Is Los Angeles a dance town? When I think of Dance Music in the United States, I think of New York City and Chicago.

Considering how well CHR/Rhythmic KISS-FM performs in that market, I think you can make the case that LA should be every bit as amenable to a current dance station as NYC.

what about san francisco and miami?

The 4 or 5 Dance tunes thrown onto Power 96/Miami's playlist works for them. The Pure Dance station (with a full signal) Miami had a few years back didn't do well. I know some people said the station's owners didn't hire many DJs and the music didn't work well for that market.

Dont know much about the San Francisco market. Cant comment on that.

Miami's pure dance station played the same washed up trance vocals over and over and over... its no wonder it didnt do well. Theres awesome dance music out there.. theres hasnt been a station to showcase the music yet...

every pure dance channel is going to do that, the energy in sf, phoenix and this new pulse is going to do that, the format gets tired after a while

I can listen to Party 105, z88.9, iPartyRadio.com, and other dance stations all day and hear few repeats. The station has to have a wide playlist, yet play the hits often.

Pulse won't be playing simply washed up trance vocals. The station is dance oriented. Dance music covers a huge range of music. The format gets tired when programmed poorly. I have yet to hear a good dance station in the US. although C89.5 out of Seattle is probably the best in this country.
I think that with good personality and of course some music to appeal to the masses Pulse will have a good life span. There is buzz around this station and that's huge.
Dance music and stations work well in Europe but if you listen to them they spice it up a bit and that is what I hope Pulse 87 will do!

Party in Miami pulled decent numbers before the ownership felt that they needed to switch to get bigger numbers playing rock. Well that worked out real well for them didn't it. ;)

Miami is also the #1 Market for sales of "Electronica" albums according to the Soundscan Index rating. The index rating indicates how well a genre sells within that market as compared to the national average. "Electronica" covers all of dance for the purposes of Soundscan.

San Francisco has a rich history in dance music. From the Dance Oriented Rock days to the days of West Coast Freestyle right up to todays House scene. Energy does very well there.

Los Angeles is also a spot where dance music has worked before but it probably would have to be a very Pop dance driven station to work in todays enviorment. Groove radio while not a major success did have a nice following. Also when 103.1 played dance they did ok. KIIS does not play dance music and hasn't for sometime now.

There are good dance stations in the US. WMPH does a good job, check them out

Speaking of Indie 103.1 in LA, I think the format before the flip to Alternative was, lo and behold, Current Dance, and it failed miserably!

It depends on your point of view. As I understand, Clear Channel say KDL as a threat to KIIS, and they saw they'd do better financially to kill KDL through an advertising agreement with Entravision, than they would to lose 0.5 to 1.0 share points to KDL.

In all, I'd say KDL did TOO well for it's own good.

Pulse sounds awesome. The signal is pretty good here in Nassau, actually its stronger than Party 101.5. Now I have two dance stations to listen to here in Nassau! In alot of ways I like Pulse better than Party, they play more dance music plus older euro tracks. Party doesn't play as much older trance stuff. I was listening to Party yesterday in the morning show, they played Foggy "Come Into My Dreams" and I was like, haven't heard it in a long time, but the song stopped after 30 seconds and they played some slow jam.
Andre always puts the best playlist together, mornings are way too R&bish.
I am definately gonna be checking out the Pulse now.

my only gripe with pulse is with what's playing now..

they're playing expose's original recording of "point of no return" before jeanette, gioia and ann re-recorded it for their debut album in 1987. i still love my girls, so it's tolerable. i was never really crazy about this particular track, since the original's voice sounds so nasal and droopy.

The Sandee version...ahhh, remember it well. Part of the "Salkowitz Signature" songs from the days of Hot 103/97, which I actually like and made me scratch my head wondering...if 'KTU was into older dance, then why did they ignore these???

Back in 2004 is when kiss 102.7 in los angeles went from a cool chr/pop to much more chr/rhythmic alot more urban then it was and had pryor to the flip to more urban played some dance they had the kiss mix at noon everyday which was cool. I do not like kiss in los angeles anymore i know it does much better numbers and everything else but i think clear channel ruined a good chr in 2004. I love indie but the numbers are no better then anything at that frequency a 1031.1 i guess it is an easier sell then dance was or why after 4 plus years would indie still be around. Good luck with our alls new dance station!!!But why doesn't cbs flip there k rock to be similar to la's k rock very odd??? 92.3 is bad!!!

i've got some faint yet fond memories of the old Hot 103.... I must've been like 7 or 8, in one of those summer day camps and all of the older camp counselors crammed around this gigantic, typical 80's silver boom-box listening, trying to dance.. trying because, well, they were big geeks.. :)

but it was fun and i listened and remembered bill lee and just hearing something upbeat. i love the original hot 97 site w/ all of its incredible archived video. back then, i can only imagine how much energy people had, being so happy working in the business. not the cookie-cutter conveyer belt that produces dj's with no talent, personality or the companies that bought and merged left and right, only to use the regurgitated sound elsewhere.

i'm glad the pulse is here.. joel i'm sure will do well and do justice again to the nyc airwaves.

NOW STREAM ONLINE ALREADY, WILL YA? lol

The Daily News today reports that the Star and Buc Wild morning show may be delayed a week depending on how Star is feeling. He said he'll see how he feels at the end of the week.

Just a quick update as I didn't see this posted anywhere on the board.
