Pulse 87 coming back

A band-aid on a gaping hole. Just another of maybe a thousand online internet webcasts.

Here is the difference.....

Yes, ANYONE can start up an online station. There are a couple within the dance music genre that are excellent with it. But yes there are MANY stations out there all vying for the piece of the pie.

The difference here with those stations and Pulse is one key factor. In NYC, Pulse is recognized as an "established brand". So when the announcement came out about it, the word spread like wildfire. Comparatively speaking, based on what I've heard on the Internet and on Pulse when they were terrestrial, there are many online stations that DO sound better. Yet Pulse has their "brand" and who knows, they may actually become the reason why more radio fans will go to the Internet and start purchasing smartphones once the "apps" become available.

We'll see.

I gotta do this......

I just got back from the bakery. Here's some "humble pie" ;)
And not for nothing, I think the country music fans WOULD be happen if 1050 WHN came back :)

Oh please. A web-cast? That doesn't count. Do you know how many zillions of webcasters are out there? What makes this one stand out?

Call me when the Pulse name and format appear on a real transmitter (AM or FM).

A webcast that builds upon an existing brand is going to have plenty of listeners at the onset.

Search for 'pulse 87' on Google. The first sponsored result you see is for ElectricFM.com. Their large audience almost doubled because of their advertising around Pulse's brand. Most of their listeners are from the New York City market.

How many listeners does CD-101.9 have now? Or any other format that has moved to an HD-2 or online stream?

I highly doubt the talent that was on Pulse would come back for a stream on a regular basis.

I just heard a sweeper just now... they said "Here new music on Pulse 87 now... here it later on... NOW?" (most likely a reference to 92.3 NOW). Even though they are just on the net, they still count as competition?

Some of the talent on Pulse has moved to online streams. Jewelz and Niko moved to Goom Radio, Ruby will soon be on another Internet dance station, Abel Sanchez is on Energy 98. Most of the mixshow DJs are on Party. Andre and Showboat are MCing at clubs.

There's a difference between CD 101.9 or K-Rock's listeners following them online and Pulse. There are numerous smooth jazz and rock stations still left, and they have a couple close replacements on the radio in NYC: WRXP, Q104, and WBGO. Pulse had no replacements besides Party, and even that had a different sound than Pulse. KTU is nowhere close to the sound of Pulse.

Even online, there is no stream that exactly matched Pulse 87, besides the Original Hot 97.

That sweeper referring to NOW was there back when it was on 87.7 FM. It's funny to hear those on the Internet version of Pulse, and I even caught the old legal ID "From the t-t-t-t-t-(SHUT! UP!)-top of That Big Blue Building In Queens"

PM me your number ;)

Now that they're on the web, I hope that means that they no longer feel pressure to "be a radio station." In other words, they get more strident in pushing dance music out there, including not relegating themselves to "pop remixes" but include some drum n' bass, indietronica, classic techno, 90's electronica, italo, etc..

Can you tune it in? Is it Pulse? If the answer to both of those is "yes", I'm sorry, but it counts.

If you *must* make it come out of a radio, get a C. Crane FM transmitter and plug it into your computer :)

There you have an example of the kind of denial that makes today's over-the-air radio vulnerable to Internet streams.

Many of us already own gear that makes Internet streams portable...new cars are being wi-fi equipped...yet the consolidating radio companies continue to cut costs, fire talent, bang 200 song playlists and 15+ minutes per hour of commercials, thinking that specialized Internet streams and other net-delivered audio content that appeals to consumers is but a minor annoyance and "the way we've always done it" is an effective plan for the future.

Eventually, having a "real transmitter (AM or FM)" will just mean that you have a higher electric bill than the webcaster on your block who's quite capable of attracting your listeners.

I'm an extremely dedicated Pulse listener who stumbled upon The Original Hot 97 online after Pulse went off the air.

Does anyone know any more concrete details about pulse87ny.com? I'm so thrilled that it's back up but the website wording is so vague as of now...

Did Pulse's PD buy the intellectual property rights from the former Mega Media group or is it a different entity using their old station ID's? I'm looking for some official announcement about the re-launching but other than lots of "coming soon" on the website and a Facebook page, I can't find any information.

Thanks!

The intellectual property rights were auctioned off last Thursday at the Mega Media Chapter 7 auction. It is programmed by Joel Salkowitz, the same person that programmed it on 87.7.
Mega Media no longer exists as a corporation.
From what I see on the website, the "official" launch is supposed to be March 1. It is going to be online-only.

Everything is still new at this point but there is a stream happening now if you click "Listen Live" (and I think it only works on Windows for now).

From what I understand, the intellectual property rights were sold at the Mega Media liquidation auction, which is how Pulse 87 can have the same "British Betty" sweepers. There are a couple of FB groups (official and unofficial) dedicated to the return of Pulse online. I do think for now it's just going to be music and sweepers though down the road, based on one of the mixshow DJ's comments, there will be the DJ mix shows.

It'll take time but things will happen accordingly :)

Like almost every other dance based internet station out there I'm sure that it will have mixshows. Even Joel's other internet station runs them.

It will be interesting to see if he keeps both still running, especially if they are running pretty much the same music, but with the different branding.

Here's the URL (link) to the audio from the www.Pulse87NY.com player (link to the player itself: http://www.pulse87ny.com/player/):

http://wms-11.streamsrus.com/pulse64k

If you open your own ("fresh") version of Windows Media Player & copy the above URL & paste it into the "File: Open URL:" field & click "OK", the audio stream should play. Then by clicking on the "enhancements" icon at the lower left corner of the player's screen, you can adjust/"beef up" the audio to your liking with the issued Player settings & with downloaded plug-ins.

So far, I haven't been able to get the stream to play in any other type player (may be a "windows media player only" type stream), but if anyone comes up with something, I'm sure they'll post it here.

Hey guys: I just tried their 128k stream and it works! Sounds awesome. Try it- http://wms-11.streamsrus.com/pulse128k Since they don't have a iphone app yet, I added to the pocket tunes app and it sounds great. Glad to have you back Pulse 87.

I have an iPod touch. How do I hear it?where is the pocket tunes app?

Well, if he still keeps the "Original Hot 97" brand, he can take off all of the currents that the station plays and keep it to that era ('86 - '92) to separate itself from Pulse.

I don't see that happening.

Pulse 87 isn't just a dance station, but a "brand" based on the music to the specific demos they were covering while on FM. In that sense if Pulse never played drum n' bass, electronica, old techno, etc. while on the FM, they're certainly never going to touch it on the Internet. Being the Internet you have TONS of stations out there that cover that ground. "DI" (Digitally Imported) stands out in that sense.

In that sense, Pulse's presence will succeed in terms of bringing dance fans (the casual and the core) to go over to Internet streams instead of depending on FM for their aural pleasure. Hopefully those fans will go around and discover the other offerings on the Net such as ElectricFM, iPartyRadio, Fusion Radio Chicago, Energy 98, B-91 ( ;) at JP!), RadioDanz, and a small show dedicated to new dance music that happens every Monday for an hour (7PM/Eastern) on Urban Latino Radio (I know...shameless plug ;) ).

But more importantly, we really have to reach out to the BIG advertisers out there in order for dance to succeed. That's who we have to get to.
