It seems like there's something "personal" that dance strikes on people. The Disco Sucks Campaign was ok to talk about, but the New York Dance Music Coalition is a crime?
Granted, I was only 12 when the "Disco Sucks" movement had occurred. Looking at articles from that era, it was more of a cry against gay pride and black/Latino pride versus the music in itself. Musically what happened were rock groups and artists (Queen, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart) doing "disco" style tunes which helped fuel the fire to the rock fan base (mainly white males). That's where the "disdain" came from. Add to the fact that Steve Dahl (the "father" of the disco sucks movement) was fired from a Chicago radio station because of a change of format to disco, it got the ball rolling for the rock fanbase to express that anger as well as express their own "machisto" attitudes that was associated with rock. It was just "easier" to kick down a musical genre then to face the real fact that society was rapidly changing and becoming more liberal, post Vietnam War.
And now for the history lesson of the coalition.... ;D
When I formed the coalition back in 1994 (when it was known as the Metro New York Dance Radio Coalition), it was done as a response to a mini radio "war" blocking dance music at that time here.
FOR THE RECORD (and to those that were affected, I want them to pay CLOSE attention to this) I did the coalition in terms of getting the dance music fan's perspective and
NOT PRO or AGAINST any of the parties involved during the conflict. I knew
NEITHER of the principals personally; only that I read the newspaper and found out what had happened. The sole purpose at that time was to get more exposure of the music onto the radio and that NYC needed a new dance station.
Prior to the coalition, there was never a "collective" for dance music fans to speak out. And throughout those years, as well as the past 3 years, I have certainly received a lot of feedback from the fan base....to the point that the dance music industry took notice to what we were doing; being that we only wanted what was best for the music as a whole as well as offer FULL support in terms of helping get this music the exposure it deserves in terms of contemporary music.
What ALSO happened, (you D21, Nick, Myke25, DanceDiva and other pro fans are representative of this) is that people ARE speaking back to those, that are either against dance music or perhaps don't understand dance music, without any sort of fear knowing that we ARE here to give full support and defense to their opinions. If staunchly backing up the opinions of the fans, artists, industry professionals, clubs, radio industry supporters, labels, promoters, producers, etc., is a "crime", then guilty as charged....lock me up and throw away the key! Believe me, there are those that have tried to knock the coalition down (including radio professionals) as well as attack me personally. Heck, I'll take that "bullet" for the music, but this time we are and will continue to be here for the fans of dance.
Radaio, I did re-read your comments and my reaction was based on your reply towards John Parker. Not that John needs ANY defense from me

since he is a pro in the dance music industry and knows his stuff but I just felt, OMG, here we go again. And I will add, that just because you have DJ spun music in the background of an artist singing instead of an actual band of musicians doesn't make that dance artist "less" talented than anyone else. If anything, it IS all relative to ones tastes. For some, they'd rather hear actual talent in the playing of instruments and singing, for others it's about the gyrating moves being done on stage with vocals provided over a recorded track. You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to....all preference.
I MUST STATE that the NYDMC is NOT here to "convert" anyone. We are all about unity in the dance music community. If a "newbie" wants to learn more about dance music, we would accept that person with open arms! Likewise, for those that are into other forms of music and want to find out what we're about, they are "welcome" as well. The doors are open for everyone, if they choose on their own behalf, to walk through them. And once again, if a person doesn't like dance music, that's fine. Everyone has different tastes; that's what makes the world go 'round.
To be fair, when the coalition first started there were members within our community that were talking trash against "hip-hop" (being that Hot 97 had flipped from dance to this format) in the same way rock fans talked trash about dance music. That was something totally uncalled for, IMHO, and I had to make clear to everyone that what we are doing isn't "anti hip-hop" or "anti-Hot 97". Just as we don't want people bashing us, we certainly don't need to bash others. The hip-hop community was very acceptant of that and we've welcomed those from that community into ours. But with all communities the focus is clear that we are ABOUT dance music and if other genres want to "experiment" with dance, that we would encourage it.
Basically.....the NYDMC is not ANYONE's "enemy" here. But at the same time if someone is going to interject a "bash" onto an opinion, then we're fighting back. If another "dance music sucks" movement like the one in Comiskey Park in 1979 occurred today, this time around there would be "cloud" settling in. That cloud is the NYDMC and its members that stand behind us.
Look, enjoy life!

It's too short! And in that vain, let's all respect one another, even if we don't agree!
Thank you.
Now back to topic...... (apologies to those that felt I have "bogarted" this thread. But no apologies in our defense for dance music.)
