Raydio, you nailed it right there!
The first thing I was thinking of, when Mega Media wanted to put the "Pulse" brand in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., was the fact that each station would have to be unique to each given market. It couldn't be a simulcast of Pulse 87 in New York for this reason.....
Granted, classic freestyle still holds big to some in New York, despite the fact that the sound had been over-abused. Pulse 87, despite it being a "current" station at the time, still played the old school freestyle which can go back to Joel Salkowitz' days at WQHT (Hot 103/Hot 97) back in the 80's and early 90's in New York. While freestyle still holds a certain "heart" to those in New York (also So. Jersey/Philly and Miami), that classic sound will NOT fly outside of those areas, especially if you are going to make this into a national brand. Few people outside of the markets I've noted know about freestyle.
Stations like Fusion Radio and Energy 98 have the right idea. They are current, but most importantly "generic" enough with their dance format to make it work everywhere in this country. And even though Fusion does have that lean to Chicago, there is still something about what they are doing that works out well. If Pulse is going to hit into L.V. and other markets throughout the country and still use Judy Torres and Coro, then they'd better be on top of "Stay" and "Sexy Lady" (artists respectively) instead of the 14,267,267th run of "No Reason To Cry" and the 26,234,778th run of "Where Are You Tonight".
I do know of dubstep and eventually more of that sound will make its way through. But without a
DOUBT, electronic/dance music is coming back!
You've mentioned your event in Grand Rapids. You should have seen ELECTRIC ZOO in New York!

For both days there had to be at least
60,000 people! The tents and main stage areas were PACKED with people of all walks and types in life dancing around in unity to the various DJ sounds! That was incredible! With Lady Gaga taking home 8 moonmen at the VMA's along with seeing Deadmau5 doing the DJ'ing, things are turning around for the better!
I am SO PROUD!! (admittedly I choked up during an interview on Sirius/XM's "Area" during the Electric Zoo festival).
We'll see what happens, I guess.
