Pulse 87's Subway Ad Campaign

I remember the old Hot 97 subway ads....they need to replicate something like that. The station sounds good, now it's a matter of actually getting people to find it all the way down on 87.7. An aggressive marketing campaign will do just that, especially if people sample the station and like what they hear.

I am in midtown right now and hear nothing but static on 87.7
All the other FM's come in just fine. With a dial position of 87.7 and a crappy signal nobody is going to listen.

The Dance crowd in New York City is desperate. They will find a way to listen.

The Hip-Hop crowd is tired of corny Miss Jones on Hot 97 and 50 year old Ed Lover on Power 105.1.

I own a Walkman with TV audio from VHF 2-13... In Manhattan, I get a pretty faint signal of a dance station on Channel 6.

Meanwhile, I heard a Spanish station with very clear reception on Channel 4 - over WNBC! (Unless Martha Stewart has a mariachi band as a musical guest...)

I doubt that you'll be seeing any big ad campaign for the station. It's probably going to be all word of mouth.

As for the signal, I cannot receive it in my office in Manhattan (25th btw 6th & 7th Ave) but I can receive it in my car from right outside the building all the way out to Long Island. The only time it cut out was in the tunnel. My office radio is a piece of garbage that's 12 years old and if I stretch the wire antena all the way out I get a staticy signal.

The station is a very interesting mix of CHR/Dance that is going to catch some ears. The slogan is easy enough for the masses to find the station as well, first on your FM dial. :)

The negativity people have about the station is amazing. First, the dial position doesn't matter as much as people think. If the programming is something people want to hear, and word gets out that if you tune to 87.7 you'll hear that sort of programming, people will tune in.

Second, while the signal is not bad, with much lower wattage than the ESB stations, it's going to have trouble penetrating midtown Manhattan and the office buildings there. However, reception doesn't seem to be a problem in the car and in people's homes, even in places like Nassau and Westchester counties.

Which means KTU and Z100 wont see any kind of ratings decline.

What's reality? That they don't have a signal that penetrates the skyscrapers in Manhattan well? Even many ESB stations have trouble doing that, not to mention other stations like WFUV. When I worked downtown, most ESB signals had static and were inconsistent at best, on a fairly decent stereo in the office where I worked. Plus, I don't think Pulse 87.7 is banking on much office listening.

And without a DOUBT, the New York Dance Music Coalition will be that "mouth!" We're going to campaign FOR Pulse 87 and get the word out there! We will agressively target the health clubs, salons, businesses that use radio for their music background, to turn the knob over to 87.7. Our movement begins NOW!

I thought it was a nice coincidence today when I saw an old Hot 97 subway ad, probably from the late 80s or early 90s, at the Columbus Circle subway station, partially obscured by some construction going on...this was right off of the uptown 1 platform.

I'm now hearing that there very well might be a big advertising push. I guess nobody will really know until it happens, or doesn't. :-X

Either way the station is off to a good start.

wow where exactly is this..let's take pics!!!!

I would have definitely taken a picture if I had a camera. It was by the front end of the Uptown tracks on the 1 train, by the staircase going downstairs for the transfer to the B/D. There was construction going on, so half the ad was partially obscured by a temporary wall, but the half that was visible was clearly the old Hot 97 logo, in red with a black background, and the call letters "WQHT" in sharp white lettering at the bottom right-hand corner of the ad.

I have asked C-Town Supermarket,Pioneer Supermarket, Two 99 Cent Stores and about 4 Latin Bodegas here in Jersey City to change their radios to Pulse. They all have. They thanked me for letting them know about Pulse.

The gym I go to is called Pulse. Im gonna ask them to tune to it.. ("duuuude, its as if you have your own station playing cuz they say Pulse on the air!"...lol) They play XM BPM right now... which isnt a bad choice either...

I can (barely) hear Pulse from Exit 8 on the NJ Turnpike to Bridgeport, Connecticut. It's not very strong until you get close to New York.

The signal reports are becoming quite redundant, especially since it really seems to have to do with the type of receiver one is using as much as anything else. Personally, I've carried 87.7 more or less clearly up to Bridgeport and to Middletown, NY, and on two different radios, that I don't think are anything particularly special...they seem to offer more or less standard reception quality for other stations, but I dunno, maybe I'm blessed with some special receivers :)
