or whatever smaller they claim we are today.

And whenever you want to, you can flip to WBZ, WJMN or WBMX, which are supposed to get a bit of coverage in RI, are they not?
