Push-to-Talk handset for newsroom

Do any of you fine folks have a preferred source for PTT handsets, if not a whole 2500-style set?

Yes, I support a real newsroom with real people recording real interviews -- at least the reels are long gone.

Thanks

Ah.... "back in the day" when we rented our phones from Ma Bell, they did offer a handset with a push to talk button... for an extra rental fee!

I have a pretty decent Panasonic desk phone that has a MUTE switch in the body of the phone that works well when I participate in conference calls.

I think at one time I owned a headset that had a mute switch in the cord... but I haven't seen anythink like that lately. When I worked in the newsroom I always preferred a headset. I don't know about today's news people. I suspect the females of the species don't like a headset that is going to fight with their hair-do.

The "AT&T" phones sold at Office depot have a mute button (as well as a conventional handset).
They are multi-line phones that just need tip/ring for each line.

Haven't seen a real PTT handset on new equipment in a long time--have an old QKT phone (Bell 500) with one in one studio that is at least 40 years old.

Used to "roll my own" by putting a button on the handset... pressing the button closed the circuit for the mic element on the phone. Required a drill, button, and soldering.

What made this nice as opposed to a mute button, is that one could only talk if the button were pressed.

Got some low profile momentary rocker switches of that use.
Used somehing like a 47 mfd cap in series with a 20 k resistor accross the electret microphone and would short out the resistor with the switch to mute the mic. Cap would then be accross the mic. Much reduced the pop rather than simply opening the circuit. Only thing I notice is the earpiece can act as a weak mic so no yelling bad things at the caller.
