PSU for Virginia Tech

I am sure by now, we are all too well aware of the terrible tragedy that took place at Viginia Tech this week. Serving as a double-whammy comes news that we lost one of our own, a Bellefonte native (and former PSU graduate) on that day.

As a means of showing support and sympathy for all the victims and families, some very well meaning PSU Students have proposed wearing the Virginia tech colors to the Blue/White Game this weekend as a sign of solidarity. Its a small symbol, but one with so much thought.

The concept is gaining momentum and it was spotlighted in today's CDT as well. When something like this happens, you sit in front of the TV wacthing and you want to do SOMETHING...but you have no idea what. I applaud these students for their effort to make a difference in some small way.

I have incorperated their pleas to diss the Blue and White in Favor of the Maroon and Orange in my airshifts and I ask that you all band together to do the same. The human emotion and the simple act of offering compassion transcends all formats and all squabbles any of us have ever had.

When you crack the mic over the next few days, please take a small stand to show we care and toss your support for these guys and girls who simply want to show we care. Talk it up and help them make this a success!

Thanks

we all got the email not just you......and we all have hearts not just you......the rest of us just don't feel the need to remind everyone to be human, we know that they are.........no need to pat yourself on the back for informing the masses.......they already knew!

This isn't about a pat on the back. its about doing SOMETHING! Even a small token gesture. Many may know of this effort...many more do not and as broadcasters, this is our chance to help make a difference. If you don't wanna crack the mic and get people fired up for this effort, okie dokie but please don't slam those of us who do. I think this is an area where radio has lost its true direction. We no longer feel the need to "inform" or to get involved in the community. We just wanna shut up and play the music and sell as much ad time as we can. If your theory holds true, why do we talk about "Penn State Game Day" on the air? Don't they already know there is a game? Why do we feel the need to tell them? But strangely enough, we do.

If you ask those who know me best, you would know the size of my heart. On 9-11, I sat in front of the tube watching the horror feeling totally helpless and I wanted to do something...anything, but nothing came to mind. For these people who are organizing this effort, this is their chance to do something and if I fail to get involved and ask people to "join in", then I am missing my chance to do something too.

When are you guys gonna learn its not about slams....or one station vs. another and all that childish stuff we see on this board post after post after post. Sometimes people just want to be people. For once, can we try not to be insulting or rude and just reach out to people who feel they need us now.

APPARENTLY YOU HAVE NOT LISTENED TO ANY OF THE OTHER STATIONS BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALL BEEN TALKING ABOUT.........NO ONE NEEDS FOR YOU TO LEAD THE CHARGE....MOST OF THE STATIONS HAVE TAKEN CHARGE ALL ON THEIR OWN AND HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS TRAGEDY, THEY DON'T NEED YOU OR ANYONE ELSE URGING THEM TO DO SO......THEY HAVE DONE IT ON THEIR OWN IN THEIR OWN WAY

WITHOUT PRODING FROM YOU!

LISTEN TO SOME OTHER STATIONS INSTEAD YOUR OWN VOICE FOR ONCE!!!

Ren, go have your faithful sidekick Stimpy make you some decaf and chill out. Then go count his Magic Nose Goblins or something.

What did Steve do wrong here? Not EVERYONE got the message. Steve's just trying to pass along the message and just making a suggestion. What's the harm in that?

Yap, yap, yap.....but does he really need to ramble on so much? Answer every single post that challenges what he says? Oy!

Anyway, the idea is a nice one. I'm curious, how does the FOOTBALL TEAM feel about the idea? It would be a nice gesture if they suggested it first. However, I didn't get the email so I don't know how the football team feels. I also haven't heard about it on the radio. Anyone know which students came up with the idea?

I can just see it now. Go to your own Blue-White game wearing the colors of another team. It's a terrible and tragic thing that has happened but Penn State must continue to go on. Changing a few of the colors in your clothing is not all that helpful. I don't anticipate anyone from VT expressing how touched they were because people didn't wear blue and white.

I don't know who "we all" is, but I didn't hear a thing about this until I read Steve's post.

Lighten up, Ren. Wouldn't want you to have a massive stroke.

Thanks guys. There was an email sent out from the organizers, but apparently not everyone got it. The concept was talked about by Adam Smeltz in the CDT today as well

And for the record, I do listen to other stations as well and so far, I have heard very little of this mentioned (go ahead....jab away)

I think its a great idea and I applaud these guys for thinking of it whether it succeeds or not.

For once I am with Steve on something...I didn't get the email personally but we received it in our PSA email...I think it is a great idea and i doubt the football team would have a problem supporting their fellow students from another school it is a tragedy that has touched the entire nation, and for someone to say who cares like Ren implied just shows me personally how much of a bigot you are...I knew the man shot from Bellefonte he graduated with my sister, I think that you need to see the bigger picture...PSU students want to honor the innocent lives taken by a sick man and I applaud their efforts...Hell Ryan Seacrest dedicated Tuesday Night's American Idol to the victims and their families, should he applaud himself for the ratings boost?

Steve, I just found out on another board that we're "brothers from another mother" because I agree with you on this topic.

Just curious, how is mom doing these days?

Mom is well! On this board, I could use a few more brothers to help me out. Seems no matter what I say, someone has to jump in and try and bash the heck outta me.

I have actually started posting on another "community minded" forum where the people are a tad more friendlier and you can have some honest open minded intelligent discussions and for the most part even if you disagree, you can agree to disagree and move on with it. Not sure why we radio folk have to act like a bunch of kids tossing sand around the sandbox...but to each his own.

If people have not figured out by now...love me...hate me or could care less, I am at the very least passionate about what I do and I have no intentions on going anyplace anytime soon :)

I think I know where the ranting Ren is coming from.
What Ren is reacting too is the sanctimonious me-too-ism that accompanies these national tragedies. Ren knows that compassion is not something sincerely felt by most of the grandstanding phonies that come out of the woodwork when these things happen. The "look at me, I'm doing good" routine witnessed during Katrina etc. is just one nauseating example.
"Don't let the right hand know what the left is doing" is good advice.
Let's face it -- wearing a team's colors is more an insulting empty gesture.
Want to mourn? really? cancel the game.
