The trend continues. Previously, public radio podcasts encouraged listeners to "subscribe in iTunes." Now NPR, PRI, APM, the CBC, WNYC Studios have developed their own apps and are pushing those apps in their podcasts. PRX is now getting on the train.
Why? Maybe monkey-see, monkey-do. Somebody else did an app and now everybody else wants one. Maybe they think they can lock in listeners. Either way, it seems a dumb idea. These apps give existing podcast customers no reason to switch from a dedicated podcast client - most of which are better designed and offer a better set of features. Plus why would a listener want to be locked in? (Does this mean podcasts will not be allowed to cross-promote other podcasts from other producers, as they do now?)
Maybe radio geeks just don't get new media technology and realize the world has changed and listeners are in control.
