Purdue Flagship

Is there any news on an agreement between AMP or Schurz and Purdue Sports? Last I heard was that AMP was waiting to see if the Big Ten Network would get on the Lafayette Comcast system before they would negotiate price for the coming seasons. Now that Comcast will be carrying Big Ten and Purdue Sports, it would make the radio value much less, I would think. Anyway, that will be art's point of view.

OK - I'll at least agree that it may a bargaining chip to negotiate a cheaper "rights fee" to Learfield. Sounds like Art is still calling the shots for Artie .. uh.. Arthur.

Art and Learfield have been in bed together for years. I don't anticipate a change in Lafayette, but I don't anticipate a rights fee that will be "reduced'.

New network affiliate?

"Klove" pronounced ala Rush Limbaugh "algore"?

WIBN?

Battle Ground WASK?

I guess the point is Artie (I understand he doesn't like being called his youthful name anymore so this must be an obvious attempt by some here to burst his last bubble) doesn't have authority to make any real decisions and Art doesn't want to pay for the network. Just clear the spots for Learfield?

They had used the AM (WAZY AM when anyoe last cared about AM) to clear things like Purdue University Girls ------ and Carey Quad Olympics.

Purdue wants credible coverage of ALL it's sports (Even Girls ------) on something someone can hear. (Or will be in the right decade for sponsors (not AM)).

WASK FM would be the obvious choice as it wouldn't interfere with K105. I suspect if they agreed to clear girls games on AM AND FM on WASK they would get the contract for little money as value added....

Given the treatment of sports on AM over the years and treatment of Purdue in general all the Univesities are seeing a need for change. Can anyone relate the money aspect of this if the figures are known. Does Artietistic sell it or does Purdue sell it so it's a trade of funds? Rights fee traded for guaranteed alumni sponsor income?

Doesn't Dave Keister and Mid America have an A in Bloomington that could carry IU sports? If he networked his other stations in the State this could be a real network.

BTW cornhole is a sport recognized with specific rules and regulations down to the size of the bags and the kernels of corn that are used in the bags. This the term corn comes from the bags and the term hole is from the points given for bags landing in the holes thus the term cornhole which has been truncated from the post. Good Day!

Dave has Spirit 95, along with WCBK and WCLS that are all audible in Bloomington. Spirit 95 is non-com, though.

They're actually called "women" now; they have library cards and everything.

They are only "girls" at the high school level or below.

That said, women's college sports don't make money outside of a scant few places like Knoxville and Hartford.

I'm not saying that it's right or it's wrong, just that it's true.

Sorry not to be PC.

Simply referring to gender, not a slam.

I didn't think it was intentional, nor do I think you an unenlightened pig for it.

I pointed it out to:

A. get the laugh
B. make the case that, for all that the marketers of women's sports try to gain acceptance, they're still seen by the bulk of advertisers and audience members as "girls' sports."

Wow I still am trying to get over the fact that Purdue may have a library let alone the fact that chicks now can get a library card, that spells danger why some day some leftist feminst may try and run for President.

Schurz would be the obvious (and only) choice if Learfield takes the Purdue sports franchise off the AMP stations.

I suppose if Schurz doesn't want to pick up the volleyball, baseball, and softball broadcasts, they could always make some sort of deal to air the games on WBAA-AM again. That's where they were before 1410 began airing them in 1998.

Schurz has a perfectly good sports talker in need of more local content. WBAA-AM shouldn't be needed.

Here IS a question. Most Universities don't have an FM OR a Heritage AM.

Why aren't they using their own stations and underwriting to support their own teams? Too much trouble?

Technically,if a non-commercial radio station solicits underwriting, the underwriting funds go back into the station operation - not the athletic dept. Many athletic depts. have cannabilized the university radio station to gain coverage and have used the station to generate $ - this is illegal!

The sports program is part of the school. What the school does with it is irrelevant, If they adhere to enhanced underwriting rules.

I see the point but nothing illegal takes palce in this instance as in the past at WBAA. I can see that the 1410 signal vs WBAA is lackluster if this is the comparison.

And the setup for the programs on 1410? 1) Make sure the AM is on; 2) Make sure the Comrex will seize the line when talent calls (no board op); 3) Hope automation doesn't mess up and hope the pd of whichever station is stuck with the job this week has programmed spots and fill and the in and out commands.

The only program being given any consideration is men's athletics and the way this is run isn't much better but Artie gets sales to sell something they get real money for that Purdue doesn't share. (Tailgate parties, bar parties, etc).

If Learfield didn't feed it good luck getting it on but typically it is automated too. Sometimes it goes on and sometimes it doesn't.

I don't understand what you mean - rules are rules regardless if the school has a sports program. If a non-commercial station is licensed to a University (usually the board of trustees) therefore any underwriting, enhanced or otherwise, the $ generated must go back into the radio station and not into another area of the University.

Learfield will never use WBAA, with the exception of maybe using its services, because they would not be able to generate revenue to send back to Missouri.

Purdue receives guaranteed money from Learfield...too bad a local company could not get the rights and create a Network.

Don't understand the concept you have here on the illegal money.

If the station airs games and underwriting goes to the mens program this is still a division of the University.

Non profits in Indiana are accountable with even Bingo money. Certain income over x dollars HAS to go to another entity. Donations, etc.

Checks for all the staff at WBAA come from the University. No different checking account just another number in the big Purdue ledger book.

The movement of funds to even the basketball program isn't illegal by any means if approved by someone upstairs.

While the program IS a moneymaking entity it is also a part of a non profit school. Kind of like selling hot dogs.

Now, is it good that radio gets scrumed? i'd say it happens all the time at University radio stations. Not a goodthing but not illegal.

BTW Don't tell Purdue they can air commercials for ANY University (non profit ) entity they want because it is non profit. Hospitals and medical clinics fall under the non profit rule. The Indiana State Fair. Advertise ticketed events, it's a non profit.

Rules apply to for profit entities. Comparitive, call to action, not a problem for a non profit.

Chief Engineer - You might think about consulting the FCC. I managed non-commerical stations for 20 years and can tell you that a non-commerical radio station, operated by a University, can seek underwriting, however underwriting dollars cannot go to any other area of the University except the radio station. This means the athletic dept. It also explains why the University radio station cannot be involved in a development campaign for the University, unless it is for the staiton of course.

I never said underwriting was illegal, except if it is being operated as an extension of the atheltic dpet.

I am trying to place a stake in the property you are claiming here to measure it and you are bouncing around.

You seem to be trying to re-write Corporation law here and the statement Radio money can't go to the athletic department is simply not true. If the transfer of funds in in compliance with Indiana Law, and such a move would be, the Commission isn't in the area you note.

There is no law, and let us see the CFR reference so we can reference, that allows the Commission to determine or restrict an entity using funds from it's station as a licensee. I would love to see they can't use educational money from the Radio Station to educate kids, or, even better, that they can't use educational funding to operate the radio station. Do you see how common sense has to apply here? The same general funds wash both ways.

I have dealt with DC Lawyers in the past 10 years about all areas of Underwriting.

Goldstein in Enforcement would rather answer a stupid question now as opposed to some weasel asking later saying they thought it was okay...

Many NON COM stations are operated as an LMA and the income does not go to the radio staton licensee. This invalidates one theory promoted. This is legal and involves a Licensee and another unrelated entity.

If the University is the Licensee it reports EEO. The entire employment unit is the University if properly applied. Same entity.

If a Non Com runs announcements for any Non Commercial entity it CAN violate call to action , promotional, comparitive. This is accepted policy according to Staff. And when I say Staff I mean Commission Staff.

The Babe Ruth team is having a Lemonade Stand at the ballpark this afternoon. Good lemonade, better than any I've ever tasted. Go down this afternoon and get some. Call Jimmy's mom with questions at 555-1212.

St Johns Hospital. Caring in action. The Best doctors, the Best Hospital, St Johns. Call 555-1212 for more information.

All acceptable, all unrelated entities. So a related entity owned by the same Licensee unit would have the same benefit. Even if unrelated it is acceptable and legal.

The rules were established to keep "crass" for profit entities from running commercials. The non commercial service is to support non commercial entities.

It allows basic descriptions including motto for for profit entities. "Nothing runs like A Deere" is acceptable believe it or not.

Speaking of 1410, AMP's AM in Lafayette that does carry much of Purdue sports has been off the air for over four days now. How long can they be off the air without notifying the FCC? Maybe they're gearing up to go Spanish?

I think that people have been telling Art and Fred to go Spanish for over a year and they keep acting like the language doesnt even exist. I agree Spanish on 1410 would be the best move they could make!

You're reading WAY too much into this.

SHHH! They don't KNOW it's off. Up to 2 weeks previously because the people who used to be there to do all the stuff (like make sure all the transmittrs are on) are gone.
