Pugs and (no) Kelly

A fellow Facebooker posted this:

"ATTN Pugs and Kelly fans, Pugs annouced on that starting Monday Feb 22, he will be broadcasting his mid-morning show weekdays 10AM-12PM on CNN 1190 AM in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. If you are on Twitter, you can follow him at www.twitter.com/PugsPandK."

He also said that Kelly's in Corpus Christi now, and won't be part of this.

I would assume Pugs is paying for his own time (or the "Bless Your Little Heart" guy is) as there are similar arrangements already in place on 1190. (Jack E. Jett was going to be one himself.) Isn't it strange that CC is enjoying a decent side business schlepping out time during the week on a station they never even wanted? And costs them nearly nothing to run? And was farmed out to First Broadcasting for years just to get it out of their hair? (and to quietly offer it for sale?) Is 'time' on a decent DFW stick actually a commodity now? Who'da thought we'd ever see that again.

(Sorry if any of this is old news...haven't perused the entire board yet)

No, it's pretty much current info AFAIK. It does answer one of my recent musings ("What does this station want to be?"). Apparently, this is their destiny.

This could be interesting. Pugs with no Kelly sound infinitely more promising than Pugs AND Kelly. Plus I hear tale that BDH will be joining him as well. Also good since I never could take BDH except when he and Pugs where on at the same time. Huh, never really thought of Pugs as a personality I like, but hard to explain it otherwise given my last two statements...who knew? :'(

I thought BDH had some kind of major sindication deal. So why she piddleing around on AM with Pugs? Or did that whole thing fall through. Either way I still wont listen.

And I don't know if this is true, so put it in the urban legend category until someone can remember dates and pull some numbers, but I was told once by a Cumulus employee that the Ticket's nighttime numbers went UP when BDH was let go and replaced with best-of's, Dan patrick, etc...

At least he's on in the daytime. If he was on the nighttime pattern, you might hear him - depending on what street block you're on.

I see there's a lot of hate for BDH on the board, but for me, his show was interesting and listenable and usually reeled me in. Then again, I'm no fan of political talk and hate talk and polarizing talk, so BDH was a breath of fresh air for me--and that's me, who seldom EVER listens to talk radio of any kind. He would also poke fun at modern pop culture, which is right down my alley.

Perhaps in the right format, BDH could do better. Rational wants him to interject politics into his show, and his original show was basically guy talk/pop culture...so there's one issue right there. If we still had an alternative talk station here, and BDH was scheduled weekdays (instead of only Sunday nights, as he was at KYNG/KLLI,) he might actually find a following. Then it'd be easier to shop the show around to other markets.

Is it hate, or is it just a realistic analysis of Hunter's talent?
(and for the record, i don't hate BDH. I've known of him since he was in Killbilly)

but for me, his show was interesting and listenable and usually reeled me in
.Oh, so you're the listener they had... ;D

And how many of "you" do you think their are out there? As someone said on another thread, the people that let their personal taste influence how they think stations should be programmed are a joke...Add up teh ratings for WBAP, KLIF, Ksky, etc and then compare them to 1360. Who wins. Oh, that's right 1360 doesn't get ratings. At all.

And maybe he will never find a following. He's had the advantage of working on stations thatwere rated very highly (at the time). Both Ticket and 105.3. Maybe he does have talent. Or maybe he got really lucky to be following the Hardline, and to be on 105.3 after that.

I tried BDH a few times because some trendy folks I know kept recommending him. Every time I tuned in, it was either stripper talk or heavy metal talk. As I am neither a 14 year old boy anymore nor am I a degenerate with Peter Pan syndrome, I concluded that BDH ain't for me.

Ok, here goes...I personally like BDH and I marvel at his rolodex. The guy's interview skills are pretty awesome and he seems to be able to get just about anyone on his show. What I think is holding him back is the fact that he doesn't surround himself with true professionals. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but that producer is just not up to par. I can tell he's a friend of BDH's, but he just ain't cuttin' it for me. Annoys me, in fact. BDH is a great broadcaster, odd dude, but great broadcaster and I'd like to see him quit selling himself short.

BDH is a self righteous know-it-all turd, but Pugs is a self deprecating know-it-all turd...maybe THAT's why it works for me. Of course i haven't listened to the latest incarnation yet, so I guess I'll wait and see. 8)

shows like this on stations like 1190 only serve a couple of purposes. 1. to trick a few advertisers into ignoring ratings because the personalities are supposedly more popular then arbitron on ppm can calculate. KLIF has been doing this for 16+ years and yet they are several rungs higher on the ladder then 1190. 2. just to broker enough extra income from wannabe radio stars who buy the time in 13 and 26 week bundles...couple that with dead inventory they sell off to the freecreditreport and the Ester C's of the world for pennies on a dollar...and I suppose maybe two or three legitimate accounts and a few remotes from the in house sales reps and that's enough to pay a PD, GM, a few board ops and keep the doors open somehow.
