Public Radio holiday format question

Public radio stations: Did you have live local hosts for Morning Edition and All Things Considered on Christmas? Or just let the network run? This question is for those who did not have sever weather in the area, in which case, presumably, you had a live host to provide weather coverage.

We don't run ME and ATC anymore at our station but when we were, as in the case of the present, we ran a mixture of one hour Christmas specials and programmed music. However, if we did have a severe weather situation, our local news staff is always prepared to come in to give live updates in conjunction with one of our local T.V. stations.

KUHF FM Houston has live programming 24-7, even on holidays and that includes Christmas and New Year's. We're a little different from most university-owned stations, in that the university allows us to program to the general public, and doesn't insist that we focus on the school.

There are no students and volunteers at KUHF. We have a full time paid staff of experienced classical music announcers and news reporters who go out and cover local news. Many of our reporters and anchors have many years of commercial radio experience in their resumes.

Back to your question, Christmas and New Year's are no different from any other day for us. We have live local newscasts, traffic, weather and underwriting announcements inside ME and ATC.

I worked Christmas morning. One of the other news reporters is doing the local anchoring today. The full-time ME host will be back on the job tomorrow morning.

Happy New Year !!

Same deal at WXXI in Rochester. I worked Morning Edition on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Our local talk show (noon-2) is replaced by holiday specials, and our FM (all-classical) runs a whole bunch of holiday specials as well, but there were live bodies in the studio on Christmas and there are again today. (Not me this time, though!)

When I worked early mornings at WXXI I used to volunteer to work holidays in order for others to enjoy the day off. However when I was moved to afternoons I still had to work holidays. In fact it was next to impossible for me to get most holidays off period. Things have sure changed at that place.

At WILL-AM Urbana, IL we take Christmas, New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day off. The board operator does weather breaks, but that's it. The reason is that I believe listeners are more
forgiving of short-staffing on holidays as opposed to regular days people would have to take off to make up
for working days when the University of Illinois is closed.
