Pushing The Envelope

I definitely wouldn't want to hear "Take My Breath Away". The instrumentals on a lot of songs are just too jarring to be acceptable. I mentioned the Michael Bolton song and the reason I called it a dance remix was sysnthesized percussion moving faster than a human could. It lasted only a short time but was VERY disconcerting.

Timeless Favorites played "Meet Me Halfway" by Kenny Loggins, which made me want to throw the radio at someone.

Over the weekend I remembered "Harden My Heart" by Quarterflash. That was either on Memories or on the local affiliate, but I don't know which, since I don't know whether they were local at the time. The same thing happened with "Don't Stop Believin'".

My late Mom was in her mid '70's when that song came out and she loved it. I asked her what he liked about it and she said the backing instruments. You just never know!

There are lots of newer standards that I can think of that can be played without diluting the format. "Everything I do" and some of the others talked about here would not be on that list!
As long as the instrumentals are appropriate I'm usually open to new versions. A few years ago network TV had today's stars performing the standards and just the commercial was a disaster. Because the vocal and instrumental performances were the same as the mess on top 40 radio.

I have to wonder what people thought of this.

The last 25 minutes of the local morning show on my Dial Global station are mostly the six most requested songs, whatever that means. It used to be the answer to "Name That Tune" followed by five requested songs. The last song played before the news is usually "Mr. Lucky" and we usually don't get to hear it all because the DJ, who owns the station, is usually taking through most of it.

Lately the songs played during those last 25 minutes have been getting closer to the Dial Global playlist, as opposed to a few years ago when they tended to be more like the old ABC Memories format the station used until it was dropped. Two other area stations played Timeless Classics so they couldn't do that, even though the DJ had once worked for a third area station that had that format. Plus when the man's son would fill in he would play such wacko stuff as .38 Special, REO Speedwagon and the Doobie Brothers. Now the father has played "Physical", "Material Girl" and "I Got You" but never would I have imagined ...

"We Are the Champions" by Queen.

For them to even have this song reflects their extensive sports coverage. Perhaps they have it in case one of their teams wins some big championship.

So you're referring to "Buddy" at Memories 1280 huh?"Mr. Lucky" is one of my favorites. (even though he plays it everyday) The rest of your post must be for a different station? -- Normally I wouldn't consider "38 Special" or the "Doobies" to be wacko, but I suppose if "standards" was the format... then they're a bit off the mark.

The entire post is about one station. Because the other DJ is his son he can get away with it. Or could. I haven't heard those off-the-wall artists lately.

Actually, it was "China Grove" that was off the wall. As a Memories affiliate the station played "Black Water", "Listen to the Music" and "What a Fool Believes", all of which I like but not along with standards.

"When Will I Be Loved" was played the other day, and I do mean Linda Ronstadt. On the other hand, so was "Calcutta" by Lawrence Welk.

I want to point out that a birthday winner turned 20. I don't know precisely what that means, but there's some contest that I used to hear about but it's too hard to drag myself out of bed that early.

Oh, and I don't mind that "Mr. Lucky" plays every day because I'm not usually where I can listen to a radio at the time.

Interesting development the other day: one of the six-pack was a song about Smokin' Joe's Cafe. In a movie set in the mid-1950s, these prep school students were dancing to that song and an uptight teacher who was in charge of the dorm told them to shut off that noise. If they want to listen to music, they should listen to the same artists Dial Global plays who were popular in the 50s.

"You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt was on the local morning show. That is all-request, though, but still, I could do without this one.

I'm a lot younger than your mom was at that time but I liked that song for the very same reason.

And my middle son, who was 7-8 years old at the time, wanted that playing every night when he went to bed. He did that for years.

You just never know!

I keep hearing "Love Me Do" but it's a commercial for a concert. "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", unfortunately, is there too.

Oh yes.... and what's the song that it ends with in that extended verse? --- I Feel Fine? (good song-- but somewhat annoying)

Okay, Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" has to go.

It seemed okay at first, but the girl has one of those voices that makes you think of "90210", "Life Unexpected", "Smallville" and those other CW shows I don't watch with the so-called music.

Plus the lyrics are way too cutesy. Maybe some of the 70s material is just as cutesy and I'm just used to it, but I think someone dropped the ball with this one. Plus it was played today right before Michael Jackson. That's just too much.

This morning I heard "Rooster" by Alice in Chains.

Of course, I could tell that the signal was such that it was interference from another station.

Actually, when I heard the station ID, it was an FM station. Ironically, there are two AM stations in the town where the station I wanted to listen to is located. The other is in the same place on some radios as the FM station I was hearing. But flipping from FM back to AM gave me the station I wanted. Weird. As for how this happened, I must have picked up the radio the wrong way when I turned off the yelling preacher on Sunday.
