PTC: NBC Should Let Affils Vet 'Carmichael Show'

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/ne...-should-let-affils-vet-carmichael-show/166415

The Parents Television Council wants NBC to rate an upcoming episode of The Carmichael Show for adults and give its affiliates a chance to review the episode to see if it is appropriate for their viewers and advertisers.

At issue is reports that the show plans to include unbleeped uses of the n-word.

PTC says its understanding from online reports is that the episode will air June 21. The show airs at 8 p.m. in the central and mountain time zones.

"In light of the firestorm brought on by Bill Maher’s recent use of the word on HBO, we want to send an advisory message to parents that the ‘N-word’ will air at a time and place where children are likely to be watching,” said PTC president Tim Winter, himself a former exec with NBC. Maher has apologized for his use of the word.

PTC recognizes Jerrod Carmichael has tackled hot-button issues and cites a Los Angeles Times story saying he plans to use the word in "an adult" manner, but PTC says its parental advisory to parents and potential advertisers about the show is justified as is an adult rating if the word is going to be used in an "adult" manner.

Of those hot-button issues, Common Sense Media, which provides family-oriented reviews for TV fare whose partners include Comcast/NBCU, said they have included "the Trayvon Martin shooting, standoffs between protestors and police, and allegations of racial profiling," raising "some serious topics you should consider talking about with your teens if they tune in," it says in reviewing the show as appropriate for 12-plus.

NBC declined to comment on whether it would give affils a chance to pre-screen the show or what its rating will be.

The show this season has been rated both TV14DL and TVPGDL. According to the ratings website, TV14DL means the program "contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age. Parents are strongly urged to exercise greater care in monitoring this program and are cautioned against letting children under the age of 14 watch unattended," specifically "intensely suggestive dialogue (D) [and] strong coarse language (L)."

Really I think the show should be uncensored but at the same time I doubt NBC will waste their time having affiliates vet the content though especially when NBC can air the "uncensored" version of the Carmichael show via NBC Website/app on demand.

the PTC is trying their best to not look like racist, but they are really being racist about it since the topic of said episode is about the N word and if a TV show with a all black cast wants to say the N word uncensored on network TV, then let them.

when Bill Maher said the N word last week on HBO, he had an uncensored platform (a premium cable network) and not to mention he did it in a joking manner but it still is wrong.

the Carmichael Show is on NBC and is a comedy about a black man and his family, and they address black issues on that show.

i think the PTC should stay out of this. they are making themselves look racist going after a show with a all black cast

if i'm NBC, i'll go ahead and show this with the N word uncensored to express their freedoms of speech.

by the way, i don't think the N word is a word that's considered a word that would get a FCC fine like the F word, S word, A-Hole, both C words that describes genitals, both the P word (in some cases) and the PR word that rhymes with Rick, the D word, or any other cuss word mentioned in the 7 dirty words bit by the late great George Carlin (may he rest in peace).

by the way, PTC would shut up if i was them, since they are a right wing conservation organization who would had supported President Trump, a man who said "grab them by the P****" and have used foul language in the past.

TTBOMK, affiliates of networks can choose not to air shows for content reasons. Affiliates can also choose to bleep a word if they choose.

The PTC is wrong like always the censorship org. I doubt no NBC station isn't going to air Carmichael Show just because of the N word and can't think the last time a TV station hasn't aired a network show other than NBC station in Sault Lake City Utah. The last time The PTC did a stunt like this was 09 when they made a big deal about a Gossip Girl EP demanding that CW stations not air EP because of a threesome which wasn't a big deal by the way and an epic fail which really wasn't a threesome. The PTC had egg on there face after that but never admitted they were wrong The P in The PTC stands for prude.

The PTC is stuck in the 1990's. People can bypass their NBC affiliates and see the uncensored version for themselves via apps that NBC own anyways. Also reruns of the show can air on Hulu too.

Fixed. :D

They want nothing less than the return of the 1950s, when almost all faces on TV were white, and the only blacks were "safe" artists like Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, and Sammy Davis Jr..

About "free speech"....one can get in trouble in other ways with that. In my hometown we had a Baptist preacher who for years had his own radio show. One Sunday back in 2004 he decided to slam the idea of gay marriage on his show. In the broadcast he named the morning guy of a competing radio station a "quee*" which also was in the title of a then popular cable show on Showtime. Anyway the preacher was sued but he claimed "free speech". Didn't work judgement for the morning guy. In the end the preacher and wife had to end up filing for bankruptcy all because of that judgement. Oh he cancelled his radio show soon after.

About the "n" word you are right that it's a word that wouldn't get a fine but for NBC I think it's best to move on and not use that word. In today's "can't offend anyone" world that word and the like only causes problems. The PTC should just put a sock in it.

I don't get the hubbub. I just, last week, saw an old episode of All In The Family where George Jefferson flat out said "******", and that was the early 70's! People need to get over the use of the word and concentrate on the meaning/use of it. Just like Bill Maher wasn't being malicious in his use, and "George" being colloquial in his, I think the Carmichael Show will probably just use it in passing and not as a slur.

Back then, it wasn't treated like a swear word. Even in the 80s, when I was a kid, while probably impolite to use it wasn't treated like a swear word. Now, it has been elevated up to the F word level in how it is treated. Maybe even worse.

A few months I saw an old SNL replay with Richard Pryor. Multiple N-words. Didn't I see that as part of an SNL anniversary celebration on NBC? I only have an antenna so I didn't see it on cable.

don't forget, Dave Chappelle used the N word on SNL too when he was the host the night he was on last November.

I think the issue is who is allowed to use the word. My Jewish friends always tell me they are allowed to make fun of themselves. But they don't appreciate it when someone on the outside uses the same language. That's the case with Chappelle, Pryor, and a lot of rap stars who also use the word a lot.

I wonder what the affiliates will replace the show with, infomercials?

Well the NBC O&O's will air The Carmichael show uncensored.

Remember back in 2004 ABC Primetime there was a controversy involving "Saving Private Ryan" for Veterans Day. This was when the Disney O&O's like KGO, KABC,WABC aired the movie uncensored but ABC Affiliates not owned by Disney boycotted the movie for some reason.

I think This time NBC O&O's will air the Carmichael Show uncensored but the rest of the nation will have go to the NBC app to see the episode.

NBC was also the network of record when these aired in the mid-70s...

And don't forget the Petula Clark - Harry Belafonte incident. They were singing a duet, and Petula touched Harry on the arm - affiliates in the South, and some others - went ape-s**t.

Really - given that Carmichael is African-American, I'm sure he thinks there is value in using the N word on that particular episode. If so, and if Standards and Practices at NBC approves it, PTC should stay out of it. In this day and age, any child with a smart phone and half a brain can access videos of ISIS beheadings, hardcore kinky porn, and much more. To think that their minds will be twisted by this is just silly, IMO. And it gives parents an opportunity to watch with their kids, and discuss how to deal with a sensitive issue. That's a good thing.

I did see that in recent years, but I'm not sure where. Chevy Chase was doing word association and Pryor was supposed to say the first thing that came into his mind. Pryor had just said a word that rhymes with Donkey. Case said the N-word and Pryor got angry and said, "Dead (rhymes with donkey)".

On the subject of "safe" blacks, I'm hearing Ray Charles right now on the "radio". Wouldn't he count?
