Q-100 Atlanta - The Good And The Bad

I don't want to get involved in the debate, but I did want to comment about Kiss 95.1. When I can get them, they really sound good. Very good balance and sound.

Yeah, to shift to focus a bit here, completely agree that Kiss 95.1 is doing a fantastic job - they go "deeper" into rhythmic/pop, and they also go "deeper" into Modern AC, so you get both Wiz Khalifa and My Chemical Romance on the same station

Honestly, though, this is what happens when you don't have a Hot AC in a market - if HAC didn't exist, I'm pretty sure most CHRs in the country would be "balanced" (like they were in the 80s) - but more choices in major markets means stations start the specialize one way or the other in the musical spectrum

And BTW Kiss 95.1 did come pretty close to Modern AC around 2003-2004, to the point where they were playing CD cuts by the Goo Goo Dolls and HAC-exclusive tracks by Vertical Horizon, Josh Kelley, etc. - but when 96.1 flipped to Rhythmic, Kiss adjusted accordingly

As far as G105 in the late 90s, Raleigh has always been a college town with a big local rock scene, yet G105 didn't lean Modern AC/HAC/Alt in the early 90s or in the 2000s for that matter - the late 90s was when Raleigh was experiencing huge influx of wealthy Northern suburban "transplants" in their late 20s and 30s, so leaning Modern AC made sense - but by the 2000s, the influx/relocation of big corporations to the Research Triangle slowed down, and the audience they were targeting was aging out of the 25-34 demo - G105 had to target a younger demo, so by 2002 or so they were back to traditional CHR programming - and same thing happened in Charlotte a couple years later

For Atlanta, no one's ever tried a balanced CHR on a full-market signal. We also know that Cumulus programs their CHRs nationally, and so there hasn't been any recent local market research about what Atlanta CHR listeners actually want.

Very perfectly said. I think this was something I was trying to say about 10 months ago.

I still remember the KZON haters in Phoenix when 101.5 flipped to rhythmic and how people claimed it would "never work". I'll let you research and see whether or not KZON is "not working" in Phoenix today. What's ironic is that before KZON, Phoenix never had a full powered rhythmic that was actually rhythmic and didn't lean urban or somewhere else. I'm beginning to believe that nothing can ever work to people that don't have a desire for it - until the "it will never work" theory is proven wrong. I believe I was pretty much the only hardcore KZON supporter in Phoenix. Now, it seems like I'm the only one who even talks about that station now that everyone else pretty much.... well, vanished and stopped talking ever since they tied with and beat KZZP.

Lets see what happens with WWVA in Atlanta....

In the late 80s to mid 90s (before you lived in Phoenix) there were 2 full-powered Rhythmics in the market: Y-95 and Power 92. The rivalry was very bitter, and notoriously known throughout the industry.

What's funny is that after I posted, I realized what I said and thought back to the Y95 days. I also started thinking about the fact that I bet there would be a reply regarding this. All those thoughts went through my head a few hours ago and then I forgot about it until I logged into my email just now, saw that there was a reply, and sure enough, here it is!

My friend and I still "reminisce" about the days when we used to fight over whether Y95 or Majik 107 were better. He loves r&b and I always liked.... well, you know.
