Put ZZO to bed.

C'mon LVH! Have you had enough of ZZO? By the looks of things....yes.They are bringing up the rear with a 5 in the latest book. The station next door are doing great (Mr Chase, please sit down. You did nothing). And well done LEV.A real PD right there as well as the country bumpkins twanging away.Good for them! And the gang in Easton? Well they have other things on their minds right now.But alas, the once mighty must fall on their sword. Now you might think that who ever is driving this runaway trainwreck will put the blame on CC for not knowing the market by dropping a few songs that have been burned into our minds over the years.Ozzie,Freebird.Point to ZZO.Local radio wins. But it is the talent that is lacking.K&B...sorry.When was the last time you were REALLY funny? I may not get their brand of humor. And the "talking cow hide" Tori Thomas. Those so called "comedy bits" are WAY TOO LONG!
The bottom line people is this......time for a mass clean out for this station. It is long over due.
FYI,I'm not a bitter person :'(,I just care way too much. :)

Seems to me every few months or so, something about ZZO comes out that isn't good. some complaint.
I personally happen to like ZZO in its current incarnation when I've heard them.

I'm very happy you enjoy it but can you tell us what makes you listen to them.Is it with certain musical changes brought on by "The Bone" that someone thought they needed a change.CC know that their "ugly step child" of a station in under performing very much.Someone there must be reading this cause Miss Thomas has left the building.I wonder if B&K are looking over their shoulders now.The plot thickens...........

I'm not entirely sure.
I like AOR, but there are certain ones I tend to like.
WZZO is one of them. I liked WRFY much better until around the end of 2007 when they scued much heavier on the classic rock.
WRUF-FM is another AOR I liked.
Perhaps these are the softer side of AOR ?
MMR seems harder to me.

MMR seems harder to me? :D That is what rock is all about.None of this Nickleback & Three Doors Down garbage."if it is too loud, you are too old" is one of my fav lines ever.I guess I won't waste my time asking you if you have listen to 107,The Bone. And as for WRFY,there is no one in that quite little country county wanting to "shake the foundations" there. It would be very nice for someone to give Al Burke a push to see what he can do.The man is not even challanged any more. And yes,Berks county is very laid back type area so I guess any "hard" music selection would not suite the area.

I’m having a tough time figuring out exactly what the complaint is. I hear “talent boring”, “don’t play my old favorites” and “not hard enough.”

Lean ZZO more Active and you’ll gain some audience from The Bone and lose some to The Hawk. Even trade? Throw in more LV classics and the younger guys take a hike along with the media buyers. As for talent, I agree, live and local wins, but I can’t find fault with B+K, they still sound fresh. Shorten the comedy bits and dial back the porn references – these are tweaks that would benefit WZZO, but it is far from a “runaway trainwreck.”

The time is not now, but in the future, could changing 95.1 to Spanish make more sense? It looks like ZZO is permanently the #5 FM in the valley. I don't think it's the stations fault, its bad product, album rock is fading into a niche format.

I enjoy ZZO a lot as well, what exactly are you disliking about ZZO?

Yes..ratings are an issue. Probably revenue is down as well. It's been floundering for quite awhile. Hawk has got them on the older end. Probably should take a page out of MMR's play book for what they should be doing today. That heritage station is doing just fine.

ZZO needs to get more modern, not more classic.

It really seems like it's a whole new world for rock radio. The model is totally new. Gone are the superstars and supergroups. Plus I've seen it a number of times, comments like Nickelback sucks, stuff like that. Can this new model survive? It really seems like a small universe. I would not want to be a rock programmer today.

Let's take our eyes to WBSX Hazleton anytime of day, or 97.9 Baltimore Midday. All new acts.

Seether, Theory of a Deadman, Papa Roach, My Darkest Days - almost every teen boy and young adult knows and loves it. Issue is you cannot survive on just that.

The genre is not dead, it's growing. Check out video views for some of these artists I mentioned.

This rock stuff is dead! It is all garbage. Commercial AAA will save the day! WZZO has been irrelevant for years. Now it is even more so. The whole Macho white guy presentation is old and done with. People just listen to either Public or College radio or youtube. This whole rock thing is a dead horse!

1) YouTube itself lost millions of users, upstart Vimeo is starting to show some head, and old rival Dailymotion is gaining it's ground. People listen more then just YouTube.
2) Provide links to such "videos" that have millions of views that Seether and such other Modern Rock acts have.
3) Rock is dead? Explains why WMMR, WRFF, WMGK are market leaders in Philly, and why WDVE is the market leader in Pittsburgh.
4) Commercial AAA usually scores less then 2.5 in ratings, even though it is being attempted in markets. - sorry.
5) Garbage is an opinion, you know.
6) Many modern rock acts, play on Hot AC, Alternative, CHR and Indie stations nowadays.

Bearman and Keith are terribel too! The whole morning zoo concept is over with. Stations need a friendly person that will play a few tunes and then talk about social events and issues in a civil non right wing manner. A nice rock and roll liberal. No cliched sex jokes or anything like that.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the obvious choice for a future format on 95.1 - a simulcast of sister news/talker 790 WAEB.

In my prev. post, I advocate tweaking, not re-vamping ZZO, but for sake of argument, let’s say you’re CC and ready to get aggressive. What to do?

Wait a month until the Nassau auction is complete, then flip it to a classic rocker and attack WODE head-on with a much broader playlist extending into the 90s. You want just a slightly harder edge than the Hawk.

As for B+K, B stays and K gets KO’d. Put a mama bear in his place. Clean up the smut. The morning zoo template is solid and appeals to the more diverse audience you are shooting for. A new sound needs a new moniker: Z-Rock or some such nonsense, if you decide to keep the same calls. It’s a bonus if you can hire some former Hawk talent.

High risk and a long term commitment, but you catch ‘em by surprise and have a chance to steal a known media-consuming audience rather than snagging a few you tubers.

With no talk competition and AM cumes that occasionally beat WZZO, a News-Talk FM is not warranted in the LV and wastes a good freq.

LMA for Maniac Matt in 5 yrs if he decides not to bid on 99.9 ;)
