Pt2: Jamn vs. Hot vs.. Hot 106.3 Providence

<font color=3333ff>I'm assuming that there isn't much difference between the markets. But as I said in my below post, that I'd check out Hot 106 all day today.

I can get Hot 106 in Brockton, but by the time I reach Braintree, the signal is over and Oldies took charge.....too bad.

I must say that Hot 106 sounds pretty much like a normal station! I've heard the usual music on Hot.... not too much old school at all and alot of currents, but not as repetitive as Jamn or Hot.

I've heard everything from Bow Wow & Ciara, to Ying Yang to Jeezy (And then What) and Three Six Mafia (Stay Fly). I haven't heard Ying Yang on Jamn, I've heard too much of Jeezy feat. Akon, but no And Then What. And I haven't heard Stay Fly either.

Jamn is completely out of the loop. Radio One's Hot is the better station for the market, but they lack signal very badly. Jamn has high ratings simply by default, since they got the big signal.

Too bad for the market......that's why most of the folks I talk to say they have CD's.

Well for starters Ying Yang BLOW, but that is a matter of taste, taste is subjective. So much of the hip hop that is being pushed on this format now is garbage all of the "bling bling" clowns (Ying Yang, Li'l Jon, Cash money (all of emm) twista, it's all just such sh*T!. Of course Hot is playing all of that, Hoty is mostly a kiddie station anyway becuase Pro is a rock leaning chr to flank those who dont want to hear hip hop. Hot is aimed at 15 year olds like it or not it's true becuase they are the ones buying THAT bunch of hip schlock Jesus dude you dont even listenb to GOOD hip hop, Young Jeezy?.in a word: WHACK! Although Li'l Jon is an entertaining presence in videos and on other shows where he just screams and is Li'l John, but he's the weakest rapper to come along in years.

<font color=3333ff>I'm grown. You've probably never been to the South. 15 year olds are not in the clubs. Grown folks are. Grown folks love Southern Hip Hop as well. You'd be surprised at who does these days.

The South has been hot for a long time, but have just begun getting airplay in the last few years in the North and East.

While I have always loved Southern Hip Hop (Old School Outkast 1994, Goodie Mobb, Ghetto Mafia, to new school Ying Yang, Jeezy, and JB to name some), I also enjoy East (and West Coast) Hip Hop as well (Jadakiss, DipSet, Nas.) I also love my old school east, west, midwest, whatever. It alwasy depends on my mood. Need I make a list?

Eric B. Rakim
Black Moon
Gangstarr
Boss
Mobb Deep
Nas
2Pac
Conscious Daughters
Common
Do or Die
Crucial Conflict
Kurupt
Dogg Pound
Method Man
WuTang
TI
Ludacris
Murphy Lee
Queen Latifah
Goodie Mobb
Ghetto Mafia

The list can go on and on. And that's not even calling out R&B either. Jamn' doesn't even seem to play R&B. Maybe 2 tracks?

Well, let's put Crunk aside then. Being East Coast, I would have figured then to hear some NEW Jadakiss, Nas, Camron, Common, DipSet all in regular rotation. Where is it? It's not on Jamn! It's such a shame to see a major player in the market ignore so much music. There is more to music than Akon and Sean Paul. How many times do we have to hear those 2 songs?

I think it's a dis service to the city that they omit so much and play too much Old music that EVERYONE already knows. I believe in bringing the new music to the people. Artists want their music played, so people go out and buy it. But if a station doesn't break new music, who is gonna listen? And then they find other means to find out whats fresh......meaning NOT LISTENING to your station.

<font color=3333ff>Wow, smoke a blunt.... you seem so uptight about it... am I dissing your station?

I KNOW that Boston aint the South, but neither is Detroit and they play current music. Detroit also plays crunk. Same with Hot 106. And as a matter of fact, most stations across the country too!

Well, you call Hot 106 a kiddie station? Well, then something's wrong when a "kiddie station" sounds fresher than the "not-so kiddie station Jamn".

Not uptight Im just showing you that your arguments are rooted in nothing but your own taste. Dont get all defensive after you made such blanket statements, and you cant say "I KNOW THAT BOSTON AINT THE SOUTH" You're the one that brought up what gets played in the clubs in the south to begin with, and that is no offense one of the dumbest arguments you could have made kid. You have no clue about what works where and why, no clue about why certain stations do certain things, you're just upset that you're not hearing Young Jeezy. If you think the Kiddie station sounds fresher than Jamn that is fine but when you compare ratings, revenue and how those two things translate into what people in each station get PAID, well it's good to be a grown up!.

Should also be pointed out that on several occasions over the past couple years, Jam'n has beat Hot 106 in the 12+ ratings in Hot's own market, Providence!!!

TJ, Wizard is right. You're confusing your own tastes with programming a radio station to appeal to the masses and make money. Cadillac wouldn't still have the same job after over a decade if he weren't doing it well. Jam'n works in Boston, VERY WELL, and as the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, then don't fix it!"

TJ, I know you're very passionate about this music, but like Wizard I don't see Ditry South/Crunk in the same class as East/West Coast Hip Hop. Sure there are exceptions like Outkast, or certain records like "Stay Fly" by Three 6 Mafia, but in general to me Ditry South sounds like 1st grade Hip Hop whilst East Coast Hip Hop sounds like College/PHD Hip Hop.
Miami Bass/Booty music, which was a guilty pleasure of mine in the early 90s, was pretty much looked down upon in the same way as Crunk is today.

That is true I did not want to bring up the fact that Tony Bristol doesnt really know what he's doing as far as hip hop is concerned, if he did he would not be getting beaten in Providence by the slow, and lathargic, non current hip hop station from Boston!. I also respect TJ's obvious passion for the music he loves that's why most of us got into radio in teh first place. He's also largely full of sh*t though because but you also cannot be so rigid as to think that becuase you like a particular thing or style, that everyone else obviously feels the same, or would feel the same way as you do. Such people usually dont even represent the opinions of many others at all. You have to kind of get over yourself and see the forest for the trees.

Re: CHRles, I'm not just talkin about crunk, I'm just saying CURRENT music period

<font color=3333ff>I appreciate your backup and clarification. : )

If you hear how bad it was out here, you'd say whats going on too! I've never heard such old music and minimal new school being rotated ever.

Jamn is really passing up many currents and spinning too much old school. They are on top by default, because it would be a good race if WBOT had a signal. WBOT's signal is really really bad.

And how much "Crunk" is BOT playing? not that much, again if hot is so great why are they getting beaten in PROVIDENCE by Kamn?. Face it kid you're just wrong, period. Face it your taste and opinion are not as obviously in line with what "everybody likes" as much as you want to think. The whole I like it so everyone else does too attitude is a little tiresome especially when it's obviously incorrect like in this case.

Wiz. Im starting to think that you work for Jamn, you are taking big offense

<font color=3333ff>First, I aint got no attitude towards you. You seem to be all defensive. I'm having a calm relaxed topic, showing that across the country most stations do not omit currents like Jamn does.

You started blasting me so quickly. Second, you're really wrong when you 1) call me "kid" 2) saying that I'm basing everything on my personal choices and "if I like it, everyone should" 3) think that all I like is Crunk

I'm here right now. This is why I'm talking about all three stations. I can tune all three right now and I've been checking them out all week. My personal opinion plays only a small part, I compare markets that I've been to... not just radio, but people and relations, etc. I know that this is a conservative market.

I believe in current music radio, especially with a genre that has plenty of current and future songs to choose from. To have a powerhouse station, and to sleep on currents as much as Jamn does, I think is doing a dis service to the market. I'm all about New music. I believe in bringing the music to the people.

So, where's the R&B currents on Jamn then? Hot plays more R&B than Janm.....

If Jamn is leaving such a big hole in the Boston market by not playing enough currents, why hasn't another local signal gone up against them? Jamn gets very good ratings, why wouldn't another station try and take them on for a chunk of their share by playing all of this music Jamn supposedly forgets?

The truth is, Jamn has a stranglehold on the market. Cadillac Jack knows what he is doing, Jamn is a heritage station and the playlist appeals to a lot of people in Boston. They have their audience and are serving it well. So, they may skip a couple of obscure songs they think their audience wouldn't like to get a couple more Arbitron points, that's radio.

Re: Wiz. Im starting to think that you work for Jamn, you are taking big offense

Again, you guys keep confusing your personal tastes with what is good programming for the Boston market place. You state so yourself that you "believe in current music radio." There are so many factors at work that influence Cadillac's programming decisions. Jam'n fits well into the Boston market. If someone were to really take on Jam'n and try to compete with them, you can bet that Cadillac would step up and make whatever changes are necessary to compete effectively and win. In the current state of the Boston radio market, Jam'n is the right fit and the ratings prove it. Do you really think that Cadillac programs Jam'n with his head up his ass? I highly doubt that. I'm sure his wise programming decisions are backed up with plenty of research. And if he were to program Hot 97 in NYC, he would not program it necessarily the same way he programs Jam'n. He would program Hot to win in NYC. He's a winner and his record shows that VERY CLEARLY.

You can't just come in and start questioning a radio station's credibility in its market place when there is clear proof that it is achieving its goals by serving its listeners and advertisers. Jam'n just doesn't fit your musical tastes very well. That doesn't make it a bad station. It's just not the type of hip hop station that you prefer. That also doesn't invalidate your musical tastes either. I think we all appreciate each other's love of music, whatever type of music that may be. I personally hate the music played on WBCN and WZLX, but that doesn't make either one of those stations bad stations. It's just my personal taste in music.

I have traveled around a lot and listened to many different hip hop/R&B/CHR-urban stations. There are many stations that I like in other parts of the country that program differently than Jam'n and play more or less of different types of hip hop. I also like Hot 97 in NYC, WPGC in DC, WJLB in Detroit. They're all good stations. But just because Jam'n doesn't sound like them, doesn't mean that Jam'n is a bad station.

Also, keep in mind, that at heart, Jam'n is an urban CHR...it is not a full-fledged urban or R&B/hip hop station. It uses CHR formatics to appeal to mostly a white suburban audience. That is their target demo and they serve it well.

Bottom line: Wizard knows what he's talking about. You are blinded by your personal tastes and seem to lack a full understanding of exactly how radio programming works.
