Q-100 Hits New Low In The Ratings

Q's ratings are really low for a Top 40 station, especially in these times when the format is enjoying huge success nationwide in many of the country's biggest and smallest markets.
This ultra conservative sound implemented by Cumulus head honchos has got to go. Q has got to go back to sounding like an exciting, current based CHR. It sounds fine in the morning, and decent at night, but musically what the station needs to do in between is simple: The music logs you see for the station between the hours of 7 PM to midnight should be implemented for ALL dayparts. The station also needs more prize/cash giveaways to be handed AFTER the morning hours.
obviously there are other ares of the station that need to be retooled and refocused, but I strongly believe part of Q's weakness is that it has not conceded the Adult CHR/Hot AC battle over to Star 94, and has ignored what CHR listeners in the ATL really want to hear on 99.7.

Don't worry about Q100. Word on the street is that they are upgrading the 100.5 frequency which means those in Gwinnett will be able to get the station. In addition, 99X isn't doing well, I predict that when Cumulus buys the Susquehana cluster, 99X gets blown up and Q100 moves to 99.7. I don't know what will happen with Leslie & Steve but I am sure Cumulus will treat them well.
 
Q100 was never what I'd call a great-sounding CHR. But Q had and still has a great morning show.

On 100.5 after the power increase, Q100 was getting a really big cume. That suggested the 100.5 signal was not the problem. Lots of people were sampling Q100 but for short amounts of time.

The lesson here is that moving a mediocre station to a big signal does not necessarily produce big ratings. But yes, the music under Cumulus has become awful. But all the Cumulus CHR's I've heard sound the same musically.
 
Now, lets look at this very carefully. Burt's contract stated that he had to be on a full market signal, thus the move to the former 99x frequency.

What has happened rank wise to his show since the move:

Winter 2008 5th
Spring 2008 6th
Summer 2008 9th

Of course, TRG aren't setting the world on fire with their return either, with a move from 9th place TO A 3 WAY TIE FOR 13TH in the Summer book.

If you were Cumulus with these big contracts and these kind of numbers, what would you do?
 
I think Q sounded great a few years ago. HUGE music variety, and very upbeat, even dance friendly. Tracy St. George was great and i loved Cardio Radio. Also the mix shows were awesome, even when they had "Late Q", the afterhours show, was sick! Q had it's own flavor of CHR. Now it's just "blah", cookie-cutter.

It pains me to say this but Cabbage is right.

Cumulus has Bert, Axel, TRG and Matt Jones under contract. I think Matt's runs out this summer. If he doesn't have a no compte clause, he could be on Radio Atlanta by August of '09. Axel will probably re-up for less money. As for Bert & TRG they are stuck. Of course Cumulus could do some marketing to promote this product.

Let's not just focus solely on Q100, Star 94's 12+ numbers also hit a new bottom in the mid 2s. So I think we also have a CHR in Atlanta trending downward problem. If someone can look at the trend of the key demos for both Q and Star I bet they're struggling. And these missing listeners don't appear to be showing up at B98.5's doorstep either. Only 955 The Beat appears to be thriving.

I think since the whole world appears to revolve around Q100, Q100 must be responsible for this worldwide economic mess. My bet is Susquehanna funded moving the 100.5 stick from Anniston to College Park in the early part of this decade with speculative monies. As the Q100 investment has not panned out to be successful, that "affect" has negatively ricocheted throughout our globally interconnected economy. With all the money the government is flooding into the financial system ... look soon for "Billion Dollar Thursdays" on Q100 to get this economy moving again! And if you don't think my theory is correct, just remember back in the 90s when the economy was doing great, there was no Q100. Coincidence? I think not.

So what you are really saying is q100 affects everything, very interesting.

Star 94 actually tied its low for 12+. In fall 2006, Star's 12+ share was also 2.5%. And Steve & Vikki were still there.
 
Cardio Radio does need to return but WITH Tracey St. George... where's the energy? :p
