Providence radio in the 1950

I am newly registered and found the site because Google took me to it when I typed in the name of my old friend Jim Mendes. I read comments made immediately after his death in 2006. I knew Jim very well, and will cite his kind, gentle nature in the book I am currently writing. I lived in Providence and cooked many a (large) meal for Jim, Sherm and my then husband Charlie Jefferds in our home near Brown U. My own aspirations took me to New York and a career as a singer, but I flirted with the idea of being a full-time dj when I subbed for my friend Ron Della Chiesa on WGBH-FM in the late 1980's. Also hosted "The Jazz Matinee" at WICN-FM in Worcester, MA, all of it great fun.

I'm sorry if I have over-extended my introduction to subscribers. But I'd be interested to communicate with any other members who were fans of Mendes and Carl Henry during the 1950's when I lived in Rhode Island.

Hi Carol....

I worked with Jim at WJAR radio and tv in the 1960's during the summers. I was a regular fan of his Sunday Morning show on WICE in the 50's and he listened to my show on WADK in the 2000's . We wrote, talked and visited. off and on. A great guy he was , and a giant in jazz. As a youngster, I followed the careers of Jim, and Sherm and Carl and Charlie. It was Charlie who advised me about Armed Forces Radio when I left college. We chatted when he was at WHIM.

And vicariously, I followed your climb from when I was on the board at WWRI in West Warwick in 1958 when you broadcast from the RAILROAD INN. I met you again at the Newport Jazz Festival when you opened for RAy Charles. We did an interview on WOTB-fm. Played your cuts on WADK program Sunday mornings.
Glad you've reconnected.

Much of this is before my time, but just wanted to say how nice it is for both of you to share some memories. Bob, I'm sure you have a lot of radio memories that would be more interesting than much of what we read here and Carol, you didn't over-extend any introduction. In fact, I just listened to you on youtube and am glad I discovered you now. Thanks to both of you.

Hey Carol....an after thought: we produce a cable program called JAZZ BASH. You'd make a great guest! No performing: just talk. Interested? Ole Jazzman is host.
