Pulse 87 is going off the air 10/30

nd2023

Banned
They have said that there will be a major announcement at 12:15 PM today, and the station is expected to sign off at 5:00 PM. Listen online at http://www.pulse87.com
Long story short, the Mega Media Group has been having financial problems for the past 5 years, well before Pulse 87 launched. The mountain of debt and the poor economy forced Mega Media into bankruptcy this August, not the failure of the dance format. The dance format was billing quite well and had a cume of nearly a million.
Thank you Pulse 87 for providing the New York area with a great dance station for the past 20 months.

And yet I continue to remain excited....

I don't even know where to begin, therefore I will not even start.
I'll just say that as of 2010, we're STARTING fresh.

2009 (the BIG year) will look like a dwarf star next to a supernova by this time next year. Just keep listening....

I wanted to say to all the dance music fans and staff at Pulse 87.7.

THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES!!!

The mixshows were great and fun to listen to.

I will always miss the mixshows and that's including Glenn Friscia's Saturday Night Dance Party.

Once again...Thank you for the memories and the staff for making this one of the best dance stations in New York City.

Sincerely Yours

BJ Steigner

Can't even get the site to load and the webstream seems to be down.
Pulse..you'll be missed...
hey big corps..are ya listening??

I will repeat what I said on the New York board.....
-----
I was there at the Pulse 87 studio when Alex Shvarts made the announcement, and I am thankful that my name was mentioned on the air Smiley

Yes, this is a sad time for dance music fans in New York City but you know what? I'm not going to feel down or upset! If anything I am happy because for 20 months, New York City had a FANTASTIC radio station whose interests catered DIRECTLY towards us, the dance fans that wanted a lot more than what other stations sounding "rhythmic" had offered. Pulse 87 wasn't just a station to me...it was family! From the very beginnings with Star and Buc Wild to the final moments with Borasio and Niko with DJ Serg mixing, Pulse 87 made my day everyday!

Sure, there are going to be pundits that will knock the station down for whatever quirks it had (bad signal, low dial position, the "ratings", etc.) That doesn't matter because with all said and done, Pulse did one thing which nowadays is VERY TOUGH to do....bring people BACK to terrestrial radio. In this age of Internet, digital media players, it is refreshing to have experienced an FM terrestrial radio station that really mattered to us.

As they say, one door closes, another one opens. And we hope to get that door open soon! We'll fight. We'll do whatever it takes in a positive and proactive manner.

THANK YOU Pulse 87! Now it's time for me to "get to work" here Smiley

And for Chris and whoever else wants to record the signoff....get to your radio by 4:30PM. Serious.

i know someone who would be willing to purchase there fallen ship....for the right price!

i dont do to much talking i just get at my business, so if anyone here know them guys have them e-mail me or message me here with there contacts and lets make it happen!

I did hear Tony's name over the air. It looks like people need to keep fighting or....in my case....offer to intern at the station if they do flip to a dance format and bring Pulse back to the dial.

This sucks.....But why can't a station like this run on shoestring??

If you've already got the studio and you already have the signal, then why can't "everyone" and I mean "everyone"....DJ's, Mixers, etc...do it just out of sheer love for it....Volunteer their services and drum up donations from listeners instead of money going to advertisers and staff salaries??

Does there have to be a payroll? Does there have to be profit in it??

Why can't the studio be in an apartment/condo/house?

Wouldn't that be 'real' love for this genre and this kind of radio station?

A station could be done from a residential home, but the right person has to do it. There are stations being run from home. The problem is that none of them are the right people, meaning that the people who are doing it have a love for something else, so they spend all their time and energy playing what they want. All we need is someone who likes dance to become one of those people.

For some reason, I'm not at all worried about what's happening, and it's not just because I'm going to London and may have the choice to not return to the U.S. if I don't want to either. The reason I'm not worried is because of what is on the way, and from here, there are endless avenues I could take this topic I just started... but to conserve time, I just wont go any further. I'll just be patient, wait for it to happen, then simply say "...and this is why I wasn't worried". As a matter of fact, I probably wont even have to say anything at all because when it happens, it will automatically be implied. People will realize and see what's happening and think to themselves "oh, so this is what crazy kdm was talking about..."

Oh, and what do you think is going to happen once the economy starts to improve? What? Radio will sit there and continue to turn away from dance as people continue to jump on the dance sound? Well if this is what you think, then I have another great idea that would go right along with your way of logic! Ready? Well Here it goes! Winter is coming, but just continue to pack away all your sweaters, jackets, scarfs, boots, and warm wear as you were doing in spring and keep your summer clothes out.

I can't resist the temptation to say more because there is so much more to say!!!

Just imagine - starting fresh.......
With almost all dance stations completely gone, there is really no choice now but to start a whole new formula, since there is really nothing left to make people think "well this formula must be used because that's what everyone else of "our kind" is doing, and all the other "groups" are also using a formula as well.." This is GOOD, because a refreshment in ideas and thinking was DEFINITELY needed. Now, lets just hope the FIRST person to bounce back with a new formula that everyone else will feel they have to follow, ends up using a formula that will work wonders!

Also, look at the music direction music is headed in, with even the most unexpected artists and people turning towards that sound.. Does anyone still REALLY think that "the end is near" in 2009? I cannot even bring myself to even come remotely close to understanding how someone could feel like all hope is lost when MUSIC, (not a physical building or computers or machines, but) MUSIC ITSELF is CURRENTLY going towards a dance direction AT AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF SPEED!! Oh, and not only that, think about the fact that the other countries surrounding us are ALREADY AHEAD of us! This is like you turning on your air conditioning in your mid level floor apartment when everyone else around you already has their air on - IT ONLY HELPS YOU TO REACH THE GOAL FASTER! Let me clarify - with the air conditioning, your goal is to get your place cool, (possibly just as cool as everyone else surrounding you). When it comes to dance music in the U.S, THE GOAL IS TO GET WHERE EVERYONE ELSE IS AT WHEN IT COMES TO DANCE ACCEPTANCE AND APPRECIATION! So in both situations, being surrounded by people who are ahead of you ONLY HELPS YOU GET THERE FASTER - ESPECIALLY when you yourself are already headed in that direction!!!!!!!

So, with that being said, there is NO WAY POSSIBLE, without a comet strike or some massive event taking place, that dance music stations will forever be history in the U.S. - NO WAY POSSIBLE! As a matter of fact, there are HUNDREDS of future dance music stations in disguise, probably RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE that most people don't even realize because the station hasn't reach that time point in the music evolution process yet where it can begin to sound blatantly obvious. Why do you think so many chr's are popping up coincidentally as more artists are abandoning hip hop and other things and going electronic? It's because they realize SOMETHING IS HAPPENING, but they are either
A. afraid to admit or accept the truth and call it what it is, or
B. have absolutely no idea what's going on, although they do recognize something is obviously changing.
CHR / Top 40 / HITS is ALWAYS the safest way to go when you don't know which way music is going - because obviously whatever is coming, it will most likely become the HITS (at at least some level).

So as you go out for halloween this weekend, people will say all kinds of stuff, dressing up all kinds of ways...etc. but it's the stuff most people are not talking about that will probably fool you!!

DO NOT BE FOOLED!

THERE ARE A LOT OF CHR'S CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN!!
In other words, there are many future dance stations disguised (or dressed up as) top 40 / Rhythmic...etc. but ONLY because we haven't yet gotten to the point where there is a sufficient amount of quality dance material to run an actual "dance station" on. Also, do not forget that we have a lot of dance HITS being labeled as other genres, in addition to many other factors.

We are CURRENTLY in exciting times, where each day we are getting closer and closer to getting (back) where we want to be. The clearing out of all the dance stations... just think of that like SPRING CLEANING, which brings me right back to where I was in the beginning - REFRESHMENT!!!!

People see stations dying, but what people do NOT see is all the future possibilities that have been popping up over the year! I've been talking about the dance music come back for a few years now, and mentioned that 2009 was going to be a BIG year,

BIG

But NOT ONCE did I ever mention that this would mean all sorts of dance stations would suddenly do better or pop up!!!!! You see? Not once. BUT, i DID say that more stations would START to jump on dance.... and this is precisely where we're at right now! Think about how a city is built (or rebuilt after a massive calamity); First, the population must grow and pure in, THEN the buildings and cities start to appear. Well, first we need the amount of quality hit dance material to grow, AND THEN the dance stations will start to appear, and as of right now, WE ARE GROWING.

Welcome to a whole new generation of sound in 2009. AND!!! AND!! IF you think 2009 was a great year of sound? Then.... I don't even know what to tell you about 2010. Events in 2009 (musically) will look so small in comparison that we might need to develop a new type of microscope to see it. Just be ready, and enjoy the excitement NOW, because eventually the excitement will fade as the electronic sound once again just becomes part of the norm here, just like in every other part of the world.

Lets just ASSUME that this entire sound is just a phase; WELL, the trend COULD die, BUT, imagine if this trend is just enough to get dance music BACK UP AND RUNNING again before it dies! Dance was never really the top, big thing, but there was a time it was able to successfully CO-EXIST at a certain level with many other formats. THIS TREND COULD BE WHAT BRINGS US BACK TO THAT POINT, where just like jazz, alternative, r&b, country, (and soon to be hip hop), it may not dominate the charts are be a on going trend, BUT it will still be present amongst other things and manage to have some crossovers into the U.S. top charts.

So in other words,
THERE IS A LOT TO BE EXCITED ABOUT, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!!!

Get Ready...... I think I've said enough for NOW.

KDM 7000-

Go to the L.A. Board and look what I wrote (airpab) on the thread that asks...."Time For A Little Fun: Your Dream Radio Station in L.A.

Don't know if I'm as "in to it" as you are.....but with ya!

The closing of a dance radio station is never good news. I wish those involved with Pulse the best. We've had Pulse's Abel Sanchez on Energy 98 weekends for the past year+. I know he'll be on this Saturday. I hope he'll be able to continue witih us.

Running a radio station on a shoe-string budget usually amounts to poor quality across the board, particularly on the engineering side of the ledger. Keeping the transmitter up and running in excellent condition requires money, bottom line. Transmitters, audio boards, automation systems...etc... don't repair themselves.

Speaking of radio stations signing off (almost to the day - 10/31), we're now upon the one year anniversary of KNRJ Phoenix Energy 92.7101.1 signing off after almost 6.5 years of dance.
