Pure speculation

Just for kicks; Any ideas on stations that seemed primed for a format flip in early 2013? One of the country stations is really hurting in ratings

Turning 98.1 any which way would shake up the market. Of course, some of us want oldies.... ;D

(Hey, what the hell, we over 50s have money to spend, too!)

How about in San Antonio?

I wish a company with a full powered stick in Austin OTHER than clear channel would launch a country station and a real hip hop station.

But if you are 50 or over, and particularly 55 and over, advertisers that use ratings to buy don't want to spend money to reach you.

Or that a decent hip-hop station or maybe commercial free station of anything would launch here on one of those translators. There's way too much Spanish religious programming on the FM dial. Is that even a big market?

For San Antonio I would place my wagers on in no particular order

1. 106.7
2. 104.5
3. 104.1
4. 103.1 (a silence format)
5. AM 1250 (If Deportes does well on 720, then no)
6. 99.5 (far fetched, but Rock stations have been by the wayside, for example KLOL and KIOL Houston)
7. 92.5 & 105.7 or just one of the frequencies could relay something else.

I wouldn't count on the others, or non commercial stations such as Air 1 to flip.

For the Clear Channel station that might flip, my wager would be on 98.1 KVET, of course.
For the NON-CLEAR CHANNEL station it would be K G S R.

I have my reasons for K G S R "Great Sounding Radio" to flip.

1. KUTX will hurt KGSR bad because they are non commercial and run by UT. They don't have to depend on airtime, just donations, and they are a plenty.

2. KUTX will feature the same songs as KGSR and the old KGSR, it is run by Susan Castle one of the old KGSR guards. The same effect would happen to KVET if KOKE was on a stronger signal!

3. Emmis could protect it's Bob FM property by flipping to Classic Hits, and for the mainstream rock and alternative they own KLBJ 93.7 "The Rock of Austin" and KROX 101x Alternative Rock, For the EDM scene there's Mega on HD2.

4. KGSR's ratings are slipping as well (not as bad as KVET)

On to KVET....

Have you noticed that "Jammin 103.1" is playing more Classic Hits songs in it's rotation? I have. Del Kommisar by After the Fire? It has been evolving away from Rhythmic AC.

All Clear Channel needs to do is 1. Further expand Jammin's playlist (in process) and 2. Switch frequencies from 103.1 to 98.1 and vise versa. Doing so wouldn't hurt the situation as KOKE and 103.1 would be on the same playing field in terms of signal.

Bo Chase and Andi McKay were telling Austin listeners that they would be resurfacing on the Austin radio dial. I wonder what project Bo will be working on in the next couple of weeks.

Comedy 102.7 has also been tapering off. They could make KGSR 93.3 on just 102.7 to further protect Bob. 93.3 for Classic Hits so another competitor such as Clear Channel doesn't hurt the numbers in the station's cluster, and 102.7 KGSR for listeners to flip to when Bob FM is not playing some currents, and 93.3 when 93.7 plays Zeppelin too much for the average classic rock listener.

I got a feeling Classic Hits will be back in Austin KXBT's last PPM was 4.0 though cume was a little flat over the last months.

I wonder if Krash could give us some insight on what is Emmis top ranking station in Austin? Is it KLBJ-AM and then KBPA, or KBPA first, then KLBJ-AM?

The 55+ demographic doesn't have as much money to spend as it used to. Article after article in the financial media points out that boomers have woefully inadequate levels of savings and are loaded with debt. Boomers got hammered in the 2008 crash. Pensions are disappearing. What savings there are earn virtually nothing in interest. One statistic I've heard numerous times: 70% of retirees only have Social Security as a money source.

This isn't your parents 55+ any more..

What country station is hurting in the ratings?

JAMMiN still plays lots of songs that wouldn't even make it to a Classic Hits station, although I've noticed some changes as you have. I've noticed a lot less Prince and MJ and a few more titles that are less Rhythmic.

Another improvement is a gradual slow down of the music. Although, I wish the processing didn't pump so much. I keep thinking the audio output transistors in my old Sears radio are failing.

If Oldies/Classic Hits in the same vein as the former KXBT was to appear anywhere, I'd figure it would be better off on a solid signal to reach those areas advertising would work for it. 250 watts, while a tremendous trip that signal takes, isn't enough, IMHO. Nightly tropo, much more common than in years past, tears up those signals.

I still think Entercom is wasting the 96.3 signal with a simulcast of 1370. And Emmis has their FM simulcast of 590, too.

Entercom is still doing oldies on KKMJ HD2. They could easily flip a switch and simulcast that on 96.3.

True, I think I mentioned that. Or they could possibly use another translator as 103.1 isn't owned by Clear Channel. If they do, probably 95.1. But to get better coverage, it would be wiser for Entercom to flip 1370 to Oldies (do you notice that 1370 has a lot of time slots that need to be covered according to their website for 1370?)

My pure speculation is this: 1) no big stick station will flip to oldies because the format is too hard (they are too lazy) to sell, 2) though KVET-FM should probably flip, they won't do it because they see it as a way to mess with KOKE-FM. Its always personal with those guys (I won't stand by that too hard but I really don't think they want to flip it). 3) KGSR is in flux and will probably change again at some point, 4) LA Lloyd is the new PD for KLBJ-FM and it remains to be seen what he will do but I can see a little bit more of the 101X vibe mixed in there, 5) Clear Channel will have to sell off some properties within the next 5 years.

Interesting that KOKE-FM has not taken him off their homepage yet...
