Purposely faked rumors

Throughout "Radio-info" there are people who think or want to see something happen at a station. If the subject is hot enough, the rumor mill rolls. Contributing are those who are in-the-know or say they have inside information about a format change, frequency switch or whatever. Have there ever been any confirmed cases of stations or companies either purposely putting out patently false rumors or having somebody placing false rumors for them in order to throw everyone off-track?

Sure, it happens all the time. I can think of a few instances where rumors have been rolled via this and other web sites by insiders. One has to be realistic though.. The impact is hardly measurable. When starting a rumor to throw off the competition, one has to take into account the audience. This site seems to be regularly attended by a few pros, mostly from the sidelines, with the majority either being former radio employed or hobbyists. More impactful is using the local AE jungle telegraph or air talent to have rumors reach their target.

It is amusing to watch the regulars on these pages get their knickers in a twist about some new format change rumors isn't it?

I think most everyone here is just eager beaver radio types who don't have a gig now.
Peops with overactive imaginations and too much idle time, that kind of thing. If you want a radio rumor to reach the target, you're probably better off using the AE tellafriend-telegraph, like you said.
Even if someone from the competition started a rumor here, I doubt it would have much effect. The people it might affect are busy elsewhere. It's all in good fun and an exercise in imagination, mostly....
