Pulling off a 10PM News

I've always wondered what the deal is when an "established" station with a full slate of newscasts (5/6/11pm) has a deal to produce a 10pm newscast for another station in town, be it a Fox, UPN, WB (or CW/MyTV) or whatever.

No matter what market you're in (but please specify if you feel safe doing so), did they hire enough additional staff to do it right? Or was it more like everyone working the 11pm show got stuck doing double duty?

I'm just trying to envision how well a station can do with newscasts at 10 and 11, when it's usually the same reporters and often the same anchors. If it's also the same producers and other staff too, how much of a strain is it? Has it hindered your numbers at 11?

Would enjoy hearing the viewpoints of anyone involved: producers, reporters, anchors, shooters, production, anyone.

Well WROC CBS in Rochester runs a 10 PM newscast on WUHF FOX. They use the same people, but they did hire a new girl named Lia Lando, when they first started producing the newscast. I am sure it may be different in other cities. WROC-TV in Rochester is a very Cheap Station, and they cut corners and staff every week it seems like.

WROC uses the same talent and crew. The station promised more people and did not deliver. In fact, there are fewer people now than when the WUHF show launched.

Lia Lando is an embarrassment, by the way. A former soap opera actress reading the news, and at a 4th grade level.

OUCH! Even I'm not that brutal when it comes to comments. But you've come very close to my impression of that individual.

The station I work for in Providence produces a 10:00 newscast for the Fox affiliate. LIN Television owns WPRI Channel 12 (CBS), and operates WNAC Channel 64 (Fox) under an LMA. The newscasts on both stations are branded as "Eyewitness News." At 10:00, the news is called "Eyewitness News: First on Fox." At 11:00, the show is titled "Eyewitness News at Eleven." The same on-air staff is seen on both stations...with the newscasts using the same studio set...the same graphics, theme music, and so forth.

As much as it's a burden on the staff, it's a smart thing to do. Gets more recognition for the main brand and it's cheap to put on.
