PTC vs. "$#*! My Dad Says": Round 2

The new William Shatner series "$#*! My Dad Says" has recently drawn the ire of the Parents Television Council, despite CBS insisting that the show itself is not indecent.

Now, with the sitcom set to debut this week, the PTC is now taking their fight to a local level, shifting their campaign to "grassroots activists" which plan to "take their concerns directly to their hometown CBS affiliates and each affiliate's local advertisers."

C(BS) is 0-3 in my book. They label two new shows with the same names as iconic shows from their past (The Defenders and Hawaii 5-0) playing tie-ins for all they are worth then along comes this show with it's offensive title.

Is C(BS) the new Fox?

Anyone ever heard the saying "You can't judge a book by its cover"?? How about watching the show first BEFORE making a conclusion about it. Then we all can say if it sucks or not.

Just my opinion

CBS won't cave to those blowhards. The show will be canceled due to low ratings.

Thats the funny thing. Because of these blowhards, MORE people will watch it. If people wanted "family friendly" Pax would have been successful.

Maybe instead of wasting time on dumb stuff like this, the PTC should support "Wholesome Family Entertainment". And if your so worried about it, DONT WATCH IT! That's what is so great about living in a free country. And don't give me that crap about how you don't want your kids to see it. If you don't want them to see it, assure they don't watch it by taking responsibility for your own damn children. That's how it worked when I grew up. My parents didn't want me watching "Roseanne", so they only had one TV in the house, and they made sure to check in on us kids. Today it's even easier with parental controls. Lets stop making this a country for 5 year olds.

Considering the relative success of Fox when viewed over the long term, there are worse things to be than the new Fox if one wants to be a business success.

Oh the great horrors, though, for daring to try to make their product successful. :D

Indeed, if there were a large enough audience for a return to Walton Mountain, we'd be seeing Jon Boy, the Next Generation by now.

Even if Shatner's show is cancelled, the guy can go back doing what he does best. I am referring to the number of interview shows he's had on cable television.

Actually Shatner is very good in that format. I would have recommended him as a replacement for Larry King.

You may have planted an idea in some executive's head. John Boy as a moonshiner running a kiddie porn web site off of Walton mountain.

This reminds me of all the uproar over "Soap" back in the '70s, with churches protesting ABC affliates about airing "Soap" weeks before the shopw ever debuted. I even heard a minister stating that "Soap" was banned in Mexico because it was so FLITHY and VILE two or three weeks before it was ever shown on ABC. Yet, when you actually saw the show, it was MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Just wait until the show actually airs before you start protesting it.

This sort of thing in the past has happened in radio too. Back in the early 90's despite being a small rural Virginia market we had a jock come to our town from the "MAJOR" market of DENVER !! Gawd the rumors !! Such as the jock in question will be doing drugs on the air, as one local mayor at the time had said in our local paper "...well he is from the mile HIGH city !!" Other "stories" going around the community at the time included that he would be using the "f" word quite often on the air, have sex and slaughtering animals live on the air...name it people were talking that he will be doing such stuff on the air...and all of this before his plane had even touched down !!

Well once he had went on the air as it turned out...well it wasn't much to talk about but those rumors did give the station its first ( and only ) good book.

Why don't these groups ever realize that when they protest these shows, they just bring them added publicity - and therefore, more people watch?

I'm old enough (though just barely) to remember that "racy" novels (containing sexual acts or naughty words) would brag in advertisements that they were "Banned in Boston." . Publishing companies actually wore their Boston censorship as a badge of honor, and a selling tool. The last book to be banned in Boston was reportedly Naked Lunch in 1965. After that, the Supreme Court put an end to this kind of censorship. I wouldn't be surprised if the publishing companies cried a few tears. For whatever sales they lost in Boston, they gained ten-fold in the rest of the country through prurient curiosity.

The PTC's actions will probably get more viewers to tune in $#%!, my Dad Says than otherwise would have bothered to check it out.

A question - is the PTC objecting to the actual content of the show, or just objecting because the title contains a censored swear word?

My money is that their shorts are in the bunch because of the title -- the series itself has no language like that in its dialogue.

Chances are they have not seen the series -- or read the book it's based on (though I won't be surprised if they try to get THAT banned as well).

I didn't critique the show, just the title.
